who'd a thunk...

". Bananas, tangerines and coffee plants grown at the town of Hvergerdi. "

"Vegetation covers less than one-fifth of Iceland's area and only about 1.1% is cultivated. Trees, mostly birch, grow in some places, along with some willows. The rest of the country is barren mountains, and deserts (lava beds cover some 11% of Iceland) and glaciers (12%). Vatnaj”kull (Lakes' Glacier) in the southeast is the largest Ice field in Europe and Od dahraun (Lava of ill deeds) north of Vatnaj”kull is the largest lava bed on earth. Rivers and waterfalls are plenty, and provide hydroelectric power. Over 90% of homes are heated by hot springs, which also keep greenhouses warm, where the famous Icelandic bananas are grown."

greetings!

I've been to Hvergerdi! A great place! The tropic zone meets the arctic zone. The veggies sure beat the heck out of the whale blubber we were offered in Vik. I also loved the hot water - I went on a 5 day horse treck across Iceland and the hour-long shower (with plenty of hot water) I took at the end of the trip was much appreciated.

May Iceland and its people be always blessed!

If the Mudcat ever has an International Convention, please think about Iceland as its charter location.

Great Idea Blackcatter,
Returned 2wks ago from Iceland and would willingly go again, especially for a convention.
If anyone is planning to visit in the not to distant future, meet up with Skarpi, he's the salt of the earth!

It would need 400 British Mudcatters, 500 German Mudcatters, 1330 US Mudcatters to equal the 2 Icelandic Mudcatters on a percentage base.

Wolfgang dont forget the Canadian people. I think that holding a Convention In Iceland Is a great Idea but Expensive, the airfear is not cheap at the moment. About waking up the other Mutcat member Helgi he Is a vake. Well I am gonna have some " BANANAS " from " Hveragerði " and some Icelandic " SKYR " Nammmmmmmm. Tony had a great time the time he was In Iceland and I hope he will be back with his family. All the best Skarpi Iceland.

Skarpi & all

I was in Iceland in 1988. Spent 4 days in Reykjavik and the general area and them spend 5 days on horseback across much of the island to Stodvar. We took a coach back and spent a great night in Vik.

I though all the people were the friendliest I'd ever encountered and I fell in love with every woman I met.

We had a fun time trying to explain the tv show "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" to one of our guides.

And you're right about the expense of a Mudcat Convention being a bit expensive. Maybe we could all camp at Thingvellir?

On the other hand, it makes sence to meet in Iceland, as it has the great portion of it's population as members! The other possibility is to have a "How many Mudcatters on Tristam de Gama..." With a popultion of, I believe 200, if we get a single member, it would be an astonomical portion of the population.
No kidding, Scarpi, I would LOVE to see Iceland, but me, my wife and band are POOR! So, we will have to wait until there is a huge number of Sorcha Dorcha fans to invite us to play there!
On that note... send me your snail mail address again, to InOBU@aol.com I will send you a copy of the CD Rick Fielding played on his show. It was also played on WBAI in NYC and in ALabama, I forget the call letters. I will keep you supplied with our stuff, so we can build an Icelandic fan base, and maybe the both of you can get us a gig there!
Cheers

Iceland also is a nice "bridge for the majority of Mudcatters; the Europeans and the Americans. Iceland may even be the place where those on both sides of the "Irish issue" around here could meet.

Maybe the cry around here should be "Next year in Reykjavik!"

I'd offer my apartment in Orlando Florida, but it's a bit small. Of course the families would probably like the 7 major theme parks in the area (at last count). For those valued Icelandic Mudcatters, Icelandair does fly here.
