We will be there but are going for the festival and do not want to confuse it with a mudcat gathering although we will be wearing our badges and pleased to see any mudcatters we bump into.

I'll try to give it a whirl but we are in Whitby for the Goth fest. 2 weeks earlier. It was brilliant last year when the two co-incided! Dunno who got the funnier looks - The Goths or the Morris Dancers! Would have loved to get the two mixed (Goth Morris? Industrial Thrash Folk?) but did not know enough peeps!

Dave, there is a goth ladies side....they're called Wolfshead and Vixen.....there is also an S&M side called Prince Albert ( fittingly enough).

WELL WHY WERE THEY NOT @ WHITBY LAST YEAR?????

Hrumph.....

I have heard of other side who would fit the bill as well - The WitchMen while not intentionaly Gothic would certainly look and act the part (Sorry guys if any out there - don't put the dreaded curse on me!!!)

As for S&M, White Rat morris from California have been going donkeys years (are they still???) Never seen them but I believe the bells are fastened directly to the skin - AAaarrrggghhh!

Me and hubby will be there hopefully camping. Are the Witchmen the morris group from Kettering?- if they are they are completely terrifying- all about 7 foot tall and in biker gear

Maggie and I should be there, we can usually be found in and around the Tap and Spile.

DtN - At Folk Week I usually play for Whitby Scratch Morris (featuring Geoff the Duck). The only reason I started was that they let me play electric bass guitar, the instrument missing from most morris sides.

See you all there, Les

Wassail!

Tap and Spile is a Brewery Chain name so there are (unfortunately) many of them

In Whitby, the pub was called The Cutty Sark before it was so misappropriately renamed

For those camping who may not want to be on the official campsite (i.e may be goinga few days earlier) I have today telephoned Stoope Cross campsite nr the Abbey since I was concerned that being adjacent to the Cleveland Way, that it may not be open because of Foot & mouth. the good news is that it is open at the moment although the footpath is out of bounds .

There are quite a lot of mudcatters Heading to Whitby's Moor and Coast festival on the May Day bank holiday weekend. However it is only my bad punctuation probably that has misled you the Yorkshire Gathering is in the Jug on 18th 19th 20th May 2001. This is were the mudcatters will be doing there own thing that is not part of someone else's festival. The Moor and Coast festival is on the 5th 6th 7th May there is a thread I'll send up to the top of the list after I have sent this by repeating this message. Oh I managed to spell moor with an e on the end. If you search for it your Looking for Moore and Coast Dyslexia RULES KO!

Tyke; is there any chance that M&C will be cancelled? Hope not, as it's a town festival, but would be glad of any news on this

10 Apr 01 - 08:18 PM (#437734)
Subject: RE: BS: Moore and Coast Mudcaters
From: Tyke

I would say that there is no Danger of the Moor and Coast Folk Festival being cancelled due to the Foot and Mouth crises. The campsite for the festival is in the grounds of the community college so I see no reason why that should be closed. The rest of the festval is within walking distance and in the Town. I know that the Tap and Spile and The Plough, Baxtergate (Which is the home of the Whitby Folk Club held every Wednesday Night) and the Endevour,Church Street are venues this year. Also a long range weather forecast that I heard was predicting that May and June were going to be nice and hot. (As you probably know this is one virus that fares better in cold weather).

I often go over to Whitby for the weekend; I was shanghaied into Coblers Monday at the Captain Cook Festival two years ago. Last weekend when I there. I was told of two confirmed cases of Foot and Mouth one in Ruswarp and one at the Abbey Farm. From what I can gather, talking to some of the locals, the word is that the animals were from the same stock.

Ramblers and Hikers will find although that many footpaths that run close to or through farmland are closed there is scope for walks along the beach Whitby to Sandsend for an example. But check on the tides for goodness sake I know of, one Volunteer North Yorkshire National Park Warden who had to be rescued. When he was cut off whist walking his dog fortunately he had left word/it was his round at the pub to say were he was going and at what time he was due back. You can check with the Tourist Information Office to find out which walks are to be avoided. Here is the link to get you to the Moor and Coasts web site http://www.moorandcoast.co.uk you can always contact them direct. However if anyone needs a bit of extra exercise the can always join the Scratch Morris Side. I think that Lees from Hull or Mrs Duck will have more information on how to join the side.

I have been told that at least one of the Black Bull Bender's has had to be cancelled they were having two weekend this year so please check with the organisers to confirm this statement. Although I know it to be correct it is not my place to tell people. However the Black Bull Bender is I believe held in Farm Building!

But let's not get paranoid about Foot and Mouth it only affects animals with cloven hoofs. So unless you are the Devil himself and have cloven hoofs you can only spread it from farm to farm by tramping across footpaths that run through farmland or across moor land grazing. So for DUCKS sake keep away from those areas.

We will be there!
Don't worry about being alone - we will introduce you to Glen, Chris, Nigel and all the other Moor and Coast Caterers.
By the way I thought that the misspelling in the thread title referref to the Moor and Coast Mudcaterers - they have had their food tent in some fairly soggy situations, but still battled through wit the chips, baocn and veggie sausages!
