I've been looking all over the net for these lyrics, and I can't find them. I would really appreciate any help any of you could give me.

I've got em upstairs, in Kates notebook, if nobody else gets around to it, I will type them in. We got them off of a 50's/60's website that has been shut down. (HFA strikes again)

Thank you very much (Sorcha). I need it for a performance assignment at school. If it is not posted by tomorrow, I would appreciate if you could help me.

Well, I didn't have to type them all, they are still on the web: Here ya go:

My pappy said, 'Son, you're gonna drive me t' drinkin' ..
. If you don't quit drivin' that - Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!'

Well, you've heard the story of the hot rod race,
When the Ford and the Mercury were settin' the pace.
That story's true I'm here to say,
Cause I was a'drivin' that Model A.

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up;
That Model A body makes it look like a pup.
It's got 12 cylinders and uses them all;
And an overdrive that just won't stall.

It's got a 4-barrel carb and dual exhausts,
4:11 gears that really get lost -
Safety tubes and I'm not scared,
The brakes are good and the tires are fair.

We left San Pedro late one night;
The moon and the stars were shinin' bright.
We were drivin' up Grapevine Hill,
Passin' cars like they were standin' still.

Then, all of a sudden, in the wink of an eye,
a Cadillac sedan passed us by.
The remark was made, "That's the car for me."
But, by then, the taillights wuz all you could see.

Well, the fellers ribbed me for bein' behind,
So I started to make that Lincoln unwind.
Took my foot off the gas and, man alive,
I shoved it down into overdrive.

Well, I wound it up to 110;
Twisted the speedometer cable right off the end.
Had my foot glued right to the floor;
I said, "That's all there is - there ain't no more.

Now the fellas thought I'd lost all sense;
The telephone poles looked like a picket fence.
They said, "Slow down, I see spots."
The lines on the road just looked like dots.

Went around a corner and passed a truck;
I crossed my fingers just for luck -
The fenders clickin' the guard rail post;
The guy beside me was white as a ghost.

Smoke was rollin' outta the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac
I knew I could catch him and hoped I could pass
But when I did I'd be short on gas.

There were flames comin' from out of the side;
You could feel the tension; man, what a ride.
I said, "Look out, boys, I've got a license to fly"
And the Cadillac pulled over and let me by.

All of a sudden a rod started knockin';
Down in the depths she started a rockin'.
I looked in the mirror and a red light was blinkin';
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln.

Well they arrested me and put me in jail.
I called my pop to make my bail.
He said, 'Son, you're gonna drive me t' drinkin',
If you don't quit drivin' that - Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!'

The opening lines of this song refer to an earlier song titled "Hot Rod Race," where a couple of guys racing neck and neck in their hopped up Ford and Mercury are passed by a kid in a model T. Of course the implication there is that it's a stock model T, and it's meant to be implausible and funny, like the Nash outrunning the Cadillac in "Beep Beep." Charlie Ryan created a more realistic explanation, and a far superior song, in "Hot Rod Lincoln."

Here's a fun page that gives you a neat history and a boatload of variants. The history of Hot Rod Lincoln so to speak. I used to know a few others that are there, but HRL is still the best.

Yeah, I know Mike.....But the page autor states, and I agree, that these songs are over 50 years old and viewed in the context of their times, its almost expected. Doesn't make it right of course, you and I wouldn't sing that, but even research on a song like this deservres some accuracy and the same rules apply that we might use for "Blue Tail Fly"...which in its current state makes no sense!!

Cool... Charlie Ryan I grew up next door to Charlie (I was a kid... he was not!) I think Charlie has gosh.... 30 years on me. At any rate... He's almost retired, but still plays pretty regularly.

After having not seen him for the better part of the last 20years... He appeared at out doorstep a few weeks back. With a desire to remaster, mix new tracks into things.. all that stuff. At any rate... that project is complete and its pretty darn cool. All the Hot Rod tunes, Rocket Race.. all that and yea... there is a real Hot Rod lincoln. He still has that darn thing! Tours it sometimes, shows etc. He even had it at Hastings for the Cd release... what a ham bone!

So the only point of this was... Charlie is alive and well and has new CD on the market! Charlie is a good man and it was my pleasure to find him healthy and productive. As I recall.. I think Charlies wife Ruthie had more than a bit to do with the tune!

Well, Mike, it looks like your memory--and reading skills--are better than mine! You got it right.

Spaw, thanks for the link, and Bill, thanks for the anecdotes about Charlie.
