Does anyone know the lyrics for the bluegrass song Love of the Mountain (recorded by Larry Sparks and the Seldom Scene among others) Thanks.

Well, I found this, but no details as to writer(s) or tune:

LOVE OF THE MOUNTAINS

Two trees on the hillside of the mountain,
Always looking' up toward the sky,
Reminds me of my Papa and Mama,
Who lived there eighty years before they died.

CHORUS: Now a bright moon is shining in the valley.
An old wagon leans against a stack of hay.
Two graves on a hillside by a cabin,
My Mom and Dad are resting there today.

The burning of the greenwood on the fireplace,
The fallen snow around the redbud tree,
The branches of the laurel by the creek bed,
And the ripplin' waters of the little stream.

Papa used to talk about the young days
When he and Mama first were settled there.
He spoke about the love of the mountains
That he and Mama shared together there.

Hi Malcolm- Thanks for the lyrics, it'll make singing the song in our group a whole lot easier! It's one of those songs everyone knows the chorus for but nothing else. I wonder who wrote it? Maybe a "traditional".

We got the lyrics from Malcolm, but does anybody have any background information on the song?
Doesn't seem like something we could call "traditional." "Old," perhaps, but it sure seems like a composed song.

Its author is Allen Mills (Fairystone Pub Co BMI). It is on Seldom Scene 'Dream Scene' Sugar Hill SHCD-3858.

In stanza 2, the Seldom Scene sing:

Line 2: redbud tree

Line 4: And the ripplin' waters of the gentle stream

I never heard Love of the Mountain before 1985. So I know it's not traditional. I'm tring to find out when it was first released. Stewie is right about the lyrics, it's a beautiful song.

I can’t find any information about Allen H Mills. I’d like to know if he was really writing about his parents and where it was
