In 1962 Prof. H. Stuart Hughes ran for the U. S. Senate from Massachusetts as an Independent on a peace platform. Photographer Ted Polumbaum wrote a parody of Hoagy Carmichael and Sidney Arodin's "Lazy River" for the Hughes campaign. Ted recently died, and I'll sing at his memorial service March 11 (2001), and would like to sing the song he wrote. Ted's daughter Judy came up with a few of the words that she remembers:

Up the cool Potomac in November time
That cool, cool, cool Potomac River seat will soon be mine
... Blue (grey?) skies up above; there'll be no more love
Unless the people wise up - a man of peace they choose -
Up the cool Potomac with Hughes.
HE'S IN-DEE-PEN-DENT...

Would it have possibly been printed on any of his campaign literature (probably too easy), or in a newspaper covering his campaign (not forgetting college newspapers)? That might be a pain in the neck, I know, but if there's nothing in the family scrapbook...btw, have you tried, say a search on Google on "Stuart Hughes"? You never can tell. Good luck.

I know it's too late for the original purpose of this thread, but I'd be interested in seeing the full text of this song. There is a site out there somewhere, I think, that has a collection of presidential campaign songs. I just can't remember where.
Does anyone know about that site?
