15 Feb 01 - 10:25 PM (#399090) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Bob Bolton G'day Mick, Is that one of the bound (~)A4 Eric Bogle songbooks (of which I have three different ones) ... or a separate book to accompany the 2-CD set? I have seen a few of Wee Eric's songbooks in a secondhand music book shop here in Sydney - Da Capo. You could try here: Da Capo, Sydney. Best of luck. Regards, Bob Bolton |
15 Feb 01 - 11:00 PM (#399110) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: GUEST,Dale (deccles@cillnet.com) I have an Eric Bogle songbook that came with a cassette, I think. Says, "Forty of his best songs, including, "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda." Also says, "Contains the best selling album, "Something of Value."" New condition. 90 or so pages. |
16 Feb 01 - 04:27 AM (#399235) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Wolfgang Big Mick, I've two different E.B. songbooks (some of the titles are the same in the two books) but they didn't come with a CD. I wouldn't mind xeroxing them for you (PM me if you are interested). However, I'm expecting a big E.B. songbook to be issued withing the next couple of years. At least he should do it. Wolfgang |
16 Feb 01 - 09:14 PM (#399838) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Big Mick Thanks Wolfgang, Bob and Dale. Also Rich R. I have struck a deal with Dale and have mailed him and the Mudcat a check. I may take you up on the offer of photocopy depending on what I find in the book. I wanted it, mostly, just for my collection as I have already worked out many of his songs. And while we are on the subject, amazing stuff this man writes, eh? I can't imagine a more powerful song than "Singing His Spirit Home" otherwise known as "Chains". "Now I'm Easy" is another wonderful song. "My Youngest Son Came Home Today", "Leaving of Nancy"..........and of course his more well known stuff. Geraldine Doyle figures him to be a Celtic Wizard. She will get no argument from me. All the best, and thanks again. Mick |
16 Feb 01 - 10:34 PM (#399892) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: late 'n short 2 The highlight of my summer this past year was to see Eric in person. Hearing the stories behind his songs was as moving as the songs themselves. As good as his well known stuff is, the lesser known/less popular songs are,to me, even better...Rosie...Leaving the Land...Scraps of Paper...Standing in the Light...Got to be a Reason...are just a few of my favorites. I sing and play mostly for personal enjoyment and don't have the talent to "work out" the music so any leads on where to find it in print would be greatly appreciated by me as well. Dan |
17 Feb 01 - 07:58 AM (#400067) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Bob Bolton G'day Mick, Glad you sorted out the book you want. If there are other titles you still need, feel free to PM me and I will see what I have on file ... or in the three Australian-printed books I have (no doubt sitting a few meteres away in the chaos of my "filing system"). I run into Eric once or twice most years at festivals in New South Wales ... since he up moved to South Australia about 20 years back. (I guess that if you plan to live on the proceeds of writing and singing folk song ... you don't live in the most expensive city in Australia). The lad writes damn good song for a Scots blow-in! Regards, Bob Bolton |
17 Feb 01 - 10:23 AM (#400129) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Big Mick How's she cuttin', Bob? It will be interesting to compare what I get from Dale with your Oz versions. Might be some stuff there I want to copy. I would love to meet this guy one day. Guess I will just have to come to Oz, eh? I always thought it would be interesting to get the take of a songwriter as to what they thought of someone else's interpretation of one of their "babies". I have always thought that Bogle's version of his own songs were damn near perfect. I know that sounds odd, but if one were to listen to some of the Smithsonian Folkways recordings of Woody Gutherie singing some of his stuff, .......... well, some, and just a few, seem to lack the interpretation. I don't think this odd at all. Oft times the author doesn't realize what it is that will resonate with the great unwashed. That is definitely not the case with Bogle. He has a message, he knows exactly what he wants to communicate, and does it in a very powerful way. I have but one criticism (as if he gives a dried up aul shite what I think...........LOL).........what the hell was he thinking when he wrote "little Gomez" and "Nobody's Moogie". hahahahahahahahahahaha All the best Mick |
17 Feb 01 - 10:40 AM (#400135) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Big Mick Even though it gets played ad nauseum, "No Man's Land" still is very difficult for me to play. Makes me see faces and feel feelings that I have worked hard to put behind me. Usually, if someone makes me sing this in an intimate setting, I end up choking back tears.............or just giving in to them. When one has met death and come to know its ugly ass in an intimate way..........well, this song makes you realize that it could have been you. And it also makes one imagine those that they knew, and what might have been had "man's blind indifference to his fellow man" not been allowed............ Good man ya are, Eric. I guess if I met you, I would have to thank you. Mick |
18 Feb 01 - 07:48 AM (#400726) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Bob Bolton G'day Mick, I like (is that the right word ... am sometimes driven?) to recite a Henry Lawson poem from ~ 1916, Scots of the Riverina (about the forgiveness of a son who leaves home, then enlists ... only given on hearing of his death at Flanders ... and as the last living act of his father - a hard Scottish farmer) then go straight into an unaccompanied No Man's Land. If it is half as searing to the audience as it is to me, it is very effective. Anyway, I will get around to scanning in the contents pages and then i can tell you what I have ... and you can see if you need any of it. BTW: You speak of Eric's interpretation ... I seem to remember a period, way back, when he did not think he could sing his songs and hoped merely to be a successful songwriter. It was the rendition by a local popular/humorous singer of The Aussie Barbecue Song ... complete with "dogs' chorus" (sampled and played back on a synthesiser) ... that moved Eric to doing his own songs(as self-protection)! Regards, Bob Bolton |
20 Feb 01 - 10:13 PM (#402640) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Big Mick The book arrived today, Dale. Thanks very much for your help in this. I have wanted this one for a while. I don't know why I waited so long to post about it, and I appreciate your parting with it. I haven't gone through it in detail yet, but I will. All the best, Mick |
23 Feb 01 - 05:20 AM (#404399) Subject: RE: WANTED: Eric Bogle Songbook From: Bob Bolton G'day Mick, I forgot to get back with this songlist from the three Eric Bogle songbooks that I have. I had scanned in the three contents lists ... formatted each as a table and added references to the individual books ... combined all the tables in to one ... re-sorted to pick up the duplications ... stripped the table and HTMLed it for posting ... then forgot to send it! (What was it they said abou the 3 best things about Alzheimer's ...) Anyway, the three books indicated are: LM80: The Eric Bogle Songbook, Larrikin Music, Sydney, 1980. MS84: The Eric Bogle Songbook, Music Sales, Sydney, London & New York, 1984 (?). MS88: Something of Value , Music Sales, Sydney, London & New York, 1988. If any of these songs are of interest (and not in your new book), I can scan them in (1 bit GIF, at 300 dpi) and send them to a private e-mail advised to my PM. This gives a pretty good print on any standard laser or bubblejet - and the individual files are only around 60 kb, so they don't overload the system. I should see the wee lad about the Australian festival scene as we head into the more comfortable weather of Autumn. If he complains of this ... well, he should get out a better supply of his song books! Regards, Bob Bolton
