Subject: Who wrote & sang this song?
From: shades

I would deeply appreciate if you could tell me who is the singer or songwriter of this song. I heard it on the radio 20 years ago, and I'm still searching for the name of the singer!! I don't know the title; But here is the first verse and chorus:

Well I'm headin down to San Antone Waiting for an eight o'clock train My woman left me late last night Things ain't been quite the same Gotta get back to Dallas In time for New Year's Eve I'm gonna work my way and make a hundred dollars Aw, and hit the road again

I don't want you to think you're the first one To leave me out here all alone Cause this ain't gonna be the first time This poor cowboy's spent the night alone

Honey I've been a fool But a bigger fool I don't know when I've been Just to open up my arms Aw, and let you walk right in

I can't remember any more of the lyrics. If you know PLEASE post the name of the singer/songwriter and I'll rush out and buy this song!!

Reminds me of "That won't be the First Time This Cowboy's Been Left Alone" by, I believe, the Marshall Tucker Band. The tune I recall had a catchy, upbeat, possibly fiddle, riff running through it.

Of course, that's just my recollection. I could be wrong.

Sorry, blew a bracket at high speed. I meant:

You can find a downloadable Zip file of the "Won't be the First time This ol' Cowboy slept alone..." tune at this spot (http://www.geocities.com/~ruben_three/aolecby.zip) but I don't recognize the format -- it opens into something RealPlayer, nor Quicktime will recognize with a ".vpa" suffix on the resultant file. But iffen you kin play it you can hear it and see if this is what you're looking for.

Regards,

A

Marshall Tucker band it is, by the looks of it. Found the following lyrics at this place

THIS OL' COWBOY

Well, I'm a-sittin' down in San Antone, waitin' on an eight-o'clock train.
My woman left me here last night; things ain't been quite the same.
I gotta get back to Dallas, and tie up a few loose ends.
I'm gonna work a week, make a hundred dollars, ah, and hit the road again.

CHORUS: So I don't want you to think that you're the first one to leave me out here on my own,
'Cause this ain't gonna be the first time this ol' cowboy's spent the night alone.

Well, honey, I been a fool, but a bigger fool I can't remember when I been,
Just to open up my heart, and let you walk right in,
But there's one thing in life that ain't hard for me to do:
That's as soon as I kiss the lips of another woman, I'm gonna forget all about you.

CHORUS

Lord, If you wrote all the women's names down I know, and let me pick one out,
I don't b'lieve there'd be one in the whole bunch, aw, I'd give a hoot about.

CHORUS

whooshh....that's us blowing on our fastest fingers on the Web...**Big Grin**, glad to be of service, Shade. I didn't know it, at first, but usually with a couple of hints from others we can find the lyrics or whatever. Have fun learning the song and come back to visit.

As someone who as asked more questions at this site than he has answered (or attempted to answer), I was glad to get it right and get it early on in the thread. Is there a flute on that tune? What album was it on?

Tom D., if you follow the link i put in, where I found the lyrics, it says it is on their Greatest Hits Album of 1978. Before that, I haven't found.

Thanks,

kat

I understand it was the Marshall Tucker Band but which one of the guys sang it? I was just wondering. It doesn't sound like Toy or Jerry. Gotta be one of the other four or a guest. Charlie Daniels was a guest on that song. Maybe somebody else was there. Maybe not. Does anybody know?

I have just now listened on Spotify to several versions done by the Marshall Tucker Band.

I am not familiar with the band members, so I can't identify them.

First there is the "single" version, which appears on "12 Great Hits" and "Greatest Hits." The lyrics correspond to those posted above.

Then there are at least 2, maybe 3, "live" versions that appear on the albums "Stompin' Room Only," "Carolina Dreams Tour '77," and "Live on Long Island, 4-18-80." These have a different vocalist than the "single" version. These might vary slightly in the wording and in the number of times the chorus is repeated, the length of the instrumental breaks, and so on.

Then there is a version where Charlie Daniels is the vocalist. This is on "Live! From Spartanburg, South Carolina."
