Help: Okay to purrrt a link to Mudcat on site

Subject: Okay to purrrt a link to Mudcat on site?
From: granny

I know that I don't really have to ASK -- in fact, I didn't, at first...had a link and then moved it....anyway, does it meet with any disapproval from Mudcat to include a link to it on one of my web-sites?

You know, as I do stuff around the web, I find people who say they always ask about everything first...check on every little name-mention, etc. And, I've found those who say that's an infringement on their freedom of speech, and they can link whatever they want.

One site I went to had this big scary declaration about what not to do, etc.

So, I sort of ask if I feel like it's a good idea, and otherwise, I don't!

I think the Mudcat link would be a nice addition to my homepage, but, if it's a don't-do for some reason....could somebody tell me?

Thanks.

I don't think there is any problem with it, from what I know, Granny. I have links to it on some of my pages, photos, writings, etc.

Maybe Max, Bert, or Joe will come in here and say so for sure.

Nice of you to ask, though,

kat

I like the idea of purring on the Mudcat...

Me, again... I'll probably put the link (again) on my homepage when I'm next working on it.

If something's not derrogatory and there's no financial catch involved...you have a right to put whatever links you want on a site, as far as I understand.

Sometimes, there's the "award" things that come up, and it's supposed to be an honor or a priviledge to be mentioned or receive recognition -- especially among the needlecraft people. I think it's nice to acknowledge other crafters, etc., and I don't like to be 'the one who's not asking permission' -- but a web-site is a web-site, not a judgment (or, shouldn't be).

Yes, purrrring.

I think Max welcomes links from personal pages like yours. That is what it's here for.

He was talking about linking on the show this week. He was complaining that he was getting tons of hits from a commercial site. He felt they were stealing the Mudcat content by putting a heavy load on his servers & being unwilling to make any kind of contribution to its support.

All this commercial stuff makes it more difficult, of course. But I've always thought linking was THE basic idea of the WWW? I've put quite a few links to individual Mudcat threads on 'my' (actually Henry's, and totally non-commercial) website because that seemed the quickest way to make info collected here accessible to interested people.
I do hope that with the dive of share prices of everything to do with the Internet the crass commercialism will recede a bit and the Net left for the purpose it was originally designed for - sharing information on a mutual basis.

There was one other time when somebody was conscientious enough to ask whether they could link to Mudcat. Max said it was fine, and I'm sure it's fine for Granny to put a link. Granny, if Max should happen to object, we'll let you know - but I can't imagine he's object.

Yeeeaahhyyy!! I got good answers.

So, I'll put the link back where I had it for a day or two (before I decided to be conscientious).

Thanks, all.
