Help: Thanum an Dhul!

With enough practice alone in my car, or my shower, and enough whiskey, I may yet get brave enough to sing Finnegan's Wake in public. However, Tim's expletive at the end of the song is a mystery to me. The lyrics in the DT say "Thanum an Dhul! Do you think I'm dead?" What the heck does "thanum an dhul" mean?

There's possibly a variety of meanings depending on what is said. I have heard it as " In ainm an Dia" - "in God's Name" or as "D'anam don diabhal" - "Damn you." Spoken quickly they could sound alike.

It's "d'anam don diabhal", but they have done it phoenetically, much the same way "Eirin Go Bragh" has been done, the original being of course, Eirinn ga brach. Irish Gaelic doesn't translate well with the English alphabet, and the royalists that occupied Eirinn for so many years made it more difficult as it was illegal to speak any but English. There is no real written Irish Gaelic,or at least none known, in any alphabet save the modified English (which in turn is naught but a Latin system to begin with, though the spoken English be closer to Germanic tongues).

Interesting. I've only heard it as "Thunderin' Jaysus".
