I was listening to live music in the Boston area in the early '60s. I don't remember who sang that song but Jackie Washington is a possibility. Here's as much as I remember:

A year has gone by, red roses
A year has gone by, pretty flow'rs
A year has gone by in sorrow
No headstone, no headstone

...

When everyone's forgot, red roses
When everyone's forgot, pretty flow'rs
When everyone's forgot I will remember
No headstone, no headstone

Allmusic.com lists a song called NO HEADSTONE ON MY GRAVE or DON'T PUT NO HEADSTONE ON MY GRAVE. Charlie Rich is credited as the composer. It was recorded by Charlie Rich, Esther Phillips, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

I don't have lyrics right now but maybe later....

Lyrics copied from a blog and compared with several samples:

NO HEADSTONE ON MY GRAVE
Charlie Rich

1. Don't put no headstone on my grave
'Cause all my life I've been a slave.
I don't want the world to know*
Here lies the man** that loved you so.

2. Don't send no flowers when I'm gone.
Just put me down and then move on.
Just put me down and let me be,
Free from all this misery.

3. And tell my mother not to cry
'Cause I'll see her in the by and by.
Tell her that I'm finally free
From all the trouble you've caused me.***

REPEAT 1, 3, 1.

[*Jerry Lee Lewis sang "I want the whole wide world to know"
**Esther Phillips sang "fool"
***Jerry Lee Lewis sang:

3. Mama, mama, don't you cry.
I'm gonna meet you by and by.
Tell papa I'm coming home.
Lord, it can't be very long.]
