19 Feb 01 - 11:31 AM (#401462) Subject: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: Bugsy My son's fiance is auditioning with a new band this weekend and they have asked her to sing the following songs. I would have thought that they would have supplied her with arrangements and/or the sheet music, but they haven't. If anyone can give me some help It would be much appreciated. Here goes:
Calypso - by - Spiderbait. And before you ask, 'Spaw, "No I'm Not Pulling Your Pisser". these are real songs and groups. Thanks in advance. Bugsy |

19 Feb 01 - 01:57 PM (#401586) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: Matt_R Not hardly, Sins! I'm not that big on 80's New Wave. I've heard of The Buggles "Video killed The Radio Star"...it was the 1st video ever played on MTV. Never actually heard the song before. Of course, the ones by No Doubt are abviously covers, since No Doubt is a relatively new band. They rock, with their punk/ska/rock sound...with cute little Gwen Stefani. They have kick ass songs like "Just A Girl", "Spiderwebs", "Oi! To The World", "Sunday Morning", and the beautiful obiquitous "Don't Speak." |
19 Feb 01 - 05:40 PM (#401741) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: Helen Killing Heidi, Spiderbait & the Teenage Dirtbag song are all current, new millenium stuff. I'm pretty sure that the two bands KH & S, are Oz bands. No covers here. I have to confess that I don't really think that the name of the band which does Teenage Dirt Band is called No Doubt. I think it is Weezer. Helen |

20 Feb 01 - 02:06 AM (#402008) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: alison yep they are Oz bands Helen, I'll do you "video killed the radio star" in paltalk sometime....... but it'll be the Buggles version from the 80's..... hahaha and Teenage Dirtbag isn't by No doubt...... but I don't know who it is by.... slainte alison |
20 Feb 01 - 02:35 AM (#402015) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: Joe Offer No, Spaw, please DON'T post lyrics to pop songs. Dick once said post everything, but I got a clarification from Susan of DT. She says we should post links to pop songs, but we should post the lyrics of anything a folk musician might like to sing. Well, maybe "Teenage Dirtbag" qualifies... -Joe Offer- |
20 Feb 01 - 09:08 AM (#402110) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: GUEST,Matt_R Weezer? Hmmm. I'm not sure about Weezer singing that one. But they sure did rock on their song "Buddy Holly". |
20 Feb 01 - 06:41 PM (#402491) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: Helen Oh well, I knew it started with the sound of "wee". It's Wheatus and not Weezer. Helen |

21 Apr 01 - 12:22 PM (#446111) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: M.Ted Bugsy, She's had to work up vocals for seven songs overnite? That's an awfully difficult thing to do--it makes it very hard to show what you really can do when there is so little opportunity to prepare--and it reflects a lack of understanding on the part of the band when they give the person who is going to be the centerpiece of their show so little room-(and who ever heard of a seven song audition? It shows that these people are clueless--) She should work up one or two songs that she likes and have the band play them---and find one or two songs that the group does before hand and give it her best shot-- Believe me, if she does one or two songs really well, she will get the job--real musicians will know right away-- These bonzos would die if someone handed them seven recordings and asked them to have the guitar parts worked out and polished for an audition the next day-- |
22 Apr 01 - 10:38 PM (#447027) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: Bugsy M Ted, I couldn't agree more. However this seems to be the way that young cover bands seem to work now. She has been to several auditions that work in exactly the same way. Matt said she didn't feel very hopeful when she got back last night. It's a shame because she really has a decent voice. I'll keep you all informed as to her progress anyway. THanks all! Bugsy |
23 Apr 01 - 11:09 AM (#447303) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: M.Ted She should start her own band--first, she should find someone who plays guitar or keyboard to work with(for a number of reasons, she should at least consider the possibility that this should be a woman) work up a set of the songs that she likes and does well, clean and polish, and then play in a few open mike situations, this way, musicians who like what she is doing will make themselves known, and she can get some exposure and work on her stage act-- If this sounds like work to her, tell her that she is going to have to do it anyway when she gets into a band--and this way, she'll have a lot more control-- Also, the truth about those bands is that they usually play a few paying gigs (the ones that the had lined up when they realized they needed a singer) then don't get any more, and end up slowly falling apart. She probably won't pay any attention to this advice--my daughter, who is a good drummer(she even reads), and could work every night if she would just listen to what I have to say, never has--and her drum kit is just gathering dust while she works as a DJ--

23 Apr 01 - 11:15 AM (#447312) Subject: RE: Can you help with these non-folky lyrics From: GUEST,Matt_R Actually, "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a Guns 'n Roses song, covered by Sheryl Crow for the Adam Sandler movie "Big Daddy". As for the Cranberries, they're a band I love!
It's the same old routine |
