Lyr Req: Cold Missouri Waters (James Keelaghan)

Hello all

I recently heard a song about a Canadian firefighter who died while trying to fight a wildfire in the start of the century. Do anyone know this song?

I believe the first lines go something like

My name is .... I'm a fireman

Any information (as well as lyrics and/or chords) will be appreciated.

Sounds like James Keelaghan's song "COLD MISSOURI WATERS" on his A RECENT FUTURE CD by Green Linnet (GLCD 2120); that song is about the Mann Gulch fire of 1949, as described in Norman MacLean's book YOUNG MAN AND FIRE.

My name is Dodge, but then you know that;
It's written on the chart there at the foot end of the bed
They think I'm blind, I can't read it.
I've read it every word,
And every word it says is death;
So, Confession
Is that the reason that you came?
Get it off my chest before I check out of the game;
Since you mention it, well, there's thirteen things I'll name,
Thirteen crosses high above the cold Missouri waters.

I hope this is enough to get you started.

Check out this song recorded by Cry Cry Cry (folk combo of Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky & Richard Shindell) on the CD of the same title - its a compliation of the 3 of them doing older folk songs. It's a brilliant version! The CD also includes a recording of REM's 'Fall on Me'. Pretty great altogether!
