Oscar Brand released an album (I Like Cats) that was all songs about cats. Cheryl Wheeler included a song about her cats (Meow) on her album Sylvia Hotel.

Then there are the traditional ones like The Body In The Bag and The Cat Came Back.

I like Sam The Skull. Is there a tune out there for it?

Eric Bogle (I assume Somebody's Moggy = Nobody's Moggy) claims that the song had its genesis in the long drives across Oz to gigs and the large number of run-over feral felines converted to dried flatcats. Indeed he claims to hold the world cat frisbee record.

Tomcat Trouble
by Tim Henderson

Tomcat trouble on an old porch swing;
He's dreamin' of the night when the cat is king,
Lookin' down on the feeder where the songbirds sing
With his bad eye...
And dreamin' of a kitty from catnip city
With a deep, dark, silky purr:
A biter and a spitter, she's the mama of a litter
That looks more like him than her!
And dreamin' of a...

Chorus:
Black cat night,
There's gonna be a bad cat fight
We're hoping things will turn out right
For a chewed-up kitty from run-dog city,
Uh huh...

Tomcat trouble on a moonlit night
He's layin' in the alleyway, just waitin' for a fight
Watchin' everything that comes in sight
With his bad eye...
Eyes glowin' pretty to a "Here, kitty, kitty!"
And a million other midnight sounds
Claws kinda itchin' and a tail kinda twitchin'
And a chewed ear hangin' on down!
He's dreamin' of...

Chorus

Tomcat trouble, hey, what do I see?
He's droppin' on a brown dog from out of a tree
Claws churnin' and a coal fire burnin'
In his bad eye...
There a thrashin' and a smashin' and a trash can crashin'
And lights where no lights were!
A spittin' and a yowlin' and a hound dog howlin'
While that tomcat's pluckin' fur!
And dreamin' of a...

Chorus

Tomcat trouble; hell, that's what he's for:
Chasing all the songbirds away from your door,
Taking all you give and demanding more
With his bad eye...
Moonlight serenading and a-alley renegading
At the risk of his nine lives,
Moanin' and a-spittin' and a-makin' baby kittens
With the help of a hundred wives!
And dreamin' of a...

Chorus

Subject: Lyr Add: THE CAT THAT ROAMED
From: Gervase

A belated addition (I sing this to my cat as a dire warning. Particularly when his farts get too bad):

THE CAT THAT ROAMED
(Malcolm Austin)

In the West End of Hayes lives a working man
He says I can't fly but me moggie can
And when my cat gets free
He comes flying back to me
Lifted up by next-door's toe

There's a pigeon loft in next-door's yard
With locks and bars - oh, entry was hard
But Charlie had a dream;
Oh how he would scheme
Just to get amongst them for his tea.

It was 1950 - that's ten to eight,
When the neighbour made his big mistake;
Left the door open wide
Charlie got inside.
Sometimes it seems your dreams come true.

In the West End of Hayes life was hard
And so were those pigeons in next door's yard.
Have you seen what beaks can do?
It was far more peck than chew.
Poor old Charlie how his fur did fly.

The neighbour stormed out in a rage
To see Charlie fall out of that cage.
He said, 'Cat you're going to fly;
I'll lift you up so high
You'll think you're never coming down!'

I was off with me mates for a pint or two
When I saw a bit of orange flash up in the blue.
It's Charlie the cat that roamed
Flying back to his West End home.
Come outside he's crashed upon the path.

Get on up you flat moggie
And I'll fetch the vet to thee.
Charlie I told you so,
I warned you not to go;
Now you'll need a lift just to reach me knee.

In the West End of Hayes lives a working man.
He says I can't fly but me moggie can,
And when my cat gets free
He comes flying back to me,
Lifted up by next-door's toe.

From: Áine

I just can't believe that you 'old time' 'Catters haven't told English Jon about this song and the wonderful, classic BS: Cat Farts thread:

CAT FARTS
(Tune: How Much Is That Doggie In The Window)

Chorus:
How much is that kitten in the window,
The one with the odorous bum.
The aroma is one that we should know,
Reminds me of green river scum.

His eyes are the colour of emeralds,
His toothies they shine in the sun,
I would love to hug him and kiss him,
If his butt didn't smell like bad rum.

(Chorus)

He mews as I scratch his ears and hold him,
He nuzzles my cheek with a purr,
He raises his tail in greatest pleasure,
Too bad that his end has no fur!

(Chorus)

The man says there'll be no charge for him, dear
He's free to the first true good home,
But beware of his little SBD's, dear,
He could part the Red Sea with no comb!

(Chorus)

I'm still bitter that my contribution to Garrison Keiller's collection was rejected, and that I can no longer find the lyrics. It was entitled "There are No Hairballs in Heaven" to the tune of "The Lightning Express." It's gone, solid gone...There's that great British children's book called "The Ship's Cat", all in verse about this piratical feline.

A cat song that did NOT get on the Garrison Keiler cat song CD is "Cat-town Races," which was on A Prairie Home Companion in the very early '80s. Anyone have the words?

I learned the "All Around My Hat" parody from Judy Cook:

"I'm going to kill my cat
And smother him with my pillow.
He pissed upon my hat
And for that he has to pay.
But I'm not in to cruelty
So when I'm through dissecting it
I'm going to send the pieces to the ASPCA."

I last sang it after a spate of "Don't Pet the Dog," "Please Send My Dog Home, Uncle Sam," and a host of others of that ilk.

*Teabag being the name of the cat that bites my toes most mornings. Don't ask why; there's no sensible reason. Just never name a cat when pissed. Could have been worse, though. He was very nearly Kitten Tikka.

I took my revenge on my person when she took me to be "neutered", as the humans say: I made sure one of my 'bollocks' did not "drop", so she had to pay a higher fee to have the job done (heh heh heh).

But I must say that, as a feline of delicate aspect ( to use the disgusting term that humans do, I was the "runt" of my litter), it pleases me not to deign to engage in clawticuffs with those hulking, brutish toms who are so unrefined as to "mark" their meager territory while I have an entire human abode at my disposal! Therefore I've come to terms with my person on the subject of the unfortunate "neutering" incident, and she is of course my devoted servant for life.

Now, if you'll pardon me, I must once again go through the motions of refusing her latest offering. Ah, the rigorous duties of lordship....

Mein Gott, Artie on the Windowsill -- are you related to my sorely missed Peppersass? His mother was supposedly too immature to ever have kittens, and he was the runt (excuse the term) of the litter and never expected to mature sexually. One morning when he was almost 2, he awakened Curmudgeon by spraying in his face. Thought 'Mudge was going to perform the operation with his teeth! But no, we hied us to the vet and discovered the one up one down syndrome which cost us a pretty penny.

My Dear Sir EJC:

"Posh"? Tut, tut, dear boy; I prefer to think of myself as possessing a certain dignified style. Oh, I enjoy a good romp with a bit of string or catnip as much as the next feline, but I'll quickly recover my composure and strike some elegant pose or other. I am ever mindful of our ancestry wherein we were worshipped by the more enlightened humans of a bygone era.

Alas, too few humans today recognize our superiority to them. This is the reason that I am so distressed by the petty squabbling and ear-ripping that goes on between the toms; their behavior is below their station, and does nothing to gain us the respect that is our due from the awkward, furless humans.

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M GONNA DROWN MY CAT
From: Charley Noble

BG, here's the version that I got from my Nova Scotian buddy, Vince Morash. I wonder who actually wrote it?

ANON From Nova Scotian singer-songwriter Vince Morash – 11/11/95 Tune English Traditional: "All Around My Hat"

I'M GONNA DROWN MY CAT
 C G C F/C G G7
I'm gonna drown me cat, or-r smother it with a pillow,
C G G7 C F C D G
It's pissed all a-round me flat, and it's gonna have to pay;
G7 C F G
But I'm not in-to cruelty, so when I'm done dis-secting it,
C G C F G G7C
I'm gonna send the pieces to the S–PCA.
So fare ye well, wee puss, ye've piddled once too often,
I'm off to buy a dog, who's good and well behaved;
Ye never discriminated, the place where ye urinated,
So "Rest in Pee" shall be the epitaph on yer grave.

To get ye potty trained, I've struggled till me strength,
Just like yer bladder drained – over walls, rugs and chairs;
Yer metabolism's booming, ye produce more than ye're consuming,
It's really quite beyond belief – so-o, pussy, say yer prayers.

I'm gonna buy a bat, made of the finest willow,
I'll put ye out with that, end me troubles with one blow;
But I pity poor St. Peter, for when he comes to greet ye,
Ye'll wait till he's not looking, then ye'll piss through his halo!

See you in Kennebunk on Saturday afternoon.

Here's another suggestion from my person, one that is much more to my liking. It is named "Open That Can" and is written by Canadian singer-songwriter Nancy White. It's on "Momnipotent: Songs for Weary Parents", which apparently is a thing called a CD, and is available ...in the Amazon? ...no, no, AT Amazon.com ...oh, these humans and their silly names...

At any rate, it's a lovely song. Even if it has (ugh) dogs in it, and other animals as well, each verse ends with "Meow, meow, open that can, cat says open that can." I approve.

While we're waiting for "William Shakespeare's In My Cat", does anyone have any use for a small but dead sparrow that my calico cat left as an offering on the kitchen floor?

Sorry, Charley, I can't find my #%$& CD yet. It's in my apartment somewhere (it's "safe") and I WILL unearth it. God knows when, though.

This is why my friends have begun to decline to lend me stuff.

Your calico has paid you a great compliment! Be sure to praise her profusely before secretly disposing of the offering... or maybe you could have it stuffed. Was the head still on?

Hmmm... I see that MMario's link to the lyrics of "The Dundee Cat" has broken, perhaps a casualty of the recent upgrade. Here's the link, again: http://www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=6200

Or, if this link breaks in the future, just do a "Lyrics & Knowledge Search" (make sure the DT box is checked) for "Dundee Cat". There are several mentions of the song in the Forum threads, too.

No one here mentioned "Railroad Bill and the Kitten". Now there's a song where things work out better for the cat than for the human, in the end!   :^)   Link: http://www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=4862

From: Charley Noble

Well, since I mentioned this unrequited contribution (above) to Garrison Keillor back in 1982 I finally found my verse and chorus, and here are some addition verses contributed from Mudcat members:

Initial verse and chorus by Charlie Ipcar © 1982
Traditional Tune: "Lightning Express"

NO HAIRBALLS IN HEAVEN

Chorus:

There'll be no hairballs in Heaven,
No weariness sorrow or pain,
No claws that are bleeding and broken,
No nights left out in the rain.

We'll be in that beautiful jungle,
With birdies to chase through the leaves,
And mice will be there in abundance,
We'll snatch them whenever we please;
There'll be no Pit Bulls in Heaven,
No German Shepherds nor Chows,
And all will be tuna and salmon,
And cream drawn fresh from the cow.(CHO)

We'll sleep on the softest of pillows,
With Catnip to colour our dreams,
And no one will dare to awake us,
Until we have hatched all our schemes
There'll be no thrown boots in Heaven,
When up on the rooftops we sing
And the door we go out, when it opens
Will always lead out into Spring. (MMario)

The toys will always be fun ones
That scurry and scamper and hide,
With fur we can sink all our claws in,
And good things to eat inside.
When we sharpen our claws on the sofa,
Nobody cares if we shred and tear,
And when WE want to get some attention
A broad lap will always be there. (Lin in KS)

The elm trees grow tall up in Heaven
Just right for a hunter to lie
Stretched out on a branch with his eyes shut
In that home between green grass and sky
With the smells of the earth in his nostrils
And the feel of the bark 'neath his feet,
And the screams and the shrieks of the songbirds
In his ears, making music so sweet. (Lin in KS)

The ladies all will be willing,
The toms will all be debonair,
The kittens will stay safe with Mother
Until they no longer need care.
There'll be no needles in Heaven,
No dogs, no fear, no cars--
ust plenty of catnaps and grooming
And singalongs under the stars.(Lin in KS)

We'll never get bumped off the pillows
Where cat hair galore we can shed
Big Mama will never roll over
Disturbing our nest by her head (Mag)

She'll let us go out at All Hallow's
(She's nervous because we're all black)
We'll cruise with the kids scamming candy
And collect little mice in our sack (Mag)

She'll put back the cat door she took out
Disgusted with what we brought home
Our friends will drop through to visit
Even if we're out on a roam.(Mag)

Though no cat can make it to Heaven
Till all of her nine lives are done,
When you've used your sixth or seventh,
Your Cat Heaven dreams have begun.
There we chase butterflies through the cloud fields,
And claw the celestial walls,
For cats always seek out the highest perch,
And Heaven's the loftiest of all! (Genie)

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

A friend, Ron Baily, wrote one about trying to do his cat in. I used to sing it but can't now remember all the words. The chorus went

St. Peter you're about to meet an old friend of mine.
Just as soon, just as soon as I can find,
My shotgun, my bowling ball, and ol' my baseball bat
And that good for nuthin' god damned cat.

Just discovered this one: MY LITTLE KITTEN SUSIE, sung by Lonnie Johnson on her album "Losing Game," originally released 1960. This is true blues; it doesn't seem the slightest bit ironic or cute. There is a sound sample at Barnes & Noble

... ev'rything go wrong.
Yes, she's my doctor when I'm sick. She's my comfort when ev'rything go wrong.
She's my little kitten Susie. She has my true lovin' till I'm dead an' gone.

She knows when I'm worried....

BILL THE CAT

John Williamson

We had a cat
His name was Bill
He caught our budgie on the window sill
One holy day, one sunday morn
Left only feathers on our back lawn
Oh no Bill, you can't do that
You silly pussy, you stupid cat
So we took him down, our family pet
And we left his balls with the family vet

meeoooww meeeoooww

Well the very next day he packed his bags
Left all his penthouse and playboy mags
How could we do it to the family vet
Go and leave his balls with the family vet
Well we get no postcards, no telephone calls
He's out in the bush somewhere, with no balls
And he's obsessed with sweet revenge
So he eats our parrots and our fairy wrens

(Chorus)
Yes he's mortified and we all regret
That we Left his balls with the family vet
X2

How he's highly sought by the feral choir
For his new found talent to sing much higher
Has no more time for female friends
Only parrots and fairy wrens
No sense of humour, ex-family pet
He's still angry, he's still upset
It still hurts, he can't forget
That we left his balls with the family vet

Chorus X2

Well, as Bob Kanefsky tells it, he was in a group talking about Eric Bogel when someone said something like, "Can you believe that the same guy wrote 'Nobody's Moggy' and 'No Man's Land'?" To which someone replied, "Can you believe they're on the same album?" So naturally, Bob dediced that they should be the same song:

No Moggy's Land

Cindy Mangsen has an album called Cat Tales, which includes a song called "Rudy's Big Adventure" about the cat who caught his head in the garbage disposal.

Nobody mentioned "The Cat Came Back"? And did the last few contributors notice that this is a four-year old thread? Not that it isn't worthy of revival, of course.

F.A.P.(FELINE AMERICAN PRINCESS)
Lyrics By: Mercedes Lackey/ Leslie Fish (bluestar894)
Music By: Mercedes Lackey/Leslie Fish (Tim P. Ryan)

Aren't I kind to allow you to live in my house?
Aren't I gracious to grant you the use of my chair?
Aren't I wonderful when I give you a dead mouse?
Aren't I utterly, totally, beyond compare?
And don't you admire the virtues you see
in marvelous, lovely, magnificent me-ow,
me-e-e-ow-wow-wow, me-ow, me-e-e-ow?

I will carefully shed just selected dark hairs
when I'm lying on all the white laundry you did;
And the white hairs will go, when I bother to lair
on black velvet, were they can't be brushed off or hid.
They looks so much better that way, you'll agree!
They'll remind you of lovely, magnificent me-ow,
me-e-e-ow-wow-wow, me-ow, me-e-e-ow.

If you try to insist that I live on dry food,
I will either look thin, and pathetic and sad,
Or I just might do something disgusting and rude,
such as eat it, and throw up all over your bed.
Only chicken and liver and fish, naturally,
are fit for the palate of marvelous me-ow
me-e-e-ow-wow-wow, me-ow, me-e-e-ow.

I really don't understand why you should look
at anything else or have things in your hands,
so I'll patiently lie on your papers or book
to suggest that you treat me as my rank demands.
You really should pet me when your hands are free.
It's a privilege to fondle magnificent me-ow
me-e-e-ow-wow-wow, me-ow, me-e-e-ow.

Or, just when you're maddest at something I've done,
I'll go do something else that's so touching or sweet,
that's so charming, adorable, silly or fun
it'll just knock the stockings right off of your feet.
You know you can't win, so why fight it, you see?
You know you're a sucker for marvelous me-ow
me-e-e-ow-wow-wow, me-ow, me-e-e-ow.
I know you're a sucker for marvelous me!

Glad I could find it, Saul. (It's not that easy doing a forum search for "cat," since it will bring up everything that has that 3-letter sequence in it, e.g., "Mudcat," "Mudcatter," "catfish," "caterwauling," "cat house," etc.

There's a Revolutionary War (American) song called "Poor Kitty Popcorn" that I think may be in the DT or forum but I haven't found it. It's a real tear-jerker.
