BS: Gobsmacked, Volume 1

21 Feb 01 - 12:10 AM (#402699)
Subject: BS: Gobsmacked, Volume 1
From: Little Hawk

Okay, for all those who are either sick of the Bushwhacked series...or can't plow through all the verbosity...and want a kinder, gentler political thread...

This thread is to concern only political disputes on...

1. The Isle of Mann 2. The Orkney Islands 3. Scapa Flow

Furthermore, each posting is to be BRIEF, cheerful, and deeply respectful of opposing viewpoints.

Go to it!

Isle of Mann? Is that really fair? How about Isle of Womenn, or at least Isle of Personn? Well I've had my say.

Well, personally, I think the IoM police acted quite correctly in ejecting those troublemakers. Fighting with those Scousers was just not on. Some people just don't know how to have the craic without going overboard.
'Ninety' indeed - a bit of sean nos singing would have been more in their line. So there! Eddie

Now there we have 2 cogent, well-reasoned, and thoroughly valuable comments on the currents politics of the Isle of Mann, shortly to be renamed the Isle of Hu-Mann, so as not exclude anyone.

I begin to have high hopes for this thread. What about the Orkneys and Scapa Flow?

Sorry. Typo. I should have said "current", not "currents". For that matter, I should probably have said "current political situation". Much better.

Scapa Flow? Wasn't that a song by Enya?

Was it? I didn't know. You mean "Orinoco Flow" don't you? Scapa Flow is (or was) a big British naval base in northeastern Scotland during the 2 world wars.

Always quick on the uptake there, Little Hawk. Some of my best jokes take hours to understand.

Damn. Andy Stewart inspired me to actually think about a linear pub crawl (albeit an extended one) from "Orkney down to Dover", but that "Bloody Orkney" bit didn't do much to bolster my ruminations. Hmm, maybe I;ll just do Bloom's Day somewhere.

That was Orkney from a squaddie's-eye point of view during the war. I believe it's a bit livelier these days, with some great music.

I protest. This thread is insular and doesn't take into consideration those of us who are too ignorant to know anything about the Isle of Mann, the Orkney Islands, or Scapa Flow. I think this thread should be dumbed down so people like me can participate in it.

Respectfully,

Carol

well, I for one want to know what happened to those cat's tails! Manx cats are just plain weird, and I suspect illegal genetic experiments on animals! Sitting out there on their island, subjecting POOR little critters to lifetimes of not being able to clear a mantle of fine glassware with a few sweeps of a tail! For shame!

By golly, just reams of valuable information here, and even a couple of raging controversies. Perhaps we should add Shepherdstown, West Virginia, so as not to be insular, though...is that how it's spelled, Carol?

Yes, Little Hawk, you have spelled it correctly, and I am somewhat pacified. However, I think you are going to have to send a delegation of Orillians to Shepherdstown after I get home so we can complete this peace process. Please contact my people about making arrangements.

Carol - I wasn't aware there was a war on between Orillia and Sheperdstown.

This could be serious, eh?

How about we trade you people some Canadian beer in return for...umm...well...what've ya got? Could you send us some warmer weather?

Flies are high in protein and essential Hawk nutrients. A Little Hawk would only eat a few hundred thousand though.

Try this look at history. It's not brief, it's not cheerful, and I'm not sure it's deeply respectful of opposing viewpoints, but much of it is set in the Orkneys. It's also a favorite of mine. Don't say I didn't warn you.

22 Feb 01 - 09:22 PM (#404216)
Subject: RE: BS: Gobsmacked, Volume 1
From: Little Hawk

Spaw - we would only trade for the state bird if the state bird was the tit. The greater tit, that is. We will not settle for the blue tit or the lesser tit.

It appears that West Virginia, sadly, does not qualify.

- LH

p.s. This post is no aspersion toward CarolC...we are simply trying to locate the right state here...so's we can negotiate and end this here conflict.

That's the spirit, Lonesome!

Carol - No war, eh? Okay, I guess we'll keep our beer then. We'll have a big peace celebration, and all party down at the lakeshore and maybe go ice fishing afterward. We can have blindfolded snowmobile races across the lake, and award the winners (or should I say "survivors") with a free McGill for their back yard. Sounds pretty "decent, eh" as BDiBR would say...

I don't know, Little Hawk. I think maybe you and the rest of the Orillia delegation should load up a (clean) McGill with whatever that wonderful beer was that I had on Monday evening in Toronto, and bring it down to Shepherdstown after I go home. We can watch the crocuses bloom and do some innertubing down the Potomac River in our hermetically sealed bio-hazard suits. Then we can go harass some Morris Dancers and you and the rest of the Orillia delegation can present me with the McGill because I deserve it anyway.

Try the Chicago Manx Society ... really ... some "expat" Americans probably outnumber the population already. Passed them by during Chicago's Celtic Festival in September.
My own experience was of Camp Jurby and a summer camp with the British Cadet Corps rambling over hill and dale.

There was a deputy vice council general to the UN, named McBribe, who made a good argument that the occupation of the northern counties of Ireland were tied to NATO interests in guarding the Scapa Flow, see LH, can't get away from the major controversies on MC...
