Lyr Req: Down by the Liffey side

This song used to be sung by Christie Moore (so I'm told) and begins "I am a poor old Dublin man". Does anyone know it?

Try this from the DigiTrad:

There's two songs to the same tune, Down by the Liffey side (a rebel song from the 20s) and Down by the Tanyard side (a love song) the former obviously based on the latter. The lyrics and numerous recordings are available all over the place. Don't know tho if this is the song CHRISTY (not Christie) sang. All the best.

The one in DigiTrad is not the one I'm looking for I'm afraid. Sorry about the typo - I was too busy remembering the E on Moore to get the Y on Christy!

There are worse errors. Imagine that there is a German translation of a book from the troubles in Northern Ireland in which 'the folksinger Christy Moore' was tranlated as 'die Folksaengerin (= female folk singer) Christy Moore'.

Now to the question. It's a difficult one and I don't know whether I can help. But there is an Irish rebel song with the line 'down by the Liffey side' in it (at least in some versions) and it is different from the song above. It is called 'Tipperary far away' or 'Sean Treacy' and you can find it here. However, it has not the first line, Sooz has posted. Have a look, but I'm not confident to have found the song.

Thanks but still not the right one! The song I'm looking for is more in the sentimental/romantic vein.

Another day and the problem still unresolved. Sooz, are you certain about your lyric fragment and the link with CM. Was it a live or recorded performance? I just think that it is very unlikely the there are two songs called Down By the Liffey Side, as one is so famous, written if memory serves by Peadar Kearney of Soldiers's Song fame. On the other hand it could be a parody.

Sooz: have you looked at  Down By the Tanyard Side?  It's only one example of a family of related songs that take place down by one side or another, and may perhaps give you, or us, a clue.

Is this the one? 'Twas down by Anna Liffey, my love nad I did stray Where in the good old slushy mud the sea gulls sport and play We got the whiff of ray and chips And Mary softly sighed Oh John come on for a wan and wan Down by the Liffey side

If this is it I'll pass on the other three verses.

No need; that's the one already in the DT that Sara provided a link to in the second message in this thread.

Another day older and no nearer the solution indeed. The beginning of the song was sung to me over the phone by a friend who told me that Christy sang it to him in a bar after a gig in Doncaster 20 years ago! Who knows if his memory is accurate? It is beginning to look otherwise.

Sooz,
I usually tell people not to start new threads but to post follow-ups to the same thread, but here there might be a reason to break the rule. If you get Martin Ryan interested or singers from Dublin (Frank Harte has been a rare visitor to this site) they might be able to help. But when they see the thread title they think it is about the well known song and perhaps don't open the thread.

You may have more luck in a new try (with a link to this thread so the 'work' up to now is not lost) with a title that has the first line in it. It might draw knowledgeable people.

Good luck

Wolfgang

Not necessarily, though it does look as if he never recorded the song.  Does your friend remember any more of the words?  It would help.

Wolfgang and I cross-posted; my comment relates to Sooz's post, not his.

Could it be "Down by Black Waters Side" ? Just a thought.

Well 11 years on and it seems no one has resolved it. Well I can put you all our of your collective miseries. Here's the song in question:

Christy sang it last Monday week (16 July 2012) in the Button Factory. If anyone wants to hear it let me know...

Thanks for the information, Justin - so it seems the song was composed by Sylvester Gaffney - and, as Jim Dixon pointed out on the thread you linked to, this was the pseudonym used by Leo Maguire.

I'm curious now as to whether there is any connection to the family of the Irish baritone, Austin Gaffney - I believe that as a boy soprano Austin was due to appear on a Radio Eireann show broadcast by Leo Maguire but his voice broke overnight!

Hi Matthew,
I wonder could you give me more information on the claim that Sylvester Gaffney was actually Leo Maguire. I have discussed this with Fergie, you put up the Sylvester Gaffney songs, and he is convinced there was a Sylvester Gaffney, and he located his grave in Glasnevin for the Sunday Walk during the Frank Harte festival, where one of his songs was sung.
I know Wikipedia claims he was Leo Maguire, so that is probably an indication he wasn't!
I could not find the jim Dixon link.

Hi All,

As Zozimus said; we visited Sylvester Gaffney's grave in Glasnevin cemetery last September as part of the Sunday Walking and Singing Tour for the Frank Harte Festival 2011. He is buried in the St. Patrick's section of Glasnevin Cemetery in grave number XL 136 and the grave marker clearly states Sylvester Gaffney.
I have now idea where the claim that Sylvester Gaffney was a pseudonym for Leo Maguire began and I attach no credance to it. Where is the source for it? Where is the evidence?

Fergus

Hi Fergie and zozimus,

The National Library of Ireland lists Leo Maguire as the author of some of the songs in the booklet posted by Fergie, so I'd start by asking there what the basis for that listing is. I certainly don't claim to know any more than that so I'd be very interested to hear what you find.

All the best, and hoping to join you at this year's Frank Harte Weekend for my first time there.

Matthew

Origins I cant help with , but there IS a another verse that The Dubs recorded back then - Extra verse is certainly early twenties !

And we'll have little children and rear them neat and clean
To shout "Up The Republic!" and to sing about Sinn Fein
They'll do what their Auld fellows did , to Englands power defy
Send them out with guns aganst the Free State Huns Down by the Liffeyside
