The lyrics and numerous recordings are available all over the place. Don't know tho if this is the song CHRISTY (not Christie) sang. All the best. |

Imagine that there is a German translation of a book from the troubles in Northern Ireland in which 'the folksinger Christy Moore' was tranlated as 'die Folksaengerin (= female folk singer) Christy Moore'. Now to the question. It's a difficult one and I don't know whether I can help. But there is an Irish rebel song with the line 'down by the Liffey side' in it (at least in some versions) and it is different from the song above. It is called 'Tipperary far away' or 'Sean Treacy' and you can find it here. However, it has not the first line, Sooz has posted. Have a look, but I'm not confident to have found the song. Wolfgang |

Sooz, are you certain about your lyric fragment and the link with CM. Was it a live or recorded performance? I just think that it is very unlikely the there are two songs called Down By the Liffey Side, as one is so famous, written if memory serves by Peadar Kearney of Soldiers's Song fame. On the other hand it could be a parody. |

The beginning of the song was sung to me over the phone by a friend who told me that Christy sang it to him in a bar after a gig in Doncaster 20 years ago! Who knows if his memory is accurate? If you get Martin Ryan interested or singers from Dublin (Frank Harte has been a rare visitor to this site) they might be able to help. But when they see the thread title they think it is about the well known song and perhaps don't open the thread. You may have more luck in a new try (with a link to this thread so the 'work' up to now is not lost) with a title that has the first line in it. It might draw knowledgeable people. I'm curious now as to whether there is any connection to the family of the Irish baritone, Austin Gaffney - I believe that as a boy soprano Austin was due to appear on a Radio Eireann show broadcast by Leo Maguire but his voice broke overnight! I have discussed this with Fergie, you put up the Sylvester Gaffney songs, and he is convinced there was a Sylvester Gaffney, and he located his grave in Glasnevin for the Sunday Walk during the Frank Harte festival, where one of his songs was sung. I know Wikipedia claims he was Leo Maguire, so that is probably an indication he wasn't! I could not find the jim Dixon link. |

He is buried in the St. Patrick's section of Glasnevin Cemetery in grave number XL 136 and the grave marker clearly states Sylvester Gaffney. I have now idea where the claim that Sylvester Gaffney was a pseudonym for Leo Maguire began and I attach no credance to it. Where is the source for it? Where is the evidence? Fergus |
