Ancoats - Area of Manchester, UK, towards the North of the City Centre. Fringing the area now known as the 'Northern Quarter' which is being re-developed but is still a bit run down at the mo. The Jolly Angler - home of a good Monday singaround club - is just of Great Ancoats Street which is the main drag through Ancoats.

As far as I know Lowry never painted anywhere in Ancoats, having gained most of his inspiration working as a rent collector in Salford and Swinton (West of the City) and then having retired to Mottram, miles east of the City.

He got his formal training in Salford as well at what was the Art college, now part of Salford University. Most of his work was housed in Peel Park Hall/Museum (next door to the old Art college) but is now being moved to an awful modern building on Salford Quays (The Lowry Centre). Poor old chap will be turning in his grave!

I guess Brian and Michael used 'artistic licence' in the words 'Streets of Ancoats where I used to play..'. More correctly could be 'Streets of Kersal/Broughton/Swinton' and etc. (any other area that Lowry knew well).

Not vital I know but I hope this gives some relevant information for your introduction to the song.

Enjoy

Cheers
