04 Jul 00 - 10:39 PM (#251932) Subject: Womenfolk From: GUEST,MAmie Was reading through the "Lesser Known Folk Groups" thread hoping to find something on the only "lessers" I knew of, Womenfolk. Wonderful to see that at least two people have heard of them. I have their "Live at the Hungry i" which I have listened to since someone mistakenly put it in my parent's car (intending to put it in their own, oops!) after a party in the 60's. It was my introduction to folk music and a good one at that. My question is can anyone tell me where I can get any more of their recordings? Thanks in advance for your help |
04 Jul 00 - 11:10 PM (#251941) Subject: RE: Womenfolk From: raredance So far as I know, none of their albums have been reissued on CD. Therefore you will have to haunt used record stores, online record dealers (using a search engine to look for "vinyl records" should get you a bunch, or spend some time following the online auctions that have LPs. I think they issued about 5 albums. rich r |

I'm new to the forum and don't know how to respond "outside of the forum".How would I get in touch without posting e-address here? Also don't know any of the search engines. Thanks again. MAmie |
05 Jul 00 - 09:02 PM (#252551) Subject: RE: Womenfolk From: SINSULL Two of their albums are up for auction on Ebay at about $7.50 each. One is the Hungry I Album. The other is simply "Womenfolk". Have fun. SS Click here for ebay Womenfolk listings |
06 Jul 00 - 12:11 AM (#252667) Subject: RE: Womenfolk From: raredance Sorry, sometimes I get carried away with trying to keep messages short and forget that not everyone is familiar with all the tricks. The Mudcat has a provision to send personal messages, which is sort of like sending an email without having to publicly post the email in the forum. The catch is that I think you have to be a registered member to use it (if I am wrong about that someone will corrct me). But registering you membership is a good idea, so you should do it. No one will show up at your door uninvited and you will not receive any religious pamphlets in the mail. There is a "membership" click-on at the top of the page. Once you are registered, you can go to "personal page" and look for "send a message". From there you can access a list of all the goofy names that the registered members go by such as "rich r" or "rangeroger" etc. Then send that person a message. It will show up on their Mudcat the next time they log in. As for general search engines on the web there are lots and everybody seems to have their favorite. Some of the more widely used ones include: yahoo.com, altavista.com, google.com, excite.com, northernlight.com and many others. Try the same search on a couple different ones and note that you will get different results. I hope that helps a little. Curse those ebayers who have time to lurk around ending auctions while I am at work. A couple days ago I got beat out by one of those last minute scoundrels for the one Womenfolk album I am still lacking. rich r

I'm not so sure about that TV guide with the Beverley Hillbillies, I never thought Granny was that much of a singer. Careful around them tuners, they have a reputation for being fast swimming fishes that could knock you over. I'd hate to see you flounder

23 Feb 01 - 07:44 PM (#404955) Subject: seeking: 'Womenfolk' recordings From: MAG (inactive) For sentimental reasons I would like to find either the LPs or rereleases (if such exist) of this folk-scare era 5-woman group. If you would let go of yours, make me an offer, with an appropriate cut to Mudcat, of course. Also note the Peter LaFarge LP I put into the auction. Yours, MA |
23 Feb 01 - 08:35 PM (#404990) Subject: RE: seeking: 'Womenfolk' recordings From: SINSULL MAG, Their LPs are always available on ebay and ususally for reasonable prices. Check out the "Shop and Auction" above. They may be there as well. |

25 Feb 01 - 11:05 AM (#405938) Subject: RE: seeking: 'Womenfolk' recordings From: MAG (inactive) thanks, everybody; I've tried Amazon, and the only listing was $90. Buying on Mudcat has the advantage of supporting Mudcat, but I'll try eBay. I've never been there. I'll find 'em. As a kid, my big sister had 3. How many total are there? |
25 Feb 01 - 01:28 PM (#406040) Subject: RE: seeking: 'Womenfolk' recordings From: Jimmy C Mag, I have only one LP of their's. Just titled" The Womenfolk" the liner notes are by Alex Hassilev of the "Limeliters". Songs on this LP are
Kitle Rag Doll Para Bailar la Mabma One Man's Hands Whistling Gypsy Rover Skip To MU Lou Love Come A Tricklin' Down Little Boxes Old Maid's Lament Rickety Tickety Tin Good Old Mountain Dew I don't mind letting it go if the sentimental reason is good enough, like if you are one of theiur daughters/sone etc. - please send me a PM and we'll discuss it. 25 Feb 01 - 04:31 PM (#406109) Subject: RE: seeking: 'Womenfolk' recordings From: raredance To help you with your hunt there are 5 of them (or 4 1/2 if you want to get technical. "Man O Man" is probably the least common of them followed by "We Give A Hoot". If you are going auction shopping I would expect them to be in the $5-15 range. Expect to pay more for ones that are still sealed or are in near mint condition. Stereo ones are more expensive than mono for the same condition. Since you plan to listen to them, go for vg+ or better condition. If you can't wait for the uncertainty of auctions, searching the web for "used records" or "vinyl records" will turn up many many dealers with prices ranging from modest to very expensive, so shop around.

12 May 07 - 03:46 PM (#2050120) Subject: RE: seeking: 'Womenfolk' recordings From: GUEST,The last Thing on my mind The single was from their last RCA album called Man oh Man, a collection of songs that were more pop oriented. Although there are some nice songs, it was not their best effort. They broke up not long after this album was made and a failed Canadian show ended. I wish FolkEra would release their music as they have with another RCA act, Limeliters tom |

I myself grew up and spent countless hours listening to the women folk, but for me i was lucky enough to have Joyce James sing to me personally as I am pround to say that i am her nephew. I just happen to be lookng for info on her and the group and stumbled upon this site and you can imange how heart warming it is to know that many people still listen to them. We are fortunate enough to have in our family all the albums ever made by them and whenever we have a family get together we still play them. |

I still have all three. i was middle aged when I bought them (36) I'm now 84 and get all nostalgic when I listen to them. I might sell them for $1000 each.;-) |
