Many well-known (if not entirely traditional) Latin American songs have multiple versions. We Anglos wouldn't know anything about that, now would we? Quite often if the next word begins with a vowel the two are phonetically combined, for example "y una" (and a) becomes "yuna" to the ear. The fact that it appears thus in your source may mean that a space was inadvertently left out -- a typo -- or the transcriber was a non-Spanish-speaking person. |

With your help I've located several pages on that song. I have not found the data of writing, but 1860 seems to be a good guess according to several pages. It seems to be (according to several pages) the most often played and most often recorded song in history (over 5000 different recordings are on record). Bizet seems to have brought this tune into classical music. There are rumours, probably not true, that to hear this song (in German) was the last wish of emperor Maximilian of Mexico before being executed. Wolfgang |

There was already a German version of that song in 1867 and it might have been one of the favourite songs of the emperor and his wife Charlotte. Chalotte lived until 1926 (she became insane when she was unable to summon European help for Maximilian to prevent his death) and the song might have been her favourite song (it is in German a song of death and parting). I think more than that is speculation. There is another story about this song: That is was forbidden to be played on all ships of the Austrian Navy for a considerable time (Maximilian was Austrian Navy officer).
