Subject: A letter from home.......
From: toadette

My dad used to sing us a song about a COWBOY.....out on the range.....who got a letter from home...and the cowboy's name was JACK.....part of the lyrics were:

"It's only a message from home sweet home...from loved ones back on the farm....from father and mother, from sister and brother....praying to guide me from harm..."

I've been searching for about 4 years to find the name of this song and the complete lyrics....if anyone could help me, I would be very, very grateful !!!! Thanks!!

The title is "Only a Message from Home Sweet Home", written by Edmund Florant, recorded by Brownie Ford, available here. Still looking for actual lyrics.

qA LETTER FROM HOME

VERSE 1:
All around a western water tank, I met with a reckless crew
And one cowboy said to another, 'Jack, there's a letter here for you.'
'It may be from his sweetheart, boys!' cried a gruff voice from out in the crowd;
With a laugh and a jeer, they all gathered near, while Jack read his letter aloud.

(chorus)
This is only a letter from home sweet home, from loved ones down on the farm;
From wife and mother and sister and brother, praying to keep you from harm.
And baby's lisping a prayer tonight, to guard you wherever you roam--
We would welcome you, Jack, if you'd only come back, that's our message from home sweet home.

VERSE 2
'Then fare you well, my friends,' he said; 'I'm headed for that land.'
And one by one all the cowboys came and clutched him by his hand.
One said, 'If we'd had homes like yours, we'd all be better men;'
'Jack, before you go, old pal, won't you read us your letter again?'

CHORUS

I learned this song a little over 20 years ago from the Stoneman Family. Pop Stoneman recorded it 50 or so years ago.

Thanks Guest Bill from Alabama,I learned this song back in the 1930s and the author was Harry Mac Donough and he made the first recording in 1902 on an old Edison Cylinder.I'd forgotten most of the words and I've been trying to find them for the past 60 years. You made my day.Louie Roy from Oregon Thanks

Louie Roy--

Glad to be of service. We worked several shows with the Stoneman Family not long after Pop died, and picked up the words from them. In their version, the tune is taken straight from "Home Sweet Home." I'm much obliged for your addition of background information; I'll add that to our introduction of the piece in concert.

Bill

Yes, Bill. In the original thread is always best. Thanks for the kudo, but it wasn't my idea, it was Burke's and it is a good one!

Hope this is what you are looking for. My husband sings it.
Out on a western ranch one night
I met with a restless crew.
One cowboy said to another one, Jack
There's a letter here for you.
    I suppose it's from a sweetheart bow
Came a rough voice out in the crowd.
With a laugh and a jest they gathered around
    While Jack replied aloud.

It's only a letter from home sweet home
From loved ones down on the farm.
From wife, from mother, from sister and brother,
Saying dear boy please come home.
The baby is whispering a prayer tonight
To keep you where ever you roam.
We'll welcome you Jack, it you'll only come back.
Twas a letter from home sweet home.

Well fair thee well my boys, said Jack,
    I'm going to that land.
Then one by one each cowboy came
And took him by the hand.
One said if we had homes like yours
    We'd all be better men.
So Jack ole pal, before we part
Please read us that letter again.

From a novel: The Selector: A Romance of an Immigrant by James Green (Sydney: N.S.W. Bookstall Co., 1907), page 142:

As he swung the instrument [a concertina] from side to side, it sobbed and sighed its soul out, then laughed and danced, and the men knew that it was in the hands of a master.

"Now, boys, you must learn the chorus," said the preacher, as he began the song.

Out on a western ranch, one night, there met a reckless crew
When one said to another, "Jack, this letter came for you."
"I suppose it's from a sweetheart, boys," said one among the crowd.
With laugh and jest they gathered round, and Jack replied aloud:

        Chorus—
It's only a message from Home, Sweet Home,
From loved ones down on the farm.
Fond wife and mother, sister and brother,
Praying to guard me from harm.
And baby is lisping a prayer to-night,
To bless me where'er I roam.
"We'll welcome you, Jack, if you'll only come back,"
Was the message from Home, Sweet Home.

And now the men took up the chorus, and as the preacher repeated it a great burst of song swept out from lusty throats.

It's only a message from Home, Sweet Home,
From loved ones down on the farm.

Then they waited for the next verse.

"I'm going, boys; good-night," said Jack. "I know you'll understand."
Then one by one his comrades came and shook him by the hand.
    Said one, "If we had homes like that, we'd all be better men;
And now, before you go, just read that letter once again."
