28 Feb 01 - 10:20 PM (#408494) Subject: Lyr Add: FOGGY BANKS From: Sorcha I think I found the lyrics: FOGGY BANKS (trad. arr. Lothlórien) On the foggy, foggy banks, me boys, we pitch and toss about, And we blow our frozen fingers as we hear the skipper shout. Heave away upon the capstan. Give a hand to heave the trawl. Oh, when I was but a lad at school, I wouldn't stay at home. Like lots of other foolish lads, I thought I'd sooner roam. Heave away upon the capstan. Give a hand to heave the trawl. So I went and I joined a trawler and it's then I quickly found That it wasn't all plain sailing when you reach the trawling ground. Heave away upon the capstan. Give a hand to heave the trawl. You'll be hauling night and day, me boys. you're nearer slaves than men, And once you get all your fishes aboard, it's time to haul again. Heave away upon the capstan. Give a hand to heave the trawl. And when the waves are pouring around us and they're pounding against the deck, Well, you'll work your bit like all of the rest if you want to save your neck. Heave away upon the capstan. Give a hand to heave the trawl. And the captain's name is Johnson and he works us 'til we fall, And if he sees us a-shirkin', well, it's God preserve us all. Heave away upon the capstan. Give a hand to heave the trawl. No chords, tho. |
01 Mar 01 - 06:15 AM (#408666) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Foggy Banks From: Malcolm Douglas By way of a footnote: most of the references I've seen to the song refer to Lothlorien's recording (they certainly have put in the work on publicity) but it seems that Jez Lowe also recorded it back in 1983; he gives his source as a book, New Zealand folk songs, by Neil Colqhuoun, several editions of which appeared between 1965 and 1973 or so. Copies can be found through Bookfinder.com. Lothlorien live in NZ., so the book may very well have been their source, too. |

It was Lothloriens version of this song I just heard, so it fits me very well! Thanks Sorcha. I´m about to follow your link and look at the book no Malcolm. Regards QRS |

30 Jun 06 - 04:05 AM (#1772500) Subject: Foggy Foggy Banks From: MAG I am reviving this thread as I have an interest in the song, which comes up at our local SSSSSS (Second Saturday Sea Shanty Singing Sessions). I will try to track down that book, Malcolm, it it is still available. Lots of songbooks include authored works even if they are folk songbooks. I thought Capstan shanty songs were for raising the anchor. Who knows if a capstan was also used to raise a fish haul? I am not familiar with any of the artists mentioned; could owners of the recordings describe and compare? TIA, MAG |

05 Jul 06 - 12:38 PM (#1776781) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Foggy Banks From: MAG I got a Jez Lowe CD while I was in Portland (Oregon) over the weekend. I like his stuff a lot. I still don't know how his version of "Foggy Banks" goes; it was not available. I checked out Lothlorien on the web; their version not available either. They LOOK fairly psychedelic, as one might expect from a name taken from Lord of the Rings. Does anyone know who else has recorded "Foggy Banks?" |
