Oops -From Max

Hi guys,

I goofed. I was messing with the system and accidentally reset all your last visits to now but in the wrong format. To fix this, either reset your last visit or go to your profile and submit it.

Sorry

Well, Max, whatever you did helped a lot. Over the last week or so, Mudcat had slowed down to the point that it was almost too frustrating to use. Now it seems to be working at a good speed. Thanks for all your hard work. We kinda think you're a pretty darn good guy.

I am trying like hell to figure out what is going on with speed. We have done tons of tests and have found nothing. I have changed several things in the last day or so, so it may be somewhat better. Also, I have now an anonymous ftp server in a different location to try to offload some of the heavy usage from this site. Also I am in the process of offloading all the images on the site to speed up the forum and the searches. These things should help too.

I think what is going on is just popularity. I watch the web hits come in and we have 3 to 5 simultaneos hits all the time... 24/7. So we are very busy and bandwidth seems to be the issue. Offloading the images and downloads should help.

Please keep letting me know how the speed and such is, there is really no way for me to tell except you telling me because I am working on the machine that contains all this stuff so it is always fast as hell for me.

Thanks

Max...it may be a combination of things..(always the hardest to figure out)....I saw the speed increase dramatically for a few days when you made some changes a few weeks ago,,,then it dropped--suddenly--to that agonizing pace...now it is back to just pretty darn slow..unless someone publicized this site in some 'MAJOR' way and got us thousands of new browsers, I don't see how it could change that fast....and, since I do not see any increase in posts in the forum..(a slight decrease, I think, due to being unable to read & respond with any speed..), I suspect that there is something in the site/phonelines/software/. Since there are 6 or 7 regular posters in this area that I see in person regularly, I have compared notes, and it has been slow for everyone.
....I confess, I am really only comparing this to other sites that I visit and trying to note whether the net as a whole seems slow, or just certain sites.

If it is just bandwidth, I would be interested in knowing what it would take to overcome this problem...is it just that $10,000 (or whatever)next plateau machine/phone connection? Since we deal 95% just with text, and don't have to contend with 1000's of locusts downloading porno pics, it seems like we shouldn't have to struggle so hard....*smile*...Keep looking...we are behind you....and thanks for the info & updates....it helps to know what is happening..

Max...do you have any sort of 'timeout' in the software? I just tried to load the "Worksongs & Labor Movement" thread...(34 messages) and had it labor for a couple of minutes and tell me 'document done' with 11 messages not loaded!

BillD- One thing that the forum members forget is that there are a LOT of people accessing the DT database who don't even know that the forum exists.

At this sitting, it's definitely a little faster than generally was abt a month or two ago - been busy an' havn't been on much; also did have some trouble getting in, and also have boosted my edo ram to 48 meg, from 16, though not sure how much that affects this function..

Cheers, BK

Dick....that's why I put the caveat in my post about 1000's of new browsers....this serious slowdown was fairly sudden...one week it was all zipping...the next it was molasses! hard to explain totally by just gradual increase in database usage....

I've also noticed the "timeout" problem Bill D mentioned, when I'll try to load a thread and only get the first few messages, and at the bottom of the screen it will say "transfer interrupted!" I've had to change my browsing time from lunch time to early morning, when I assume there's less traffic. Still, even at a slow speed, this site is priceless. Thanks for all your work Max.

Dear Folks,

A humble suggestion to those desperate to see just the most recent postings to the longer threads: Change the setting at the top of the thread page to "Sort Ascending." Reversing the thread seems to take a lot less time than waiting for the whole thing to load.

Question to Max: Could we have the choice of setting the default to "Sort Ascending," at least until things speed up? Thanks

Shula
