Help: Catter Abb'ns ?

02 Mar 01 - 05:57 AM (#409367)
Subject: Catter Abb'ns ?
From: gnu

I can usually quickly figure out some of the abb'ns you Catters use, but some escape me. I have come up with some over the years that also require explanation, on occasion. In written correspondance, I frequently use AYEC rather than the impolite ASAP or the extremely impolite RFN, which oft is replied to w/ WIGAR. Sooooo, if you care to take the time….. *BG*, LOL, ASL, BS, *bseg*, etc ????

Noreen - thanks. Hope everyone now ignores this thread and uses the dictionary. Learned my lesson : search first and ask questions later.

I had to look up bseg. gnu Has mentioned ASL which I can't find listed in Noreen's link. I can't remember seeing it used here, at least not in the context I am thinking of, but it is frequently used in chat rooms, often as A/S/L, to ask someone their Age, Sex and Location.

Jon Freeman - I started writing down the ones I didn't get right away and ASL appeared in one of the threads I have read over the past few days, but I can't remember where or in what context. If I do, I'll post it.

Noreen - Nice post ? Nice play ? No point ? gnu is stupid ?

I have found a post by mrzzy which uses ASL. In that context, it means American Sign Language.

NP is No Problem.

I see that gnu used some things that are completely outside my experience.

AYEC, for example. What's that?

Gnu refers to "the impolite ASAP". Wha? ASAP, to my experience over the last 70 years, means As Soon As Possible. What's impolite about that?

RFN???

WIGAR???

Inquiring minds want to know.

Are these links already in the FAQ? I don't recall them being there last time I looked, but it would be a good idea, eh?

Dave, I would guess AYEC is At Your Earliest Convenience. Perhaps given that it is "extremely impolite", RFN is Right Fucking Now. I've not managed to guess at WIGAR.

I have never considered ASAP to be impolite.

WIGAR - Whan I Give A Rat's Ass? I know, probably not, but gnu did say in response to RFN, so...:-)

I always thought ASL was American Sign Language, too.

WIGAR - When I'm good and ready. Which is polite. I have found that the best ( not the only ) method of defending oneself against ruder's is to be polite and calm. Verbally, nothing disarms like talking softly. Case in point, Pierre Elliot Trudeau always talked softly and politely, unless someone crossed the line. Then he used whatever the situation called for. I am reminded of the time a heckler would not let him speak. After much patience, PET motioned him to the dais and WHISPERED something directly to him and the heckling ceased. When asked later, PET said he asked the heckler to allow him to speak in a manner that the heckler would understand. Politely and privately being told to fuck off can be quite disarming, although PET publically preferred the term Fuddle Duddle. Of course, this incident may have had more impact on the heckler because not long before that incident, PET laid a sweet, short thrashing on a photographer that crossed the line. By the way, PET, as in "pet", is not normally used when referring to one of Canada's greatest statesmen because this is the french term for breaking wind.

For those of you still reading this extended diatribe, although ASAP is polite, I consider it less polite than AYEC. It's kind of like those little red tags I like to rip off of office "hot files" that denote extreme urgency, rather than a personal word, with an explanation, to the same effect. I have always belived that the first person to be let go in a downsizing should be the person who uses the most red tags because they are usually the ones who create the need for red tags through incompetance. Remember, PPPPPP.

ASAP and AYEC are different situations though!

ASAP would usually mean a higher priority;while AYEC implies discretion in prioritizing.

If I get something marked AYEC - it will slotted into the schedule - if I get something marked ASAP - other things get bumped!

But what about RFN in the priorities MMario? Assuming I am right in what it stands for, I think I would have put it in file #13.

In file #13, right on top of the little red flags.

AYEC = ASAP - Manners

RFN (from my supervisor) would mean drop EVERYTHING and get it done. Not a question of manners, question of priorities.

Agreed. However, I would assume that a situation as severe as to require the use of RFN would warrant immediate and direct verbal communication so that the super would be able to breathe normally AHEC or, perhaps, RFQL. Right __ quick like !

Forgive my silliness. This morning it was lack of sleep and hot tea. Now, as it is Friday eve and my boss, the worst slave driver I have ever worked for ( a wild beast if you ask me ) has not any more RFN's to foist upon me until 05:00 Dark Hundred Hours tomorrow, I shall repair to the comfort of a few tall cold ones and limber my voice and Hran, such that I may earn my supper at the local tavern... or just keep aling - or should that be ailing ?

In case I am in no condition to rejoin my new found commrades after tonights' session, PPPPPP = proper planning prevents piss poor performance, should anyone be wondering.
