Tune Req: Songs of/about psychology

Subject: Songs of/about psychology
From: GUEST,TomK

A psycologist where I work is retiring and a buddy of mine and I would like to do a couple of humorous songs relating to psycology or mental/emotional shortcomings we may have. So far we can only think of Crazy(Patsy Cline)and Twisted (Joni Mitchell). This is in no way meant to offend anyone who truly suffers from above conditions. I just can't be PC all the time. Anywho, thanks for any suggestion you may have. Tom

Tom Lehrer's "Oedipus Rex" is in the DT; also try "Mad about the boy" ,"Dr Jazz" ("When I'm trouble bound and mixed, he's the guy that gets me fixed")
RtS (Oedipus, Schmoedipus, what does it matter as long as a boy loves his mother?)

ANY song by Tom Lerher i.e. "I Hold your Hand in Mine" (...the night you died, I cut it off, I really don't know why, 'cause now each time I kiss it, I get bloodstains on my tie...) "The Irish Maid" (She cut her baby brother in two... , served him up as an Irish stew... , ...and invited the neighbor's in. She drowned her sister in the creek... , the water tasted bad for a week... , so we had to make do with gin, etc.). A Harvard math prof gone mad in the early sixties, with a new double CD release of those original tunes. Sung by former Marines with reverence...the man understood.

Well, if you want to really push the PC envelope, do "Pay Me My Money Down" but change the lyrics to reflect the business side of the helping profession.

I have heard practitioners talk about the notion that some people don't want to get better-- they want to pay someone to listen to them not get better.

Imagine the poor shrink sitting there wanting to really help folks but being faced with the need to make rent this month and all's s/he has to work with at the moment are whiners. Here at Mudcat we have a $5 fine for whining, but the professional relationship over it has to be an interesting part of one's career.

To address the possibility of professional burnout, you'd want to include "They're Coming to Take Me Away."

To address the human being trying to help in an artificailly structured setting, there's "I Need a Hug" from Fred Small, which I think has a verse about hugs being off limits in therapy because of all those sex abuse/detachment issues.

Then there would be transference-- and doctor-patient love affairs... must have been Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, "Oh I think I'm goin' out of my head... yes I think I'm going out of my head, over you...." (or is it [mind], I can't remember.)

Somebody ought to ask Mudcatters Harpgirl and Morticia; they'll know some more I bet.

~Susan

Also Neil Innes' (of Bonzo Doo-Dah etc. fame) song "Paradise Lost" contains the lines:

The clients of a plastic surgeon
Weeping on an analyst's couch

Although the whole song has a lot more to do with the various types of people you find in L.A. than just these two.

From: catspaw49

Let's not forget Shel Silverstein's classic........

FREAKIN' AT THE FREAKER'S BALL

C'mon babies. grease your lips.
Put on your hats, and swing your hips.
Don't forget to bring your whips.
We're goin' to the Freakers Ball.

Blow your whistle.bang your gong --
Roll up somethin' to take along.
Feels so good. it must be wrong -
Freakin' at the Freakers Ball.

All the fags and dikes, they're boogyin' together --
Leather freaks dressed in all kinds of leather.
The greatest of the Sadists and the Masochists, too,
Screamin' "Please hit me" and "I'll hit you".

F.B.I. dancin' with the junkies -
All the Straights swingin' with the Funkies
'Cross the floor and up the wall
Freakin' at the Freakers Ball.

Everybody is lovin' each other --
Brother with sister. son with mother.
Smear my body up with butter,
And take me to the Freakers Ball.

So pass that roach and pour the wine --
I'll kiss yours and you'll kiss mine.
I'm gonna boogie til I go blind --
Freakin' at the Freakers Ball.

Black ones, white ones, yellow and red ones --
Necropheliacs lookin' for dead ones.
The greatest of the Sadists and the Masochists, too --
Screaming' "Please hit me" and "I'll hit you".

Everybody ballin' in batches --
Pyromaniacs strikin' matches.
I'm gonna itch me where it scratches --
Freakin' at the Freakers Ball, y'all
Freakin' at the Freakers Ball.

Oh, my aching memory! There's another great song out there about CJ Jung. Check with some other Folk Project members in New Jersey. It's worth looking for.

Joni Mitchell's "Twisted":

My analyst told me that I was right out of my head/the way he described it/He said I'd be better dead htan alive/I didn't listen to his jive/I knew all along/that he was all wrong/and I knew that he thought/ I was crazy but I'm not/Oh no.

.... I like the last part best: My analyst told me.../But I said dear doctor /I think that it's you instead/because I have a thing /that's unique an d new/ to prove it I'll have/ the last laugh on you/cause instead of one head/I got two/And you know two heads are better than one.

"The Ballad of Sigmund Freud" as recorded by the first version of the Chad Mitchell Trio (Mitchell/Kobluk/Pugh) on the Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall album on May 2, 1960. I'll look up the lyric if anyone's interested. Ray

Joe Hall used to do a neat number called Brain Damage Suite. You might find a recording, if you are lucky. I heard him do it live with Tony Quarrington on guitar many years ago. He spit beer on the audience as he performed.

I have to go dig through my boxes of records but there is one record that all fit this category. The record was by a woman but I've forgotten her name (Katie someone?). Lately she's been doing traditional cowboy songs.

I'll find it tomorrow.

Dig out a copy of Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue" album and check out "Psycho." It's creepy and haunting (and funny) with the attention-getting chorus hook, "You think I'm psycho, don't you, Mama?"

Man this is more brain music than I thought was out there. That Tom Lehrer is pretty damn funny. Spitting beer on the audience, now there's an attention getter. I'm going to need therapy after trying to decide. Again, thanks to all. Tom
