Songs of Greeting and Welcome ???

Subject: Songs of Greeting and Welcome ???
From: Tinker

I'm putting together a song book for camp staff and this is one of the catagories we want to include. It's been my hardest so far. So far I've got...

Hello, Hello (round)
Open the door(chorus Judy Collin's Song for Judith)
You and Me ( camp song)
Vive l'Amour

Any suggestions for ways to sing Howdy???

I did check the DT, but most of the welcomes are for lovers or aren't quiet what the camp director had in mind. Forum search is almost impossible given the number of hardy welcomes 'catters regularly extend...:~>
Thanks

Tinker

There's a sort of country song that the chorus goes something like;

It's good to see you, so good to see you,
O how I've missed you, since you've been gone.
I've crossed the ocean, travelled through many lands,
So good to see you, to be in your home.

Not much good I know but I'll keep thinking!!

best wishes, Yvonne

I do this one with younger children in my singing games workshop
to the tune of Frere Jaques
My name's (whetever), My name's (whatever),
Who are you? Tell us do
be all would like to meet you, say "hello" and greet you
How do you do, How do you do.
I sit all the children in a circle, I start and sing this to the person next to me, when I have finished, me ans the person next to me sing it to the person next to them and so on round the circle. It's a good ice breaker.

An old Shaker song:

Welcome here, welcome here,
All be alive and of good cheer
Welcome here, welcome here,
All be alive and of good cheer.
I've got a pie all baked complete,
Pudding, too, that's very sweet,
I've got a pie all baked complete,
Pudding, too, that's very sweet.
Welcome here, welcome here,
All be alive and of good cheer
Welcome here, welcome here,
All be alive and of good cheer.

An old camp song I remember:
We're all together again, we're here, we're here,
We're all together again, we're here, we're here,
Who knows when we'll be all together again,
We're all together again, we're here, we're here.

Then of course there's the immortal:
Good morning to you! Good morning to you!
You really look drowsy, in fact you look lousy,
Is this any way to start a new day?

There is a song I've used occasionally as an opener. It's called "How do you". I don't recall who wrote it, but I do remember that Bob Gibson used to open with it. I don't know yet how to arrange the words on the screen but the first verse goes like this:

How do you, how do you,
How's your sister how's your brother, how are you,
Oh you make me feel so good, you cheer up my neighborhood,
As we shake it up and down with a how do you do.

I'll bet someone can find the song and post it. CHEERS, Bob

Here's another one I ust found in the News Chronicle song book:
WE'RE HERE FOR FUN
to the tune of Auld Lang Syne:
We're here for fun right from the start,
Pray drop your dignity;
Just laugh and sing with all your heart,
And show your loyalty.
All other meetings we've enjoyed,
Let this one be the best,
Join in the songs we sing today,
Be happy with the rest.

I thought that was rather nice! (if maybe a little twee!) I think I might use taht one too!

You didn't say what age group, but there are several on this page. Just scroll down to the table and click on Welcome. There are also quite a few Scout songs that could be adapted to some other kind of camp here.

Do you know "The More We Get Together"? Tune is Did You ever see a Lassie?

The more we get together, together, together,
The more we get together the happier we'll be.
For your friends are my friends, and my friends are your friends,
The more we get together, the happier we'll be.

Make New Friends (round)
Make new friends, and keep the old, one is sliver and the other gold.
(There may be more to that one........)

The age group is very wide. Camp ranges from 7 to 16 so music has to cover alot of bases. I had forgotten about "name" songs. Another good one in that catagory is 'Sha na na na". It even works with older kids .

Sha na na na, sha na na na, Hey Hey Hey (Name)

Thanks all, There's a few new things for me to look into here

Boy, I should NEVER try to post at four in the morning. I screwed up with my previous posting of "How do you too." I remember now that it was written by Woody (Sorry Woody). And I also remember that I learned this song from the singing of Rolf Cahn (Kahn?) in the San Francisco bay area in 1959. Also, the song I should have remembered that Bob Gibson used to open with was:

Some Come to dance, some come to play, some mearly come, to pass time away, some come to laugh, their voices do ring, but as for me, I come for to sing. etc. CHEERS, Bob

Make new friends, and keep the old, One is silver and the other's gold. Nope, that's all there is to that one. Simple and beautiful. Brought back memories.

DM, at my school we've added some verses:

Make new friends, but keep the old,
One is silver and the other gold.
Take one hand, and take the other,
Put them together and you have each other.
A circle is round, but has no end,
That's how long I'll be your friend.

Awwwwwwww!

Anybody remember the song Andy Stewart used to sing at the start of "The White Heather Club" each week? Fairly banal as I recall. The first two lines , if I remember correctly, were
"Come in, come in, it's nice to see you
How's yourself? You're looking fine"

Just came in on this thread as i was trying to get words for Judy Collins' "Song for judith" - a real feel-good song which I've just discovered on her "best of" CD.
Then I saw Quincey's posting: "It's good to see you" was written by Allan Taylor, and is a great opening song for any gig.

Dear Murray, thank you for mentioning 'Come in, Come in' and 'Andy
Stuart' who wrote and first recorded it in 1959 for the 'White Heather Club'. When I played gigs for the old folks' homes from 2001 with my old school friend to when he left last year I played it, and when my mate was there we always started every show we did but he would sing it and I accompanied on the accordian but, when he left this song is still played to this day. thank you Murray from Joe.

How 'bout "There's a meetin' here tonight" as done by The Limeliters:

Some come to dance
Some come to play
Some merely come to pass time away
Some come to laugh
Their voices do ring
But as for me I come for to sing

'Cause there's a meetin' here tonight
There's a meetin' here tonight
I know you by your friendly face
There's a meetin' here tonight

There's a meetin' here tonight
There's a meetin' here tonight
I know you by your friendly face
There's a meetin' here tonight

There's a meetin' here tonight Great God
I'm glad you came along
Hope all the brothers and the sisters here
will help me sing this song

There's a meetin' here tonight
There's a meetin' here tonight
I know you by your friendly face
There's a meetin' here tonight

There's a grin on every upturned face
And a smile in every eye
Borthers and sisters let me hear you shout
Let me hear your joyful cry

There's a meetin' here tonight
There's a meetin' here tonight
I know you by your friendly face
There's a meetin' here tonight

There is a meetin' here
There is a meetin' here
I know you by your friendly face
There's a meetin' here tonight

There's a meetin' here tonight
There's a meetin' here tonight
I know you by your friendly face
There's a meetin' here tonight

There's a meetin' here tonight Great God
There's a meetin' here tonight Great God
I know you by your friendly face
There's a meetin' here tonight

The song below is the first track on my CD - Home From Home.

Tim Radford

COME, COME MY FRIENDS.
(William Bartlett Ð Wimborne, Dorset
augmented with other Hants/Dorset versions)

Come, come my friends
We do intent, this night to spend in mirth
With all my heart IÕll drink my part
And good liquor shall quench our thirst

Chorus
For in laughing Joking Drinking Smoking
Laughing Joking Drinking Smoking
This night weÕll spend in mirth,
This night weÕll spend in mirth.

A man that has wealth and starve himself
He might as well be poor
The man that has gold and keep it old
That man had better not been born.

Come ring that bell that we may tell
The secrets of our mind
Come tell to me if you be free
For to mirth we are inclined.

This is a tough assignment, since you're trying to appeal to everybody from 7 to 16.

But, if you don't mind the adults being driven bonkers by it, you could possibly try:

We're here because we're here because we're here because we're here Etc.

Tune:   Auld Lang Syne

It's Good To See You by Allan Taylor

It's good to see you, so good to see you
Oh how I've missed you since I've been gone
'Cause I've crossed the oceans, travelled through many lands
And it's good to see you, to be in your home

There is something in me that needs to wander
There is many a land I have to see
When I'm far away in a land of strangers
I know my good friends think on me

Chorus: 1st verse

When a man is down, down on his fortune
He stands alone, sometimes alone
He looks around him, looking for an open hand
Sometimes there's one, sometimes there's some

Chorus: 1st verse

Oh it's a wonder when it comes to friendship
No matter how far away, no matter how long
There's a constant thread that's never broken
It ties me to my friends and home

Chorus: 1st verse

Alex Campbell used to do a great version of it, using for the last line of the 3rd verse: "Sometimes there's one, oftimes there's none".

Don Williams does a good version on YouTube, here's my attempt at making a blue clicky link to it...

Another one of mine - a good chorus song

CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY

COME IN YOU ARE WELCOME TO JOIN IN THE SONG
AND CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY
AND IF YOU'RE A STRANGER YOU WON'T BE FOR LONG
SO CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY

CHORUS
SO SING TILL THE SUN RISES UP IN THE SKY
DRINK TILL YOU'VE DRUNK THE WHOLE BARREL DRY
AND WITH NEVER A GRUMBLE OR NEVER A SIGH
CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY

IF YOU TRAVELLED HERE THROUGH THE MIRK AND THE MIRE
TO CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY
THEN PULL UP A CHAIR, AND GET WARM BY THE FIRE
AND CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY

SO LIFT UP YOUR VOICES, SING LOUD AND SING CLEAR
AND CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY
BE THEY HAPPY OR SAD SONGS, WE'LL ALL LEND AN EAR
AND CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY

WITH A GLASS IN YOUR HAND AND A SMILE ON YOUR FACE
CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY
IN THE WHOLE OF THE LAND THERE'S NO BETTER PLACE
TO CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY

WITH MUSIC AND LAUGHTER AND GOOD COMPANY
CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY
LEAVE WORRIES BEHIND, LET YOUR SPIRIT BE FREE
AND CAROL THE NIGHT AWAY
