I am expanding the offer I made in this thread:

The original offer pertained to a bunch of southern gospel tapes I had. Since our housefire, I have been doing some further organizing, and it's become clear that I have more genres besides southern gospel.

So actually I am glad I never sent them out, because I see a larger project possible. I plan to use this thread to manage it. The balance of this post will contain my thoughts on what to do with all this music if you decide to participate. (Trace this thread if you sign up please.)

People who want to participate can do so by e-mailing me-- requesting the sign-up form. They will go out in batches of six tapes, because I got some free eight-pocket vinyl tape albums. Each set will include various genres and the tape quality will vary.

At a minimum, participants will be expected to listen to and enjoy the tapes, and send them on to the next participant promptly (or be "busted" for procrastination in this thread!).

Be aware up front that the sound quality will be poor to good-- what you will gain is mostly the chance to learn some new songs, for it is the songs that are the point here, not who did them or when or how they arranged them perfectly. Some of these tapes are copies of copies. Others are copies of very old LP's. Some are newer and in good shape, or recent copies off CD's. None of them are in good enough shape to make saleable bootleg copies-- these are, of course, for personal study only. I will appreciate you not running them through filthy equipment or leaving them in your car with carfood crumbs. (Do as I say, not as I do.)

Several of these tapes contain only a few gospel songs. Sure, I could copy these off onto gospel compilation tapes, but you know, I don't have time, and anyway why leave the other stuff out? It's all good! More lyrics to harvest, some of them non-gospel? Sure!

Some participants will feel like they want to do something to help-- to leave the collection in better shape than they found it. Here are some ideas.

  • There are J-cards for some tapes, but not all. You might be moved to word process a songlist for one or more of the tapes that are missing their J-cards.

  • Perhaps you have the lyrics to some of these, or are willing to fetch them off other lyric sites or transcribe them. These can be posted at Mudcat-- after checking first to see if they are already posted here. It would make sense to tuck a note into the tape album saying which ones have been researched and posted, for the next user's information. And it would be even nicer to print whatever words are found, to tuck in as well.

  • Some of the songs will seem very obscure, especially due to sound quality, and you may be moved to post a Mudcat lyric request for help determining what the piece is and how it goes. Again, a note about this tucked into the album will be appreciated.

  • Maybe you will know some interesting things about the history of a song, or variants. Your notes added to the collection will benefit all. (Of course post these too if you are posting.)

    • As I indicated, each set will include six tapes in an eight-pocket album. Obviously some people will want to add a tape into the album to pass along-- where do you think I got some of these gems in the first place? *G* In such moments of generosity, it would be great if you also included a xerox of any liner notes, etc. available, and especially if these include lyrics-- oh joy!

    How many sets will there be?
    Oh God!! Don't ask! I am still sorting, and if in doubt, I am throwing it into the project pile! So there will be sets of sets, going around among different groups-- each set will come back to me at the end of its loop to be sent out to one of the other groupings of participants.

    The first ones will go out next week to people who already indicated interest in the past. More signups are definitely encouraged.

    Let's make the best possible use of this resource. Wait till you hear these great classics!

    Well, I have to make a couple of changes already. There are 14 sets now of 6 tapes each. I'm out of vinyl albums too. So instead of leaving two of the 8 pockets empty for new tapes you might add, I have to stuff them... because I still have at l;east a dozen CDs to copy.

    So I guess any new ones will have to come to me directly. That makes more sense anyway, so I can send them back out and around. Otherwise whoever was "above" the contributor in the mail list would miss getting them.

    This also means that if anyone wants to send me stuff to put into the stream, I'd be glad to do it. It would even be worth it to me to buy more tape albums.

    So much music, so little time.

    Another change-- I think I better limit the offer to Mudcat members. With regret. But I think I better.

    It's almost 4 p.m. here, and I have a nagging doubt that my maths aren't good enough to really understand some of the above (well ... unless I take off my shoes and use my toes ... to which our office PA might object) but I think I get the drift.

    So, does this offer apply internationally?

    Yes. It just requires some coordination thought, but there is enough material to send a good bit of it overseas to circulate there, and then swap for the US-circulated sets later.

    For example Mudcatter Quincy has agreed to send them around the UK and look over any UK recipient list to make it simplest, and maybe add more people as it goes on. Anyone anywhere else (outside US or UK) will need to agree to coordinate their area similarly for me to see the sense (stewardship-wise) of the international postage. In practical terms it means whoever signs up first from that area gets the package first, and agrees to get it back to send to me. International postage.... ???? I'm willing to pay it outbound but not return trip. Make sense? Other ideas on handling that aspect?

    And Sian, I figured you'd sign up! You in, then? *G*

    Oh dear. Sian, you've just inadvertently created a name for the project.

    Now I know what to put on the album sleeves to make them easily identified as they lay around people's homes!

    I think I'll steal it for a new band name too. The Good News-Goodtime Band.... maybe it needs to morph a bit.

    I had me a quick fix gospel hoot all morning, BTW, making a few more tapes. You'll see! HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING??? (Karaoke with Jesus!)

    Also thought that to set up the routing slips for each set I should do like the song says-- I'M USING MY BIBLE FOR A ROADMAP.

    sian, as I have been taping the last several days, it has been really interesting to hear some of the hymns done in a variety of styles-- I've never listened to so much all at once before, across genres, so it's really noticeable. Just imagine some other classics, usually done in a mainstream choral style, but now kicked up to Grand Ole Opry style. It's a riot! Or Nearer My God to Thee, done in hushed awe by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir with full orchestration... followed by Mississippi John Hurt's delta-picked version, with words that sound like Nero, My God, to Thee. It's just a bit of a mindfu.... oops! excuse me!

    I don't think I relate to the "classics usually done in a mainstream choral style". I grew up with all the Sankey/ Moody stuff, but it was always white gospel / tent revival stuff ... even in small town Methodist Southern Ontario. I also grew up with belting out Welsh hymns at North American Welsh hymn events, which is closer to the above minus the power-mad basses and tenors. (OK - so the Mormon Tabs. were originally a Welsh choir ... so they aren't half bad!)

    Well, then imagine how surprised you will be to hear old Sankey stuff done mainstream style!

    I should mention too how I came buy a lot of this material, or some of you will wonder about my mind. Remember good old Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker? PTL? Several of the audio tapes someone had made of PTL broadcasts were included in the boxful of tapes that were anonymously donated to our church thrift shop. I co-opted all the tapes to learn what was, then, a new genre for me-- contemporary praise music. I figure, see, that if there are some good songs on those tapes, it'll be worth sifting through whatever crap is also on them. But no, I am not a supporter of PTL and related ilk!

    MUSIC! I want more MUSIC!

    Two CDs left-- Cynthia Clawson, dreamy Appalachian singer, doing some standards prayerfully and richly in her amazing contralto-- over a background of plainsong CHANT! Wha-hoo!! And, GREGORIAN CHANT CHRISTMAS, side B. Gee I hope they both fit in their entirety-- I'm running out of tape and empty slots to stick 'em!

    Xerox the week's worth of liner notes from the CDs to tuck in... maybe tonight at church!

    Now if ONLY the tape XXXXX sent me would turn up again-- he wrote some pieces that are on there and (pssss.... psss...pssppsss.... ) Hmmmmmm.... and YYYYYY..... what about the long lost ZZZZZZ tape? Did that have a hymn or two as well? Huh! You'll have to sign up to find out who these Mudcatters are!

    And why is a Joan Baez album in there? I dunno! Seemed to make sense at the time! Yup, and isn't there a hymn on each of those Doc Watson tapes too? TALK ABOUT SUFFERIN! PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND!

    No, jeepal, but the tape from the Gaither Homecoming Hour that includes her singing "Hear the Voice of My Beloved" may have just turned up at long last, in the car!!!, in time to be included.

    I should probably mention that I have many of the lyrics to the material in this library among my songbooks. I do post them as I create new songsheets, for pieces we will do in church, and I will be glad to post any others that are requested as we move the tapes along.

    PS for jeepman. Here's a new trick if you are using Internet Explorer.

    Right now, while you have this post in front of you, look at the far right side of your screen. See the up-down button, the slidy elevator thing? Note in you mind where it is sitting right now. Mark it with a post-it if you need to.

    Then, mouse up to your View menu at the top of the browser. Click Source. You will get a screenful of white space with occasional flows of gobbledegook. The gobbledegook is the HTML coding and text of this thread.

    Use that elevator button to slide to the same spot it was at, when you were reading my post. Look around until you find my post in the gobbledegook.

    In my post, you will see the text for my e-mail message, surrounded by the gobbledegook that makes it look and work like it does. Highlight that with your mouse, and push Control and C at the same time to put it on your clipboard.

    Now close the View/Source page and the thread will reappear.

    With your cursor in the posting box, push Control and V at the same time and the e-mail clicky should appear. Submit the message to see if it worked. If you locked up the thread instead, report that in the Help Forum!

    You can use the same technique (View/Source) to see HTML coding that makes other things look and work as they do, whenever you see something in someone's post that looks cool. I have a pageful of these in a word processor document that I keep open alongside the Mudcat window, for easy access. I copy and paste from these instead of typing in the HTML commnads for most of what I do. There is more about this in the FAQ thread and related threads it lists.

    If that's too mysterious for you, then the answer to a whole new world of fun is easy-- find a kid and ask them to show you three simple things-- having multiple windows open, highlighting text, and drag&drop.

    RtS, I dunno, I will have to ask Dharmabum. Let's see.... what was on it... can't recall any titles now. Can you?

    Just for the record-- any tapes that have been made are backup copies people have made, myself included, for learning material when out on long drives. They aren't made to be endlessly bootlegged; one way I make sure they won't be is that the tape I use is OK quality, but not what you'd want for a duplicating master.

    Great Idea WYSIWYG, But , Maybe to save you some trouble a Mudcat trade library could be established. People could find others who have what they are looking for and swap, Like many Dead Heads or Dylan fans do on line. All that would be neccassary is a semi-perma thread. Erase and start over once a month , more or less, so not to get too daunting or outdated in requests and offers. More later gotta go back to work...

    Finally got here. Reading over all of the postings and listings, it looks like I could add something to the library. I have a semi-vast collection of black gospel.. enough to have eight 60 minute tapes of prime stuff already made into listening tapes. You've got the first two. It includes everything from older mass Choirs, like the Abyssinian Baptist Gospel Choir, to Reverend Gary Davis, Roosevelt Graves and other folk-gospel black artists. I'll keep feeing them to you. Maybe you can do a set of just black gospel for those folks who haven't heard much of it.

    What's new? I have a couple dozen tapes added to the mix, including Lomax stuff from LOC MP3s. I can post the songlists for those.

    Jerry, I would like a set from you. I passed along the several you sent earlier, and did not get them back, but if you send me the bigger set I think you have, I will be sure it gets into the lending set.

    I have a set of Sacred Harp tapes and book Burke donated.

    I'd love to put the "Goodbye Babylon" boxed set into the library, if people wanted to chip in. I can get a discount ($60 total for the set).

    That's gonna be it on tapes. I'm going all digital from this point on. The newer stuff I have found here and there already is digital. The songlist would be too long to post here, but I may find a place to hang it up somewhere.

    The mix continues to be very eclectic as far as styles within "gospel."

    And Jeep, please, send back the batch of tapes you have, OK? Thanks.
