How low in the Hudson Valley are you? Above or below the Tappan Zee Bridge? Capital District?

Hi, caiti - I'm over the river in Putnam County. Would you like to come to an open Irish session once a month in Garrison? It's at Guinan's, a delicatessin (really!) with a tiny bar in the back porch overlooking the Hudson. We get together on the first Thursday after the full moon (really!), starting around 9:00 and going until...late. The quality of the music varies widely depending on who shows up, but it's very, very friendly no matter what. Just take the Bear Mountain Bridge, go north on 9D to the intersection/traffic light at Rte. 403. Go left at that intersection onto Lower Station Road (I think it's Lower, but it might be Upper... anyway, go left at the light), and then wind your way down the hill toward the river. You can park in the train station parking lot, cross over to the other (river)side of the tracks, and then you can't miss Guinan's, it's right at the foot of the ramp from the train platform, and it's the ONLY thing open in Garrison. Let me know if you need more info, I'd be delighted to meet you there. This month the session will be on the 15th, which is next Thursday. Margaret

Wow, that's a date that's challenging to figure out each month!!! They have an Irish seisun every week at my "home club" the Mermaid, but what I really go for is the open circle on the first and third Thursday.

Hey caiti,

If you are given the chance to hear Margaret V live--run, don't walk to that deli! She's one of the best you're going to hear from around these parts.

Wish I could be there....kind of a dearth of singing sessions here on the Big Island. But I'll be thinking about you folks.

I grew up in Mt. Kisco, but my folks used to take us up to Bear Mountain frequently -- many years ago (more than 30)-- thanks for the memories of the region. Sing well!

That's funny Paul, I grew up in Mt. Kisco too. Do we know each other? Cait, I just got home from Guinan's and don't think you were there while I was--I got there around 9:30, and someone said there was someone looking for me; so I went around to all the strangers I saw asking "is your name Cait" but they all shook their heads and said no. It was a rather atypical night, I'm afraid--VERY crowded I suppose because of the holiday. Anyway, I'm sorry if you came and then worried because I wasn't there yet. When it's that crowded I imagine it could seem daunting (or just plain claustrophobia-inducing). I hope we get the chance to meet up and play some music soon! Margaret

hi margaret! yes, we left right about 9:30, i was told you come later in general. if you're blonde, we might've crossed at the entrance...i have frizzy red hair (at the moment) and was wearing a green dress.

i brought my husband along, and though i'd've stuck it out by myself, standing elbow to elbow is NOT his thing, so we left.

it seemed a neat gathering and i was thrilled to hear as much as i did, including the lovely brogues, a gent called jimmy (i believe) made nice to give me a chair to sit in, i felt like the bloody queen.

Yes, i did ask for you. wasn't worried about you, though...i mean, we didn't leave for that reason.

so, i'll try it the next time, all right? have a great st paddy's, won't you? and thanks for the info. it looked to be a lovely area, i'd like to see it in the daytime. -caiti

Like ships in the night! Ah well, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, and you should know that Jimmy is Jimmy Guinan himself, the proprietor and man responsible for this gathering. He is wonderfully kind, and a rather nice singer too. It's always cramped (what do you suppose that back room measures -- 10 X 16?), but it's not ususally quite such a mob scene... so come on back and give us a song, I am sure you will continue to be treated like royalty! Margaret --

I graduated from Fox Lane High School in 1971 -- haven't been back much since. Up to that point I had spent my whole life there (Mt. Kisco). Close to the time you were there?

Margaret,

This sounds an awful lot like a place my Uncle described being a regular participant at. His name is Frank, he plays tenor banjo, mandolin and fiddle. He is one of the quietest people on the planet. Sound familiar? I was just at his daughter's wedding last Saturday at the Bear Mountain Inn.

Sure I know your uncle, Steve! In fact we just played a gig together (along with seven other folks in a spontaneously named "Rising of the Moon Ceili Band") at a retirement home on Monday night. I've mainly heard him play mandolin, he's lovely at it. Next time you're in the area, give a holler! Paul, I graduated from Fox Lane ten years after you, so I suppose we missed each other at school, but I was indeed living there in 1971, up on Captain Merritt's Hill where my folks still live. I'm about 45 minutes away from there now, having lived at various times in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Margaret

Margaret,

Wow, what a small world. My Uncle Frank is one of my favourite people on the planet. I am from the only branch of Latimers who don't hail from New York. I live in Canada just outside Toronto, so I don't get down that way too often. Most of my other Uncles and Aunt live up near Wurtsboro, so usually when I go down I go there and he often comes up and meets us. But he has mentioned Guianan's, I'd love to get there sometime. I know that some of my uncles and cousins have been there and loved it. I usually come down on a Friday and drive back on Sunday or Monday, so Thursdays are tough.

Please tell him you were "talking" to me. He'll be thrilled.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

Yup, that's pretty neat, Steve! I will surely tell him so when next I see him, and I hope you can fit a post-full-moon Thursday into one of your sojourns some time. By the way, you're not related to the Latimers that lived in Pound Ridge too, are you? Margaret

Margaret,

I don't believe that we are, but as I don't know where Pound Ridge is we could be. We are a very large family, perhaps one of my cousins has moved there. My Uncle would know.

Just about to have some Soda Bread. I'm holding off on the Guinness for awhile.
