07 Mar 01 - 11:40 PM (#413154) Subject: RE: Religious door knockers continued From: Tinker Guess I count as having been a knocker, since I spent several college summers with the Southwestern Company selling Dictionaries,Childrens Stories and Bible Encyclopedias out in Ohio and down in Texas, I tend to approach each unknown knock with a bit of tolerence and a minute or two of time. We had very good training and I've got to say, I did meet my husband out there. Course there was the time in Miamisburg that the cops ran me out of town, because last years magazine salewomen were part of a prostitution ring and even calls to Nashville wouldn't convince them I should be allowed to knock doors... We were among the first women allowed to sell along with the guys. Until the mid 70's women were only allowed to sell cookbooks... but it was good money and actually a lot of fun...Learnt alot... Only took me a month to figure out that Bubba wasn't a 'real' name. Tinker |

How you (I) phrased things, reacted to angry (or nice) responses from others, even syntax and spelling. Like some, I first came here practically salivating at the thought of discussing folk music minutiae with others as obsessed with the subject as I was and am. I was blown away by some of the dry humour and writing skills that I witnessed every day. Discussions on traditional (mainly) unaccompanied ballads were simply fascinating, and since that's not my field of expertise, I eavesdropped rather than added. I eagerly participated in threads about early recorded Country, blues, and Bluegrass music, and having played several instruments for many years, tried to volunteer as much info as I could. When the forum became more popular and therefore naturally more general in tone, I found it fun to tell some "stories from the road" and get involved more in "social issues". (after all, there are only SO many people who care about Riley Puckett's finger-pick, or the Delmore Brothers) It's in reading some of these "social" threads that have been brought up from the depths, that you can see how you change and how you stay the same. Today (and I think Mudcat is somewhat responsible) I'm far more tolerant of people who need religion in the forefront of their lives, than I was before. Not their leadership, but the rank and file. Yeah, I still make jokes, but I'd really think twice about making them here...simply because I've gotten to know the many OTHER sides of the religious ones. Truth to tell, in real life, I simply haven't the time or the inclination to dig beneath the surface and find some meetings of the mind. One thing I haven't altered though, is my reaction to the "door to door soul savers". Even to the deeply indoctrinated it must be a hell of a lousy gig. A smile and a simple "no thanks" has never failed to work. Same with the telemarketers. After all, half of them are probably out of work musicians! Rick |

I am an advocate of polite but firm. You have to expect to SAY NO TWICE. 1. Can I tell you about xxxxxxxx? 2. Would you care to tell me why you don't want (your soul saved, to save money, etc.)
This approach has only once ever failed to result in a polite disengagement. She was screaming at me as I hung up that it wasn't fair, I hadn't given her a chance...yadda yadda yadda. Click. W-O

I wanted in the worst way an Encyclopedia at home, and my parents couldn't afford one. I had to go to the Public Library every time I needed it.
When Luke was about a year old, we had an Encyclopedia salesperson come to the door. I didn't even let her finish her spiel, just drug her inside and grabbed my checkbook! She was speechless with surprise. I let her go thru the whole thing, just kept saying, Yes.
We bought the whole schmiel--everything she had for sale, including a wonderful Kids Kit, with a magic pen that lit up when you touched the correct answer. Little flippy books that helped teach the kid reading, Atlas, all of it.
The kids literally wore out the Kid Kit, and I still LOVE my Encyclopedias! They're lifesavers when I get a wild hair to know something obscure at midnight. 'Course, now, there is the Internet. When all else fails, and I have nothing to read, I just grab a volume and dive in! (I give pretty short shrift to the religious ones, tho) |

I told them this wasn't a good time as I was home sick, and they went to sell me a Watchtower mag, and I said, this really isn't a good time, and they said okay and left. On better days I would drag them inside, to my altar with icons of dozens of saints, and explain to them the Holy Orthodox Faith. Hehehehe. Maybe even put on my clerical robes. Bwahahaha. Or not. But there's no need to be rude unless they really refuse to take "no" as an answer -- and the JW's are trained to be polite in being turned away. Alex |
