Lyr Req: I Am Weary, Let Me Rest

I'm looking for the lyrics to "I Am Weary, Let Me Rest". I've searched several data bases where there are supposed to be lyrics and no luck as yet. I would also appreciate the addresses of any other links where I can find lyrics to "Old Time" gospel and bluegrass music.

Thanks for the link but that isn't the one. The one I'm searching for was written by Pete Roberts. I'm obviously not proficient with submitting queries because I've been everywhere and can't find simple lyrics.

Hi, MtGirl - if you can give us a few phrases from what you remember of the song, it might help us find it. Anything you can tell us will help - where you yeard it, name of performer, general story the song tells, whatever.

Are you looking for the version on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack? The one that starts "Kiss me mother/Kiss your darlin/Lay my head/Upon your breast...'"?

Yes!!

The one that starts "Kiss Me Mother, Kiss Your Darlin". I hadn't thought of it in 100 years but my grandmother used to sing a song that sounded very much like that when we were working in the kitchen. She had specific songs for specific work.....Outside work was "Down By the Sally Garden"....and stipping floors was "In the Pines" and "Knoxville Girl". Very hard work but very very fond memories of childhood.

"Kiss Me Mother, Kiss Your Darling!" (10 Oct. 1864)
Song & Chorus
Sung by Joseph Whitaker Esq. of Christy's Minstrels
Words by Letta C. Lord
Music by Geo[rge]. F[rederic]. Root[, 1820-1895].

Source: 106-107/109@Levy;
Chicago: Root & Cady, Plate No. 412 5]

1.
Kiss me Mother, kiss your darling,
Lean my head upon your breast,
Fold your loving arms around me,
I am weary, let me rest.
Scenes of life are swiftly fading,
Brighter seems the other shore.
I am standing by the river,
Angels wait to waft me o'er.

CHORUS
Kiss me Mother, kiss your darling
(kiss you darling, Mother,)
Lean my head upon your breast, (upon your breast)
Fold your loving arms around me
(O fold your loving arms around me Mother)
I am weary, let me rest.

2.
Kiss me Mother, kiss your darling,
Breathe a blessing on my brow;
For I'll soon be with the angels,
Fainter grows my breath e'en now.
Tell the loved ones not to murmur,
Say I died our flag to save.
And that I shall slumber sweetly
In the soldier's honored grave.

(CHORUS)

3.
Oh how dark this world is growing;
Hark! I hear the angel band;
How I long to join their number
In that fair and happy land.
Hear you not that heavenly music,
Floating near so soft and low
I must leave you farewell Mother!
Kiss me once before I go.

(CHORUS)

So did Pete Roberts, whoever he is, just do a rewrite of this song? From the page of sheet music I could actually see, the original melody isn't the same as the Cox family recording. Since this is originally from 1864 I would like to add it to our song list but I need some more info first. :-)

As for the original music, there is an interesting description in the second MIDI link I posted above, which is of regimental marches:

94th Regiment - Kiss me Mother, Kiss your Darling - this was the tune the regimental band were playing when the regiment was ambushed at Bronkhurstspruit (20 /12/1880) during the First Anglo-Boer War. Many Anglo-Zulu war veterans were casualties of this engagement

The music and lyrics are also in Lewis Winstock, Songs & Music of the Redcoats 1642-1902 (pp. 227-8).

This is awesome. I'm on cheap mobile and been looking for the title to the song to find lyrics and the song on youtube to post to facebook. Thanks to this thread and those contributed. It is the only mobile source found by my search!
