Subject: 365 'Songs of the Century'
From: Jim Dixon
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America have jointly published a list of what they consider to be the top 365 "Songs of the Century." (See the press release here and the complete list here.)
There is some stuff to quibble about here -- for example, some of these are not songs at all but tunes - but there is a lot to admire, too. Few, if any, are pure "folk" songs in the strictest sense (i.e. songs that arose through the folk process, and no one knows who wrote them). But many, especially the old ones, are (or could be) quite agreeably sung by "folk singers," and many have already been posted or mentioned in Mudcat threads or included in DigiTrad.
I think you will enjoy browsing the list:
"The list is organized by decade and alphabetically by performer(s). The * indicates the song that received the most votes for that decade."
