365 'Songs of the Century'

09 Mar 01 - 12:50 PM (#414119)
Subject: 365 'Songs of the Century'
From: Jim Dixon

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America have jointly published a list of what they consider to be the top 365 "Songs of the Century." (See the press release here and the complete list here.)

There is some stuff to quibble about here -- for example, some of these are not songs at all but tunes - but there is a lot to admire, too. Few, if any, are pure "folk" songs in the strictest sense (i.e. songs that arose through the folk process, and no one knows who wrote them). But many, especially the old ones, are (or could be) quite agreeably sung by "folk singers," and many have already been posted or mentioned in Mudcat threads or included in DigiTrad.

I think you will enjoy browsing the list:

"The list is organized by decade and alphabetically by performer(s). The * indicates the song that received the most votes for that decade."

I suppose that other peoples opinions of what constitutes "top" are quite interesting.

However any list which contains "Achy Breaky Heart" makes me wonder, just what are they cosidered to be "top of"?

We run these things ourselves and then read the "pros" type stuff like this. Nobody will ever agree. Like most lists, this one has some I'd pick, some noticeably missing, and some that make me say, "WHAT??"

Fun reading though and thanks Jim for posting it!!!!

We run these things ourselves and then read the "pros" type stuff like this. Nobody will ever agree. Like most lists, this one has some I'd pick, some noticeably missing, and some that make me say, "WHAT??"

Fun reading though and thanks Jim for posting it!!!!

Apparently there is also the TOP 20 vote getters from this poll and they are on another thread started by Roger the Skiffler this morning.

catspaw49, was that a "double take?" (Wha..?) I fully expected to see Woody and Arlo on there. Thank you Jim.

Either I'm weird, or the people who made the list are. 365 songs and maybe 10 would have been in my top 100. And I think my tastes aren't that abnormal--I'd have picked a lot of the same artists.

For instance, the list includes the first composer I'd think of if you asked for the greatest songwriter of all time--but with one of his worst songs. (Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria".) Where is Marian Anderson's recording of "Der Tod und das Maedchen"?

Some (10?) years ago, there was a PBS special of modern performances of the top songs (not recordings) from the first half of the century. I found a lot more to agree with on that list ("Just One of Those Things", for example). Most memorable moment of the show: Dinah Shore rocking the house on "Blues in the Night".

Trivia question: what piece of music is on the list twice? (Useless hint: it would have made my top 10.)

Before I started this thread, I searched diligently to see if anyone had already started a thread on the same subject. I used the filter to search for threads that contained the words "365" "Songs" "Century" "List" or "Top".

Who would have guessed Woody third but Judy triumphs was about the same list? AAAARRRGGH!

Personally, I never read threads unless the title gives me a pretty good idea of what it's about. The threads with "cute" titles are usually a waste of time.

Thanks anyway, Spaw.

Funny, although Roger the Skiffler's list was ranked, and so was the list in today's St. Paul Pioneer Press, the official list at the NEA's and the RIAA's web sites were NOT ranked. I wonder why? Where are the news media getting their ranked list?

What a stupid list, what a stupid idea, what a waste of time. What is the American National Endowment for the Arts doing with this crap?

100 stupid things Americans have done to infect the world:
1. Stupid list making.
2 - 100. Really Stupid list making.
101. Spending 1 billion dollars on wrecking the Colombian environment.

Peter T: List-making is just another form of entertainment. Some people pitch horseshoes, some people sing songs, some people make (or read) lists of songs. I don't see any harm in any of those activities.

Anyway, it gets the NEA some publicity.

Jim, I think Peter knows that as these kind of lists are pretty popular around here as a source of discusion. Here's one we ran about albums in the 20th century:
