Now you can post MIDI files!

28 Oct 97 - 09:45 AM (#15397)
Subject: Tune Add: BOG DOWN IN THE VALLEY
From: Alan of Australia

G'day,
Here is a way for Mudcat users to share MIDI files. It is a sub-set of a pair of programs I wrote a couple of years ago which produces text representing MIDI events and back again. This version strips out most of the MIDI events, leaving just the melody, and uses about the same amount of space as a set of lyrics.

Once you have obtained the MIDItext software and installed it the basic steps are:-

Sending a File.
Make a MIDI file by whatever means you can, possibly by playing your MIDI keyboard into your sequencer.

Run MID2txt - produces a text file containing the MIDI info.

Copy the entire contents of this text file and paste into the "Reply to Thread" message box. This text is in Mudcat friendly format including a small amount of HTML code.

Receiving a File
Use your mouse to select the small red text and type Ctrl-C (copy).

Open Notepad and paste; save the file.

Run Txt2MID - produces your new MIDI file.

For users of ABC notation MID2txt also does a simple minded conversion to ABC.

Here is the result of sending a file:-

MIDI file: BOGDOWN.MID

Timebase: 480

Name: BOG DOWN IN THE VALLEY
TimeSig: 2/4 24 8

Alan...just double checking...I have only 2 choices..WIN95 & DOS?..I ask because I will have only WIN 3.1 for the forseable furure..(640 mg hard drive-older computer..etc.)

I am real new to this game, and am very much an amateur with DOS...if that's what I must do, I will figure it out.

In any case, thank you VERY much for this breakthrough...I'm sure it will make life a lot easier for some of us as we try to explain to each other what that tune sounds like...(Maybe a lot of people will learn that there 2 tunes to 'Waltzing Matilda', huh? *smile*)

Hi- Thanx much Alan- I'll play with it. Meanwhile, 2 queries: a) do you have something for the Mac types? b) Do you know of a WAV-to-MIDI converter?

Bill,
I'm sure this will work with Win 3.1, I just haven't had a chance to run through an install procedure yet. There are plenty of machines at work with Win 3.1 and I should get a chance this week to sort something out.

Dick,
a) Sorry, I've never had a chance to use a Mac. Are there any Mac C programmers listening? If so you are welcome to my code.

b) There is at least one program (Autoscore) which converts pitch to MIDI fairly successfully. A mate of mine has it but doesn't seem to have used it much. I think there is another program which converts wav to pitch with moderate success. I wouldn't be too hopeful but maybe the two programs could be made to work together.

Cheers,
Alan

Mac Programmers are you listening? er, Bill D., about that Woodturner's Song...when you get a free week or two. It looks as if it takes that long to figure these things out. Worth the wait (today's theme) Yours, Peter T.

G'day, Thanks to Jon W for unearthing a bug. As more people subject the software to MIDI files from many sources other bugs will emerge. The problem is now fixed. To download the October 30 MIDItext 97 software click here

A very basic question from a neophyte who plans on becoming an ABC user: Can the files created with MIDI2text (the red text pasted into the messages above) be read directly by the ABC software, or is there an additional conversion step involved?

Susan-Marie,
MID2txt produces ABC ready to use. Just copy the lines starting with X:1 down to and including the blank line and paste into your editor and save it. Your ABC software should be able to use it.

In the thread "Test of ABC Format" I think Joe Offer said that ABC notation could be copied from the forum and pasted directly into ABCMUS. Click here to see what he said.

Alan

Well, sure hope somone with MAC Expertise shows up!..I'd sure like to get in on the fun with my not so Big Mac! (for Alan's benefit, that's a pun on America's #1 MacDonald's Commercial..)

G'day,
The MIDItext software is still evolving. The latest version is modified slightly to make it more suitable for WIN 3.1. It will be available probably Monday evening (closer for me than most of the world) after I've had a chance to run through the install procedure on a WIN 3.1 machine.

Cheers,
Alan

This is Gary's son speaking. I Know how to program in C if you could send the code via e-mail to Loomil01@stcloudstate.edu I could get it up and running in a few weeks....

Now WIN 3.1 users can do it too!

I have modified the MIDItext programs and worked out the installation procedure for WIN 3.1 users.

Lance,
I will email you the code shortly. I'll first try to improve the ABC conversion. Cheers,
Alan
