"We're a' John Tamson's Bairns" derives from a late 17th century Scotsman, John Thomson, who had a lot of bairns that called him daddy, but only his wife might have known who their real father was. He reappeared in "Up with Aily Aily" about 1745, which is in the Scarce's Songs 1 file on my website. There are a number of unrelated "Jock/John Tamson" songs in the Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection.
I can't find my copy of "Jock Tamson's Bairns" (at least I seem to remember having it at one time) |
