12 Mar 01 - 06:02 PM (#416070) Subject: neat non-folk old music CD's From: Hollowfox My library just started buying CD's, and I stumbled across a really nice set called "Music From The New York Stage, 1890-1920" (Pavilion Records, 1993). It's three sets of three CD's each of original performances. They didn't remaster, just cleaned up the worst of the pops and hissing. Great stuff! I never knew that "all dressed up and nowhere to go" was a song! And you should hear the vamp to "You Made Me Love You". There are some romantic songs, but most of them are novelty songs. I haven't heard all the cd's so far, but I bet you that somebody could get together a set or two of high quality politically incorrect songs that could get the wrong audience chucking bricks at you. I love 'em, and I'm saving my pennies to get 'em. |

I also have some non-folk suggestions for folkie fans...try Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant by Belle & Sebastian. They have really cool folkish-songs, beautiful light listening. Also, check out Bring It On by Gomez. This album is about 80% acoustic and has all sorts of blues & folk roots. These guys are from England, but are masters at combining American roots music into a foot-stomping party. I DARE you to rid "Here Comes The Breeze" from your head! Especially the part with the dobro, washboard, and jaw harp... |

They're a bit on the lines of Vanessa Mae and all have varying careers outside the group, from working on rock videos to serious classical performance. (For all you blokes out there, they don't wear much when they perform, either. My 14 year old daughter keeps nicking off with it). My 20 year old daughter has also bought a copy. She has fairly broad tastes in music, but with a Metallica crazy boyfriend, you can tell which direction they tend to go in! There's a cracking "1812" on it as well as some of their own stuff and even an adaptation of a Russian folk tune. Another good'un I've got is the 1929 recording of Rachmaninov playing his Piano Concerto #2, and the 1939 recording of #3. By 1929 he was sick of performing #2, but it doesn't show. My dad used to have the original 78s, but they were disposed of after he died, and you needed twin decks or a stacking player for them as side 1 had side 10 opposite. Andrea |

OK, since I've already admitted to being a nurd (with all it's spellings) in another thread, I'll tell you about one of my all-time favourite records (probably not on CD...although I wish it was. Un Bel Dia, from Butterfly. Sung by the incomparable Lucretzia Bori, in 1925. I've got recordings of this by virtually every major soprano, but Miss Bori still makes me cry EVERY time. She didn't have the power, or even the total control of some....but that gal could flat out tell the story! Returning to folk-world. Rick |

When I started this thread, I thought in terms of novelty songs, pop songs that had moved (at least somewhat) into tradition, songs over 75 years old, etc. Tom Jones and Carole King were the last performers on my mind. Now, Rick, my library also got a videotape called "Art of Singing: Golden Voices of the Century" (NVC Arts/Warner, 1996). It doesn't have Bori on it, but that's about all that could improve it. Any other Richard Rounseville fans out there? |

One of the members is Greg Leskiw who replaced Randy Bachman in the Guess Who. Wonderful stuff. One of my favourite CD's. I've loaned the CD to Mr. Fielding who seemed to like it as we were playing it as background music to our conversation, but I sure would love to hear his thoughts having given it a good listen.
