16 Oct 96 - 10:37 AM (#78) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Peter Re:Is this "Why Paddy's Not at Work Today?" That sounds right, I think that was the last line in the song. Do you have any idea who recorded it and if the lyrics are around anywhere |
16 Oct 96 - 07:24 PM (#79) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Ian Fraser I have a version of this song by the Corries, "The Compact Collection" CD, Lismor Digital LCOM 9006 Unfortunately they do not give the lyric. They list Cooksey/Hoffnung/Murphy-Cop Con after the title, so those may be the authors. Let me know if you cannot find the lyric and I'll transcribe it. Ian (frasers@erols.com) |
17 Oct 96 - 11:05 AM (#83) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Peter Thanks to all. I found the lyrics under that name searching under "irish music lyrics" If anyone is interested I can pass along the actual site. The version I heard was a solo rendition titled "The Bricklayer's Lament" but I will see if I can find the Corries version |
20 Oct 96 - 07:27 AM (#92) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: fdavis@newcomm.net I have the lyrics for "Why Paddy's not at work today". I can e-mail it to you.

21 Oct 96 - 06:56 PM (#107) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: dick greenhaus Words are in the Digital Tradition. Try searching on "Sick Note" or simply on "bricks" |
22 Oct 96 - 08:12 AM (#111) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Albert.hansell@bentley.com There are also lyrics in 'Rise Up Singing'. I have a BBC recording of Gerard Hoffnung's address to the Oxford Union in which he tells the story with absolutely perfect timing. Is Digital Tradition interested in a version that is not in song? The story is also an urban myth which crops up from time to time quoted as an actual event. I don't think that anyone has been able to trace it back before Hoffnung. Bert. |
23 Oct 96 - 05:26 AM (#116) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: dick greenhaus I encountered it in The Reader's Digest in the early 1940's. There was an interesting point to it that Hoffnung and those who came later seem to have lost: It was presented as a letter to an insurance company, seeking compensation for seven distinct accidents associated with the incident. |
23 Oct 96 - 12:26 PM (#119) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Peter 1940 WOW I didn't think that it could be that old. By the way I would be interested to hear even just a short clip of the Hoffnung version if Albert could record & post it. |
23 Oct 96 - 12:36 PM (#120) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: albert.hansell@bentley.com I don't have sound on my machine but I'll send you a cassette of that part along with a copy of the cover. Bert. |

05 Nov 96 - 03:43 AM (#254) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Alex I think the song was written by Noel Murphy. I first heard it around 1974 at a BBC (Scotland) TV taping of a McCalmans show when they introduced Noel and credited him with the song. The gag/insurance letter/Hoffnung thing had been around for a long time before that. |
06 Nov 96 - 09:13 AM (#278) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Bill Foster I worked with a British traditional dance team at the Museum of Appalachia last year (I'm a banjo player), and one of them told me that "Why Paddy's not at work today" was originally performed as a music hall recitative many many years ago. I have forgotten the music-hall comedian's name, but my British friend seemed to think that it was a very old piece. |
06 Nov 96 - 11:47 AM (#280) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: fmeter@aegon.com It really is an urban myth... I work for an insurance company and have seen the letter floating around over the years... classic urban myth stuff... usually accomanied with a story that it comes from someone in the claims deprtment |
07 Nov 96 - 05:43 AM (#296) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: I have a tape of Noel Murphy in concert where he claims that the song is based on a performance by Gerard Hoffnung. This leaves the authorship a bit ambiguous (did Noel actually do the basing?). Probably. Tony Fry |

07 Nov 96 - 02:19 PM (#303) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Bill Day extree@erols.com I saw it in some magazine 5 or 6 yrs.ago as being a 'true' story (no music)about an apple picker in Nova Scotia!!Apples. baskets, limbs, .etc substituted where necessary) |
07 Nov 96 - 05:37 PM (#306) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: dick greenhaus Far be it from us to steer folks away from other sources, but the words are in the DT. Search for [sick note] or brick.

11 Nov 96 - 10:14 AM (#350) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Peter It's nice to see so much response to a query. Suffice to say I have long ago found the words to the song, now however I am curious. Dick Greenhaus says the lyrics are on DT, are we searching the same database I can't find it with a "brick" search nor a "sick note" search. Am I doing something wrong? |
11 Nov 96 - 09:41 PM (#358) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: dick greenhaus Hi- Sadly, the vagaries of spelling and peoples' memories make a search at least as much of an art as a science. This song was submitted as "Why Paddy's Not At Work Today" (The Excuse Note). A search for "bricks" would have turned it up, as would a search for "note". Or "Paddy". There are a couple of tricks to help things along. One is to use wildcards: "brick*" would have searched for "brick", "bricks" or "bricklayer". Another useful trick is to use combination requests: brick* note. That would produce 10 hits, including the one you wanted. Try to search for odd phrases or words you remember: it doesn't matter where they fall in the song. dick |

05 Dec 96 - 05:22 AM (#640) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Dick I met Cooksey recently (he lives in Clare in Ireland) and he mentioned it in passing. If you're worried about him chasing you - it's unlikely! Best Wishes |

If you're worried about him chasing you - it's unlikely! Incidentally, I have a collection of about 150 songs in a Mac Filemaker database. Probably half of them already appear in DT. Ican let you have a copy, maybe exported in MS Word or such. Interested? Best Wishes |

06 Dec 96 - 11:09 PM (#665) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: dick greenhaus Hi Martin- I'm not really concerned with being hunted down and stoned by the copyright vigilantes--I'd just like to get attributions right. And PLEASE send in anything you know that we're missing. MSWORD is fine; ASCII(or text) is universal. dick |
09 Dec 96 - 08:22 AM (#695) Subject: RE: Lyric:The Bricklayer's Lament From: Martin Ryan Dick I'm having problems with the e-mail address for DT. Can you send me a message at mryan@rtc-athlone.ie, please. I'll then try sending file as attachment. Also - is there an FTP site from which I can download a MAC version? Regards Martin Ryan |
