Please continue the discussion here instead of bringing the ill-named Pol Pot threads back up. Thanks!

Splendid idea, Kat. Too bad you had to use his initials, even.

While we're talking about murderous dictators, let's not forget Joseph Stalin, who systematically murdered over 30 million people by forced starvation. This doesn't even include the people sent to the gulags. This was BEFORE Hitler's final solution.

For those interested, the classic book on the Ukranian famine is "The Harvest of Sorrow."

The 20th was indeed a doleful century. Glad it's over. Hope we can make the 21st better.

Alex,

I share the hope. Operative words are "we" and "make" cause it doesn't just happen.

The 19th wasn't much better, come to that.

Look at Andrew Jackson who was committed to proving his belief that the only good indian is a dead indian. The numbers aren't as impressive but is wasn't becasue his spirit wasn't willing

John

Oh yes, there was plenty of genocide in the 19th century, too. It's just that the tools to really do the job effectively weren't fully in place yet, so you only got partial results.

One of the biggest die-offs was undoubtedly what happened to natives of the Americas from smallpox and other European diseases. Most of this was unintentional, but it still wiped out up to 90% of the population according to some estimates.

Did you know that the influenza epidemic of 1914 (or thereabouts) killed more people than the First World War?

And I agree, John Skeptic, we will have to all work at making the world a friendlier place for human beings. We're not off to a terribly good start yet, but we shall all have to work on bringing things around.

Kat -- PP in this case doesn't mean pianissimo, does it?

It's hard to pick a "winner" in the greatest "despot/mass murder-of-all-time awards", but Joe Stalin had to be close to the top. Andrew Jackson was also an inspired choice, I'd have to say. Columbus did pretty well in his time, though not so well as some of those who followed him. Pol Pot probably managed to kill a higher percentage of his own citizenry than anyone else on record. How about Cortez and Pizzaro? Mass murderers par excellence. The Aztecs were pretty good at it too, by the way. That's why the other Mexican tribes helped the Spanish fight them (poor suckers! They had no idea who they were assisting or what would happen after the Spanish won...).

It goes on and on. It baffles me how anyone could think that I would find the activities of such genocidal despots unobjectionable...but that's what happens when people generalize a specific statement, I suppose...or take it out of context.

Did somebody here say they found these things unobjectionable, LH, or are you just speaking generally?

Stalin definitely gets the award for number of people killed, and as you say Pol Pot gets the award for number and percentage of his own countrymen. But no genocide (indeed, no murder at all) is praiseworthy.

Hello to "the Yank" -

Okay, I understand your point. I imagine we've all done some things from time to time which have hurt society. Every time we're lazy, irresponsible, or just plain unaware of what we're doing we hurt society and ourselves in some way.

I believe that most conservative voters are unaware of what they're doing. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I am the one who's unaware. It's a distinct possibility. Maybe neither one of us has a clue. That's quite possible too.

What would you have me do? I have talked to MAV in PM's, and I find him quite reasonable, likeable, and understandable...when he's not engaged in a mudslinging match with several political opponents, all pushing each other's buttons and going berserk. I don't mind continuing to talk to him in the least.

I don't mind continuing to associate with people who have treated me decently, even though they may vote differently than I do...such as my friend John in Orillia. We can disagree about social policy without hating each other.

So what do you want me to do?

Pretty odd when people try to be sensitive to what hurts others and they wind up getting called the "gestapo" and accused of censorship.

Thanks to you who have chosen to post here. As Cait says, back to the music...anyone want to write a song about it?

The Pain of Seeing a Name

He massacred and plundered all the people of his own
Now some of those among us find pain in the reminder
A few of us decided to let the "pp" thread die young
While others give a sh*#less and would shun being kinder.

Oh well...someone else have a go?

Its even worse Miz kat when someone requests a song that is highly offensive like the one now asking about chopped up possum. I'm just a nice little guy and I try not to be mean or hurtful, even when Cletus pesters me. I am sorry that I cannot see the humor in chopped up possum and as a longtime Mudcay Icon, I would have hoped for more respect.......but such is the life of a little clay possum.

Well,LH, its not my place to tell you what to do. I mean that sincerely. I'm not trying to provoke you.

I can suggest some things you MIGHT do, if you wish. If conservative voters are unaware of the very real harm their policies produce, you could work to educate them so they become aware of it. Gently, kindly, whatever.
Then, when they DO see it, if they are still comfortable with it, or if they simply refuse to see it, at that point you might want to look for other friends.

What do you think?

You just come over here, right here beside me and I will protect you, darlin'. We'll call PETA and the ASPCA and if those who asked are in the UK, we'll call the RSPCA. We will make placards and take to the streets demanding an end to Parcelling of Possum Parts and you can be At One with your brethren: mamas, sisters, and baby possums, daddies and cousins, aunties and uncles, even old gramma and grandpa possums, 'cause all possum parts are sacred and they are all part of the Cleigh O'Possum fambullee and we will march for freedom and...oh, sorry, sweetie, didn't mean to knock you off my lap...you okay? Hello, Yank -

Oh, well, I've tried to argue all those points with various conservative friends, and persuade them of my point of view. Generally speaking, they tried to do the same back to me. I'm always willing to listen, if they're willing to listen.

I find they are usually just as sure of their ground as I am of mine. Once you're convinced of anything you can usually find a plethora of facts that seem to support it.

I guess we will all just keep on trying in our own particular way.

I look forward to the day when Mike Harris's Conservative party is voted out in Ontario, which will very likely happen in the next election.

An article in the Toronto Star today says that the gap between rich and poor in Canada is larger now than it has ever been. No surprise to me, with so many homeless on the streets, many of them mental patients from clinics that have been closed down due to government cuts. The top half of the population now has 94% of the money in Canada.

And apparently it's even worse than that in the USA, according to the same article.

That's what Mike Harris calls the "common sense revolution". I call it the "I'm all right, Jack." syndrome. Mike Harris was born rich.

Now I've got a telemarketer on my back. AAAARGGGHH!

Talk to ya later...

Little Hawk, I guess you just have to follow your heart about who you're going to have as your friends. Having met John myself, I can see how you would value him as a friend.

I feel pretty fortunate to be able to regard you as a friend as well.
