At home ( in Ireland) it passes with a discreet bunch of shamrock or harp pinned to your lapel ( and even that's dying out)and a good excuse for an extra pint or two and a bit of a sing, not that we usually need an excuse.How come it has got to such proportions ( I was going to say over the top but realised that's a judgement call) in the States? |

There was the huge emmigration here in the 19th & 20th centuries that gave the US a large, homesick, population that kept it's identity for a number of reasons (Catholicism, discrimination, etc) more than other immigrant groups. Why this wasn't the same for, say, the Poles, I don't know. Somewhere in the middle of this, vaudeville and suchlike entertainments, and a fashion for sentimental songs got stirred into the mix. The St. Patrick's Day Parade probably started out as a church procession, then became an expression of ethnic pride, and then (especially in Boston and New York), a measure of political clout. Ultimately, the holiday has been taken over by the whole winter-weary population as an excuse to break up the dreary time at the end of winter. The annual parade in my town is Huge; it's a wonder that there's anyone left to stand and watch the show. Participation is not limited to things Irish; as far as I can tell, they've let in everyone in the world to march, except perhaps nudists and bomb-throwers. It's strange and even hilarious at times, but it gives a small sense of community, especially in about ten days time, when all of the community, participants and spectators alike, have magnificent colds from spending hours out in weather they'd avoid on any other day of the year. I guess here, in New Brunswick, CAN, we Irish descendants view St. Pat's as a way to publically celebrate our heritage. To share it because we are proud of the richness of it, from it's hardship and perseverence in the new world to the beauty of its prose, poetry and music not forgotten but enriched from that which we brought the old world, and all in between. More over, we remember the immigrants, our forefathers, who were welcomed to the new land with signs like, "NO IRISH ALLOWED BEYOND THIS POINT" and, of course, "NO IRISH NEED APPLY." We remember the quarantines, the dead and walking dead, the predjudice, and the oppression they overcame in this land of promise. It wasn't easy, but they triumphed. Yes, we do make a fuss, and we're darn proud of it ! Of course, some of us just like to party too !! gnu PS Spent some time today at our community's Celtic Cross, praying for the memory of those who died making the journey to this new land and celebrating the triumphs of those who survived. A tearful and joyous event. Other festivities started at dawn and will continue into the wee hours. Many bands, religious services, meals, readings, and, of course, green beer....yuk !!! No parade in the cold weather though...we're smarter than that ! |

Today I had a newspaper reporter come up to me after I sang at the library this morning. His first question was, What does St. Patrick's Day mean to you? I thought that question was a bit odd, but I answered that being raised an Irish Catholic, it was a holy day honoring the patron saint of Ireland. It wasn't until I started reading this thread that I realized that what may have motivated him to ask the question was all the alcoholic partying that goes on now on March 17. I mentioned at the beginning of the program for the kids this morning that St. Patrick's Day is different in Ireland than in America, and some of the "inventions" of the US, like eating corned beef or wearing green clothes (instead of wearing a real shamrock). It is a shame that people here really know so little about it, yet go HOG WILD over any excuse to sell cars, furniture, beer, etc., with stupid ads showing four leaf clovers instead of shamrocks, fake Irish accents,.... don't get me started. |

To hear from you that spring is coming makes me wonder what this means to you. Here in New Brunswick, CAN, we are now getting sunlight from about 6AM to 6PM. The temperature today was about 5 and, in shelter from the wind, I wore a T-shirt, although few people would do that at 5 degrees. My daffodils near the south facing foundation of my house are up about 50mm. Apparently, they didn't see the snow on the other side of my front walkway. That snow is 1200mm deep. If I dont cover them with snow, they are going to die from frost. If you find time, tell us more about your spring. Thanks. gnu
