this strikes me as an inappropriate request....Stan does not make midis,he makes records. If you mean midis of Stan Rogers tunes, what you do is listen to the record and play-(or get someone to play)-it into a midi sequencer. Why would there even BE midis of Stans songs unless someone wants to use them for some personal reason-in which case, why would you expect someone else to do it FOR you?

I explained myself and why I made my comment-I gladly help when I can and when the request seems appropriate.This feels very much like someone saying 'please send me a tape of X's songs'. I could be wrong, but if all that diogenes wants is the melody to 'Lockkeeper', he can buy the record. If he specificly wants a midi, then, since Stan Rogers did not make midis, someone will have to make one for him, and I question the entire enterprise. Sorry that I don't seem friendly enough to suit you.If you wish to make him one, you may of course do so.If I have mis-judged diogenes, I apologize.

Well, if you are going to slag people the least you can do is put down your name and e-mail address.

BTW, midi is welcome here. They are always after midi to accompany lyrics in the database, and I imagine Stan Rogers midis would be particularly welcome.

I couldn't find any Stan Rogers midi's, and I don't have a sequencer, whatever that is, but you can find the chords for some of his songs at http://www.summerfolk.org/chords/ I assume that if you can learn from a midi you can figure the songs out from the chording.

You have to figure out what the file names are but Scarborough Settler's Lament (one of my favourite Canadian folk songs) and several others are in there.

There is also a Stan Rogers songbook available, details of which you can find at http://www.bpm.on.ca if it isn't in your local bookstore. It doesn't have songs off of From Fresh Water or For The Family, it seems. They also have a videotape of Stan in concert, which almost make me regret giving my TV away.

BTW again, I read in today's Edupage that someone has come up with software (and presumably hardware) which will let you use your PC to record your old LP's, tapes, and even eight-tracks onto a writable CD. It can even reduce record pops and some but not all tape hiss. The prospect of hitching an eight-track player up to my PC entices me greatly --- you can buy whole boxes of those things at yard sales for five bucks. (I knew I kept my old turntable and eight-track deck for a good reason.) I have loads of stuff that isn't out on CD and never will be.

I don't have a MIDI sequencer. When one finds the lyrics to a tune in the DT and finds many other titles have MIDI files attached, it is logical to assume that MIDI files are acceptable to the artists. After all, most of these MIDI's are useless for anything beyond the basic tune - which is all I wanted anyway. I have only heard the song once, after all.

A couple of points, here. The Digital Tradition is a SONGBOOK, not a collection of canned musical performances. We welcome MIDIs as a means of transmitting tunes; I cannot imagine anyone being so wrapped up in one of our single-melody-line presentations that s/he wouldn't buy an artist's recording of that song. Ariel Rogers, Stan's widow, has graciously granted us permission to include his work in our database. We hope that our listings inspire folks to buy his recordings and see what the songs REALLY sound like.

I merely suggest that asking for someone to do extra work to create a midi of a tune that YOU can find is a bit excessive--but maybe you will luck out!

thank you, Dick Greenhaus, for making my point better than I seem to have made it. I repeat, if anyone wishes to MAKE diogenes a midi, out of sheer generousity, they are free to do so, but many of the songs in the database are not widely available on recordings, whereas Stan Rogers songs ARE. If I understand it correctly, all the midis here were laboriously played by Dick G, or sent to him by someone who was doing him a favor.Midis of Stan Rogers songs would seem to be much farther down the list of priorities, since ANYONE can go get the record/tape.

Tim Jacque- As to 'slaging' someone-I thought what I said was mildly critical, but polite. And it has always been my experience that when anyone says anything even mildly critical, the message tends to get confused with the messenger, and colors future correspondance.I believe that what I had to say in this case is totally independant of who I might be, or what my email address might be.

les blank- I am truly sorry to be called an "antisocial lost soul" on the basis of so mild a comment.If you disagree with my analysis of the situation, you could easily say so without resorting to name calling. I did not call diogenes names,I only suggested that he was expecting more than was reasonable in his desire to get tune'X'. I suspect that if this entire conversation had been held face to face in a room, that I could have made my point without anyone being offended-but I knew that trying to say it with a few minutes typing would bring out the "hey, we are all friendly people here and we never criticize each other" crowd.

Once again----There is an ENORMOUS difference between suggesting that a certain request is not really appropriate, and implying that a PERSON is flawed. I made no judgements about diogenes- he is probably a fine fellow--but I still contend that he mis-understands how and why and by whom midis are created and that it is more effort for someone to make a midi of the song mentioned than it is to buy or order the original.

Dick G made my point with much less blather, and with much more finesse, but I was upset--and so it goes---

in my conversations with Ariel, she was telling me that they are working on a new song book with more songs after the first four albums covered in the first book....
(was supposed to be meeting with her last week.. but this SARS thing in Toronto has dampened their travel plans for a while..... )

I just made a MIDI of Stan's "Field Behind the Plow" for my husband to learn the song from, since the time is tricky. I got the notation from a songbook. I can ship it, but who gets them these days? Joe still, or you, Mario?
