17 Mar 01 - 06:53 PM (#420130) Subject: OLD DUNG COW From: Son of the Mill Has anyone got the lyrics to ths song.As far as I can remember it starts : < Some pals & I in a public house were playing dominoes one night> < All of a sudden through the door> Thats all I know. It`s a very funny song. |
17 Mar 01 - 07:03 PM (#420140) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Mark Cohen It's actually "The Old Dun Cow", referring to the cow's color and not its output (actually, to a pub named for the cow). The words are at home and I'm not; if nobody posts them sooner, I will. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to be in the Digital Tradition. Aloha, Mark |
17 Mar 01 - 07:11 PM (#420144) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: GUEST,ROLL&GO-C The Old Dun Cow is in the DT; try one of the wild card searches to deal with alternative speeling. I had a lot of fun sifting through the old threads. Of course, I've got the only definitive version and I wouldn't think of sharing it with anyone. ;) |
17 Mar 01 - 07:15 PM (#420149) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: GUEST,Roll&Go-C Of course, I meant "spelling." I had no problem turning up Old Dun Cow directly by title. |
17 Mar 01 - 07:20 PM (#420152) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Mark Cohen I see, I used angle brackets instead of square brackets in my DT search. What kind of self-respecting folkie do I think I am, anyway? Thanks, Charlie, I knew it had to be there. FAWLAKS, if you click on Old Dun Cow it will take you to the lyrics. Aloha, Mark |
17 Mar 01 - 07:28 PM (#420155) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Son of the Mill Thanks Mark, sorry about the spelling.I heard the song 30 years ago so my memory or my ears are faulty. |
17 Mar 01 - 08:25 PM (#420169) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: catspaw49 Its also a good idea to use the Forum and Lyrics Search........Enter the words dun cow and you get not only the DT listings but also a boatload of threads, several with additional lyrics, chords, etc. Spaw |
17 Mar 01 - 08:27 PM (#420170) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: catspaw49 Sorry, that should read DIGITRAD AND FORUM SEARCH.....its the box just above the threads and does a much better search job than the DT search. Its a lot easier having fewer "search rules." Spaw |
17 Mar 01 - 08:35 PM (#420176) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Mark Cohen Actually, I thought from the thread title that you knew of a parody...it would be a ripe one if anybody wrote it, that's for sure. By the way, the words in the DT have probably been folk processed more than a little. I found another set of words here, which appear more authentic, and include a verse that was spoken. I thought the song might be in the Levy sheet music collection (click on "Links" at the top of the Mudcat page), but they only have one song by Harry Wincott and this isn't it. Of course, as he said, Charlie has the definitive words... It's amazing what one can do if one doesn't want to do work that has to be done! Aloha, Mark |

18 Mar 01 - 10:59 AM (#420402) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: GUEST,Roll&Go-C Maybe I should log in later at night so I could commune with the other stool pigeons. My parents on the farm always had misgivings about my early art endeavers, my cow pie collages. Little did they know that some other artist would gain fame in later years from a similar exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum of Art but I digress. Mark, I have this vision of you diligently responding to Mudcat threads while your patients are impatiently awaiting your attention in their waiting room. I wish I could attach an appropriate cartoon. |

And I'm with rich r, I was expecting a wonderful new parody. Guess somebody will have to write it. Oh, no, don't look at me, I'm too busy typing up my chart notes and reading medical journals and.... Mr Manuka Jones (New Zealand's finest Liar) is named after the Manuka tree. Moreporks are NZ owls - they go "morepork" instead of "too wet to woo". And shikkers are drunkards. There I bet you wanted to know that didn't you all? |
19 Mar 01 - 01:05 PM (#420954) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: GUEST,Roll&Go-C As me mother used to tell us boys, "She was only a stableman's daughter but all the horsemen knew her." Need I explain more clearly? Anyone know any artificial inseminator songs? My old man is an articficial inseminator, Now what do you think about that? He wears an artificial inseminator raincoat And an artificial inseminator hat; He wears artificial inseminator glasses And artificial inseminator shoes, And every night when he gets home He reads the Artificial Inseminator's News. 19 Mar 01 - 07:20 PM (#421202) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Snuffy A completely different Dun Cow song. I learned the chorus off my cousin about 1960, and I think he got it from Boy Scouts or something like that. Pow-wow Anybody know any verses to this? Wassail! V |
20 Mar 01 - 04:22 AM (#421357) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Nemesis Excellent! - I was going to suggest the NA/boy scout version of Dun Cow. We used to sing it at Girl Guides' camp fire - it has great actions - yep, any one know any more verses? Hille |
20 Mar 01 - 04:33 AM (#421359) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Son of the Mill With reference to MacIntyre, I remember sometimes we would shout "Dunlops". The singer would enquire "Dunlops?" The reply was "Yes they have been MacIntyers for years!" |
20 Mar 01 - 09:49 AM (#421496) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: GUEST,Fibula Mattock The Dun Cow one we sang in Girl Guides was: We are the red men, tall and quaint With our feathers and war Paint Pow wow, pow wow We're the men of the Old Dun Cow We are the red men Feathers in our head men Down among the dead men Pow wow, pow wow We come home from fighting wars Greated by our long-nosed (long-necked?) squaws pow wow etc... 20 Mar 01 - 06:05 PM (#421953) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Mark Cohen It seems clear from what appear to be the original words to The Old Dun Cow (my link above was not very clear), that McIntyre was a character in the story. I imagine he would be rather miffed at being demoted to a bit of rhyming slang. Aloha, Mark (still waiting for Jeri's magnum opus!) |
21 Mar 01 - 07:34 PM (#422798) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: OLD DUNG COW From: Nemesis Fibula Matock! Thanks for that - was getting lost in the bath this morning trying to think which way verses went. All of us are red men Feathers in our head men Down among the dead men Pow Wow. Perhaps not much connection to Harry Champion's song, tho the 'tribal name' possibly originally some sort of echoing ref to it (as well, presumably, to 'Here's a Health to the King' ..., aka, as in DT, 'Down Among The Dead Men')? ~Michael~ |
