21 Mar 01 - 05:11 PM (#422676) Subject: The Pheasant Plucker (2) ^^ From: Joan from Wigan THE PHEASANT PLUCKER (Joan Blackburn, 1979) Me [F]father said he'd learn to me his [C7]trade when I were grown And sure enough before the bird in [F]our back yard had flown One day when I was thinking watching [F7]birds was very [Bb]pleasant Me [C7] father said, "Your time has come, go and pluck that [F]pheasant!" CHORUS: I'm [F]not a pheasant plucker, I'm a [C7]pheasant plucker's son And I'll go plucking pheasants till the [F]pheasant plucking's done It is a very pleasant trade from [F7]morn till set of [Bb]sun So [C7]come and pluck some pheasants for pheasant plucking's [F]fun! I turned me hand right willingly, the trade I soon did know I plucked 'em here, I plucked 'em there, me fame it soon did grow But still me father's hand were best, I could not him outdo Where there's one pheasant plucker, there isn't room for two One day I met a fair maid and to her I said with glee "Where are you going, my young lass?" "A-milking, sir," said she "I'll show you a more pleasant task, 'twill be a lot of fun!" "Are you a pheasant plucker?" "No, a pheasant plucker's son!" One evening I was drinking ale down at the local inn Got talking to a posh young man with tonic in his gin He said his father owned a yacht, so not to be outdone I said, "My dad's the better man - I'm a pheasant plucker's son!" Me father was the king of all the pheasant plucking clan Of all the pheasant pluckers he was far the bravest man He plucked 'em on the table and he plucked 'em on the run And none so proud as me to be a pheasant plucker's son But now me father's met his fate and in the ground lies he And I've a wife and son and I'm as happy as can be I've taught me son me father's trade, we both have lots of fun And now it is his turn to say "I'm a pheasant plucker's son!" But one night when the moon was full I heard a mournful sound [suitable sound effects required from the audience at this point] Me father's ghost returned to haunt his pheasant plucking ground Bell, book and candle would not do, peace would not to him come Until I sang the old song, "I'm a Pheasant Plucker's Son!" The chorus is sung between each verse, with a double chorus at the end - the last chorus to be sung at double speed (it helps to be sober!). In between verses also, I usually cajole the audience into trying to join in the chorus. I've lost count of the number of times I've given out the words of this song over the years. Jacqui and Bridie asked for the words, which I duly gave, although I don't know if they ever did anything with it. I've also been told by several people that Billy Connolly sings it - although whether it's my song or the "other" Pheasant Plucker I've never been able to find out. If anyone does know, I'd be very glad to know! Joan ^^ |

24 Mar 01 - 05:36 PM (#425088) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: The Pheasant Plucker (2) From: NH Dave Seems like The Wurtzels For the non-British here, The Wurtzels were a group of young men who sang traditional and not so traditional songs that were losely from SW England, such as "I've Got a Brand New Combine Harvester and I'll Give You The Key" tta "I've Got a Brand New Set of Roller Skates and I'll Give You The Key", and "Dorset is Beautiful", in the beery traditional manner. They got a lot of play on the British Radio about the time that Steeleye Span came out with "All Around my Hat", another British Top-10 song for a while. As I understand things, the Wurtzel is a tall growing plant/weed that produces pods with stubborn stickers on them, which were once fastened to wooden pieces and used to tease or comb wool and perhaps cotton, hence their name.
