Yeah! Write it! Cool!

You can always come along with us if you happen to be anywhere between here and Orillia. (I'd have to check with Mal first, though.. He's driving.)

'Spaw: You'd fit in there alright. You and the McGills! And the corn! :`)

"Everybody needs a little time away"
I heard her say
"From each other
Even lovers need a holiday
Just for a day
From each other"
Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to know
That after all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to
And after all that's been said and done
You're just the part of me I can't let go...

You bet I will! I regret that we couldn't get up there while you were there, Carol. I've very much enjoyed reading about your trip here on Mudcat. (A little jealously, but it lessened the homesickness a wee bit, too.)

Matt: Nice Lyrics!

I feel like I need to get away Oh, not forever, but only a day or two

I got to take a little time Oh, not forever, but only just say you do... understand.

And I'll let go your hand but not your heart... And I'll let go your hand but not your heart...

I love this island
But this island's killing me
Sittin' here in silence
Man , I don't get no peace
The waves upon my shore
Take me away piece by piece
Gonna leave everything I know
Gonna head out towards the sea
Jump off this island
Gonna head out towards the sea

I love this city
Man, but this city's killing me
Sitting here in all this noise
Man ,I don't get no peace
The cars below my street
Take me away piece by piece
Gonna leave everything I knew
Gonna head out towards the sea
Gonna leave this city, man
Gonna head out towards the sea

Get miles away
Get miles away
Get miles away
Get miles

I love this planet
Man, but this planet's killing me
Sittin here in all this grass
Man I don't get no peace
The sweat coming from my pores
Takes me away piece by piece
Gonna leave everything I know
Gonna head to the galaxy
Gonna leave this planet, man
Gonna head to the galaxy

Get miles away
Get miles away
Get miles away
Get miles away
Get miles away

Jande has left, they will hopefully arrive sometime tonight, probably very late, though. (Thank goodness for instant messengers!)

Hey Spaw,

We don't wipe our noses on Old Glory
All our girls are virgins when they marry
We don't tell old boring hockey stories
Like those friggin' losers down in Barrie
And we're proud to be Orillians from Orillia
A place where ice gets slippery when it melts
Yes, we're proud to be Orillians from Orillia
If you were here you'd know how good it felt

I'm sure that Muskogee is downright Cosmopilitan when compared to Orillia, I've been there. And this coming from a guy who lives in Whitby. Remember, I vacation in Wheeling.

Spaw, I've been to Muskogee too. I spent a decade living in Wagoner for six months. (Wagoner is about ten miles from Muskogee.)

Any attempt at comparison between the two is not only laughable, it's... well, it's just really, really laughable.

Hawk - "All our girls are virgins when they marry"?!!!! Have you READ the reports? Hello! Orillia has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in... well, I don't remember where, exactly, but it's pretty high anyway. Most of those girls don't get married to the father, either...

Aside from that, it's a nice little place.

Allright, I'll fess up. I've been to Orillia many times and I really enjoy it in the summer. The winter is another story. But it is a nice old town, plenty of character and as we've all found out, characters. I spent most of my teen and early adult summers at the other end of the lake, Pefferlaw. I always enjoyed the jaunts to Orillia, and up into Couchiching. Great boating area, good fishing.

I never did (and still don't) have much use for Barrie.

No, that's ozark country you're thinking of... here, the girl don't marry the father because by the time the kid is born, he's usually with someone else, getting HER pregnant.

Virgins aren't entirely unknown in Orillia. We have extra-virgin olive oil here, too, you know! (Hmmm, but that's imported...)

The reason I put that line in about "all our girls are virgins when they marry" was precisely because it is so utterly, outrageously UNTRUE!!! That's my sense of humour, okay?

Personally though, I like the line about the ice the best.

Take it from me, this is one hell of an exciting little town. I can hardly stay awake just thinking about it.

In fact, I got so excited once while explaining to someone how exciting Orillia is that I...ummmm...you know, I can't seem to remember just what I did? Or was it when I...? No, it wasn't that time either...ummmm

Where was I?

What have you guyz done to me Thread!!!?!! ;`)

Got in at around ten last night. Turned the corner onto our street and suddenly noticed the mountains of snow everywhere! But only on our street. LOL! Don't these guys pay their city taxes, 'r wot?

Took me all morning to connect to the internet. It kept telling me there was no dial tone. Mal came out and jiggled the cord real hard and then it came on for a few seconds. Now it has a rolled up piece of paper wedging the connector in place (it's the connector in the laptop, not the cord . We tried three different cords to make sure.)

So here I am in Orillia, about to go out and play Squash with my two favourite guys... ::thinks about how that could be misinterpreted...:: up at the local Y. Betcha you didn't get to see that tourist attraction, Carol! :`)

Matt! You got chords for that? I can almost hear the music... LOL! Cool!

Hes: You going to Song Circle on Mon night?

LH: Love that ditty! More, please! LOL!

LH, 'spaw, et al: I thought it was Muskokee (Muskoka?). I have some very fond Memories of the Muskoka Inn. (That reminds me... ::evil smile:: I must introduce Mal to McGill!

Anybody know if anything is happening at Don's Cafe this weekend? I need to renew my membership. :`)

"Orillia Bound"

Oh the skyline of Toronto
Is as uglified as Tonto
So tomorrow night I'll be Orillia bound
Cos the drivers here are grumpy
And the roads are always bumpy
So tomorrow night I'll be Orillia bound
Cos I'm sick of great big cities
Where the attitude is shitty
So tomorrow night I'll be Orillia bound
Where my sweetie makes the potroast
And she ties me to the bedpost
And that's why I'm glad to be Orillia bound
Orillia bound
Orillia bound
It's good to be Orillia bound
Orillia bound
Orillia bound
It's good to be Orillia bound

Har! Har! :-D

...and more "Orillians from Orillia"

Oh, we don't snort dead petunias in Orillia
We don't get our kicks from NBC
We don't take our clothes off down on mainstreet
Like them crazy unwashed hippies in BC
And we're proud to be Orillians from Orillia
A place where bread still rises when it bakes
We all congregate down by the Beer Store
To be anywhere but here gives me the shakes

Little Hawk, it's guys like you who make Orillia so exciting.

Jande, Don's is only open on Wednesdays and Thrusdays. You need to give yourself more time if you want to take in all the local attractions. Extend your trip and live life to its fullest.

Half Dead Ted played with Butch and Jack at Don's last Thursday. They were on after Unice, Larry, and Walsh and before Hottub-Murray. I told Ted that he was slowly becoming a tiny tourist attraction. He wondered how much money he could bring into the county.

Ted's wife has been complaining that he is spending too much time playing the drums and ice fishing. I told him to let her into the fish hut with him. After all, this isn't Blind River.

The Orillia folk society monthly is tomorrow. I believe Terry, Trish and another troubadour are playing. I'm in Toronto so I can't check.

We don't put crankcase oil in our hair
We run our snowmobiles right up till Easter
And we don't shoot moose except when hunting bear
Yes, we're proud to be Orillians from Orillia
A place where any fool can run for mayor
Even flattop ran for mayor once in Orillia
Which tells you that this town is more than fair
So shed a tear if you're not from Orillia
And drown your sorrows in the local hootch
In time, with any luck that stuff'll kill ya
Just like the water down in old Lake "Couch"

* (Lake Couchiching...one of the spectacular bodies of water upon which Orillia resides. The other is Lake Simcoe. You can walk across either one of them in the winter, with any luck...or try snowmobiling over stretches of open water for a real thrill! There are people dying for a chance to do that, in fact. Regularly. Mostly young men with IQ's under 72, and baseball caps on backwards, under their parkas.)

flattop did not win? Am I out of the loop now? Was there a contest? (I'm going to have to make another trip soon.)

Jande... squash at the Y? No I didn't see that.

Is there some sort of secret inner inner Orillia clique that I don't know about? How much clothing do I have to take off to get into that one?

Subject: RE: BS: In the CarolC tradition: Orillia Bound

"How much clothing" do you have to take off?

How did you know?

Actually, it's more serious than that. To become a member of the innermost Orillia clique demands sacrifices of a truly extraordinary sort. Be prepared to surrender your wit, your intelligence, your sense of restraint, indeed the very foundations of your sanity.

Be nervous. Be very nervous.

Now, to answer your question...flattop ran for mayor in Orillia way back in the 1980's sometime, I think it was the late 80's. This is not so unusual as it sounds. It sometimes seems like half the people I know in this town have run for mayor at one time or another. And the other half have fantasized about it. God knows why. To become mayor is to set yourself up for 2 or 3 years of constant abuse and harassment by people you would normally avoid if you could. The pay is not great and the hours are long.

Of course, there is the GLORY. Hmmmm.

Yeah, well, enough said about that.

Now, where were we?

Subject: RE: BS: In the CarolC tradition: Orillia Bound

You shouldn't plan to go to Orillia, Sorcha. You should only go there against you better judgement.

What troubles me is that New York gets more mention on mudcat than Orillia. I think it's a conspiracy. When was the last time anything significant happened in New York? And then having a state name the same as the city name, what gives here? Not enough brains in the city or the state to think of two names? Come on. When I search New York or NY I get over 500 hits – far more than Orillia. It has to be a conspiracy. Can't be anything else. I think we should abbreviate Orillia to OR and take credit for every OR hit on mudcat.

Thanks, flattop. Although I doubt that NY gets more Mudcat "airtime" than Orillia; seems like lately Orillia/Orillians are getting lots of air play.

Thanks for telling me not to go there........I can do w/o pregnancy and STD's. I have my very own beer store here (they do Credit)and Corgis are better than hamsters any day, IM(nsh)O. Acapulco first, then.

Right at this moment, Sorcha, mudcat has two active New York threads and two NYC threads. It hardly seems fair. They even stuck ny on the back end of Johnny, right before the Cash. The only way we can compete with that is claiming every 'or' on the page.

You might find pregnancy and STD's in Acapulco and you can easily burn bum in the bright Mexican sun if your bikini is skimpy. On the other hand, Orillia is famous for its celibate harmonica playing folk singers and wind burns. That's why you have to keep your fish hut door closed.

Skimpy bikinis? Bright sun? Threads? TORrington has NONE of the above just now, and the first 2 only about 2 mos of the year.......I guess I should start a couple of Come to Torrington threads, just to compete, huh?

After all, we have Historic Ft. Laramie, the Oregon Trail Ruts (with Register Cliffs), the Oldest House in Wyoming Territories, the Hell Gap Archaeology dig, the first iron bridge west of the Mississippi, but, we don't have any

CELIBATE HARMONICA PLAYERS!! Does Orillia have this attraction? What, exactly, makes a Celibate Harmonica Player more attractive than a Non-Celibate? Are the Celibates all Jesuits? or Carthusians? Perhaps Franscicans--after all, they love animals, too. Have they all read "The Accidental Pope"?

(just why would a celibate harmonica player be better for me than an experienced one? (Inquiring mind wants to know what a "harp" player can do that a bodhranist/cop can't.......maybe I'll switch.........)

You got Trail Ruts? We'll be right down! Nothing that exciting in Orillia if you don't count the Champlain Monument or the Scottish Festival.

Be careful with all those questions. That's how the urge to come to Orillia starts. Next thing you know, your at the ticket counter buying tickets to Mexico and you're overcome by the feeling that you want to sit in a McGill.

In the Orillian early to bed tradition I'm going now to try to dream about something other than mad cow sheep and mature men in rubber pants.

flattop, you said new york. (There... now I've said it too... )

In the spirit of flattop's little competition, I did a google search to see if I could come up with anything interesting about Shepherdstown. Google told me it had about 16,000 links about Shepherdstown. I think Shepherdstown is in pretty good shape, so I'm probably not going to put much effort into promoting Shepherdstown. I guess Shepherdstown can take pretty good care of itself.

Interestingly, Shepherdstown is very small (only three or four thousand people). I guess google had all those links because of the Israeli/Syrian peace talks that were held here back in Jan. 2000.

Ok, I've just done a google search on Orillia. It has over 30,000 links. Not too shabby.

So how was the visit? Has Jande gone home? Did you have lunch at Mezzaluna? Who won the squash game? We need to know...

It's my belief that squash is a game in which everyone loses, but I may be thinking of eggplant...

We did not lunch at Mezzaluna this time. They came over for dinner.

Yes, I believe Jande has gone home now.

Pardon the brevity. I'm kind of not here at the moment.

I'm sure the others will fill you in soon on this. Well, reasonably sure.

CarolC: "So how was the visit? Has Jande gone home? Did you have lunch at Mezzaluna? Who won the squash game? We need to know..."

the visit was... was... was.... arrrrrghhhh!!!111!!1!1!!

I went up for a break, you know... a little holiday in Orillia away from the maddness of fending off divorcing wives and tax forms and new furnace bills, and...and... I ended up working! Grrr... The mortgage up ther eneeded renewing and i had to run all over town to get the Sally Hansen stuff LH told me about that makes your finger nails into guitar picks (COOL! --It WORKS!), and run all over the rest of the town to get all the stuff I usually have to purchase in Canada cause I can't find it in the states. I couldn't get the laptop modem to work while I was there, And I was soooo exhausted on Monday night that I couldn't get to the Song Circle! Wahhh!

BUT... I won at least half of my squash games, I had a wonderful though all too brief visit with Hes and LH, Sweetie and Selkie (gave them a raisin for ya Carol! (at least I gave one to Sweetie), had a lovely dinner at the King's Buffet, and we managed to get back home on Tuesday just before the sun dropped down behind the NY hills.

Oh, and we met Len at the Mezzaluna just as we were leaving. Did you get to meet Len Johnston , the storyteller, Carol?

American female border guard quote: "what's all that stuff ya got in there?" pointing to the load of guitars, suitcases, laptops, box of computer cables and software, and bags of groceries...

James says "Just stuff we took up, and some groceries..."

"What groceries?" she asks suspiciously...

"Soymilk", says James.

(except he pronounces it *soo--weee milk* (so cuuuuute!))

She looks at us incredulously for a minute and then waves us through... LOL! Soymilk!

We decided that we would make it at least ten days for our next trip up and perhaps even two weeks or more. Too bad James has to work to support two families.

He sure did enjoy the guitar session with LH. He was so inspired he actually practised last night for an hour and a half! Cool! Looking forward to our next get-together.

Probably here, this time. Anybody want to come and help us finish the two upstairs rooms? (they are only framed in right now)? We could have a building -bee and a hoot-e-nanny! all at the same time!

Okay. Still recovering from the trip. Gotta have a nap now. More later!

~ Jande

PS: Thanks Matt!

Thanks Jande. Sorry you didn't get to relax more, but it sounds like you got a lot done.

I don't know if I met Len. I met a lot of people and I've forgotten a lot of their names. flattop, hesperis, or Little Hawk might be able to tell you.

I got the same look from a border guard when I told her I was bringing in tofu based meatless hot dogs (into Canada).

Glad you're safe at home now.

LOL! "tofu based meatless hot dogs" Next time you come visit - we do have Yves Cuisine here, and in the Big Grocery Stores, too. Just so you know...

I know, hesperis, you have wonderful grocery stores in Orillia. I particularly like Zehr's. And they play the muzak very softly so you can hardly hear it. (*sob*... I want to come back... I'm just a shadow of myself now that I've experienced Orillia and I'm not there any more)

Never did eat those meatless hot dogs, either.
