I'm looking for the lyrics to "Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby", from the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. I don't know if it's actually and old piece of music or just newly created with an old sound... Anyone have a clue?

Gotta love that a cappella!

The booklet that comes with the CD says:
Arrangement by Alan Lomax, Mrs. Sidney Carter, Gillian Welch and T Bone Burnett, Additional lyrics by Gillian Welch and T Bone Burnett.

Further info in the booklet says the song is "an elaboration of the old black folk lullabye..."

Haven't seen the movie, but I sure like the soundtrack.

Not sure if this is the same as in the movie, but here they are:

DIDN'T LEAVE NOBODY BUT THE BABY

Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Your momma's gone away and your daddy's gone to stay
Didn't leave nobody but the baby

Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Everybodys gone in the cotton and the corn
Didn't leave nobody but the baby

You're a sweet little baby
You're a sweet little baby
Honey in the rock and the sugar don't stop
Gonna bring a bottle to the baby

Don't you weep pretty baby
Don't you weep pretty baby
She's long gone with the red shoes on
Gonna meet another lovin baby

Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby
You and me and the devil makes three
Don't need no other lovin baby

Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Come and lay your bones on the alabaster stones
And be my ever lovin baby

As long as this song is on the stove, I've been wondering. Is there a musical SAW in the background on the soundtrack recording? 'swhat it sounds like. Am I nuts?

Sorcha, those words sound like a match with the movie. Thanks for posting.

There's something in the background with an eerie sound to it. It sounds to me like an electric guitar with some crazy effects pedals, but you're right, it could be a saw.

There's another nice recording of this on the Lomax collection Deep River of Song: Alabama , sung by Harriet McClintock. Sandy Paton recommended this collection to me because of the wealth of songs sung by Vera Ward Hall on it - it's great! Here's a link to Rounder's track listing for the CD.

In "Down From The Mountain" Gillian Welch describes it as halfway between a "field holler" and a lullaby. I thought it was a great field holler.

Mrs. Sidney Carter's original recording is available on the CD Southern Journey V. 3: 61 Highway Mississippi -- Delta Country Blues, Spirituals, Work Songs & Dance Music (Rounder 1703) track 24.

Is this song the same or a variation of the one by Mrs. Sidney Carter?
