Any more clues, such as a verse or where and when you heard it?

Is this it? I am constantly amazed at what I find on the web.

BIG MABLE MURPHY

Way back in 29 in a town called Coffeeville
Was a honky-tonk named Big Mable Murphy’s
She had a sweetheart his name was Melvin
And hair would fly between them every night
Cause poor little Melvin was up every morning
With two black eyes and knuckle bumps on his head

They said that Melvin'd get high on bathtub gin
Cause it made him grow to almost twice his size
He'd try to take over he'd sass Big Mable
And her great big fist would black little Melvin’s eyes

One rainy evening Scarface Moozeyola
Come in and started shoving folks around
Big Mable Murphy was out in the kitchen
They say Scarface shot little Melvin down

The very next morning down by the river
Scarface was found a being a little short of breath
They say that Scarface had died from a whuppin'
He had two black eyes and knuckle bumps on his head

Big Mable Murphy's place raved on til she died
And sometimes a tear would fill her eye
And then she'd whisper lord I’d give anything
If once more I could black little Melvin’s eyes

Once again, hats off to ya, Sorcha. I looked for that thing for two hours this morning. I remembered the "black eyes and knuckle bumps," but nothing more. Did the source say who recorded it?

Only other recording artist I could find besides Frazier was Sue Thompson.

Sue Thompson's the one I could "hear" singing it. Thanks, Sorcha, I think it was on the country charts in the early 70s, around the same time she made some records with Don Gibson.

From somwhere......"Sue Thompson's last great hit was Big Mabel...in 1975." and you know what? Now I can't find the lyrics. Can't find the site I copied them from, LOL! I know all I did was put "big mabel and little melvin" in Google, and now it won't come up. I do remember that there was no other info at the site, just the lyrics, which is why I didn't bother to paste the URL.....

Well, Mabel's address doesn't work. Wonder if it's prOdigy instead of prIdigy......if one doesn't know one's own e mail, there is not much we can do.
