ICQ still used by 'Catters?

Now that I've got my fancy new computer, I'm wondering if you-all are still using ICQ regularly, and even if it's still out there.

ICQ is still there and it is used during the Mudcat Radio to talk to Max, Bert, etc.

I think a number of 'catters still use it for other chat too.

Yes, Allison, still using ICQ. PalTalk is also used for chat as well as for the music sessions- I use both.

Personally, I like MSN more. It's quicker on this tired old PC.

Yes, 2Ls, I still use it, mostly for messaging and sometimes a quick chat, as well as during Mudcta Radio. Glad to hear you've got your new computer and will be joining in, again, I hope?!

You'll be sorry you asked, now, hesperis! Now you're on the contacts list.... you'll be in FolkChat before you know it... it's a slippery slope...

I'm leery of MSIM ever since I really read the TOS. Did you know that Microsoft, by virtue of using any of their 'Passport' services (Hotmail, MSIM, etc) is apparently laying claim to any of your communications for their own use? Not good...

I'm still out on ICQ, though after losing one computer, getting hacked on a second, then moving and getting stuck on 56k landlines, I'm a)no longer in posession of my original contact list and b) not around online as often.

Oh well...

Noreen and spaw both shared their lists with me. So many people! Wow. I still prefer yahoo messenger, though.

There are in development programs which will interface with 'most' of the other chat programs..here are some URLs for you adverturous types..(mind you, some of these are much 'simpler'..i.e. fewer features, than ICQ, and some are Beta...and some have ads...but do read about Jabber,,seems to have promise for the future

{copied from al.comp.freeware newsgroup}
Came across this article in Langa's latest Newsletter, Mukluk -------------- 3) More ICQ Replacements

AOL/ICQ must be annoying a lot of people, because replacement chat clients are popping up everywhere.

Writing from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, reader Minoo says:

Hi Fred !! Nothing like your news-letter for an education in computing for fiddlers like me. On the subject of messaging clients & ICQ, going thru a Linux mag came across "Jabber" a java client which works on all platforms & can get you going with ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Chat & some others without all the ad stuff on all of them. The Win version is at http://www.jabber.com

Thanks, Minoo. Jabber.Com looks like it will also be the home of polished, commercial versions of the server software, when they're done. Another site at http://www.jabbercentral.com/ offers even more clients, and http://www.jabber.org has open-source server software, if you want to be a jabber host rather than a user.

Several readers---Robert Rutter was the first--- also wrote in to suggest http://www.Odigo.com :

Just one more ICQ replacement. Odigo available at Odigo.com. Very easy to use. Not as feature rich as ICQ. Plugins for ICQ, etc. British users may find it of special interest since British Telecom has announced plans to tie it into telephone messaging services on their system.

Bill, I downloaded the Jabber Windows Client. It seems a little primitive in features compared to ICQ but I had no problem connecting to ICQ using thier gateway and I like the idea of one program connecting to several services.

I read an article indicating AOL have already blocked Jabber from connecting to AIM, if that is the case, I'm surprised they haven't blocked ICQ too.

I notice a couple of people commenting on ICQ intefering with other programs. I have not experienced any such problems in the couple of years I have been using ICQ.
