From: John Kalgert - frailer@prodigy.net

A local group is West Palm Beach, Florida is looking for the lyrics to "Swingin on a Star" by Hogie Carmichael.

You could e-mail me. or if you know Ray or Joel of "Fearless Lonesome" you might give it to them personally.

Thanks.

My mother and aunt sang us this song over 50 years ago. We would cry, and then ask them to sing it again! I've never heard it anywhere else.

Hello Central give me Heaven For my mother's there. She is strolling with the angels On the golden Stair.

I'm sure there are other verses but I can't recall them.

HELLO, CENTRAL! GIVE ME NO MAN'S LAND
Words, Sam M. Lewis & Joe Young; music, Jean Schwartz.
New York: Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Co., ©1918.

1. When the gray shadows creep,
And the world is asleep,
In the still of the night,
Baby climbs down a flight.
First she looks all around,
Without making a sound,
Then baby toddles up to the telephone,
And whispers in a baby tone:

CHORUS: "Hello, Central! Give me No Man's Land.
My daddy's there, my mamma told me.
She tiptoed off to bed
After my prayer's were said.
Don't ring when you get my number,
Or you'll disturb mamma's slumber.
I'm afraid to stand here at the phone,
'Cause I'm alone,
So won't you hurry? I want to know why mamma starts to weep
When I say, 'Now I lay me down to sleep.'
Hello, Central! Give me No Man's Land."

2. Through the curtains of night
Comes a beautiful light,
And the sunshine that beams
Finds a baby in dreams.
Mamma looks in to see
Where her darling can be.
She finds her baby still in her slumber deep,
A-whisp'ring while she's fast asleep: CHORUS

HELLO CENTRAL!
Since my mama's gone to heaven, sobbed a tearful little child
Since my mama's gone to heaven, Papa, Darling, you don't smile
I will speak to hear and tell her that we want her to come home
Just you listen while I call her o'er the telephone.

CHORUS
Hello Central! Give me heaven, 'cause my mama's there
You will find her with the angels on the Golden strairs
She'll be glad it's me who's speaking, call her won't you please
For I sure do want to tell her, it's so lonesome here.

When the girl received the message, coming o'er the telephone
How her heart grieved at this moment and the wires seemed to moan
I will answer just to please her, yes, my dear, I'm coming home
Kiss me momma, kiss your darling, o'er the telephone.

CHORUS

Thanks Gene, I'm so impressed with the information I get here.

Maybe you missed my other request for lyrics. I think it is a World War II song. The fragment I remember is:

... and a carpet of corn for the floor. And I heard a voice within me whisper This is worth fighting for.

Thanks again for "Hello Central".

My mother is terminally ill and is planning her own funeral. She has requested three unusual songs. The first is "Hello Central, give me heaven". The second is a spirtual called, "Goin' Home" and the third is a song with the words "shuffle off to Buffalo" somewhere in it. I don't know if it is in the title. I know this isn't much to go on and I know that these are probably not considered folk songs, but I'm having a heck of a time finding anything on the internet. If someone could just give me an idea as to where to look for these songs I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I think "Shuffle off to Buffalo " is the title. I believe I tap danced to that about 40 years ago, but any words I did know, I don't now. Sounds like it's going to be a pretty upbeat funeral. She must be a neat lady.

HELLO CENTRAL, GIVE ME HEAVEN
1901 Chas. K. Harris who alos wrote After The Ball and Break The News To Mother

Papa I'm so sad and lonely
Sobbed a tearful little child.
Since dear Mama's gone to heaven
Papa darling, you've not smiled.
I will speak to her and tell her
That we want her to come home.
Just you listen and I'll call her
Through the telephone.

             CHORUS
Hello Central, Give me heaven
For my Mama's there
You can find her with the angels
On the golden stair.
She'll be glad it's me who's speaking
Call her won't you please
For I want to surely tell her
We're so lonely here.

When the girl received this message
Coming o'er the telephone
How her heart thrilled in that moment
And the wires seemed to moan
I will answer just to please her
"Yes, dear heart, I'll soon come home.
Kiss me Mama. Kiss your darling
Through the telephone.

                  CHORUS

From: Joe Offer

Here's the Carter Family version, from Songs of the Carter Family.
I listened to the 1934 Carter Family recording and made a couple of corrections.
HELLO, CENTRAL!    GIVE ME HEAVEN

    Hello, central, give me heaven
For I know my mother's there
And you'll find her with the angels
    Over on the golden stair

She'll be glad it's me a-speakin'
Won't you call her for me please
For I surely want to tell her
That we're sad without her here

    Hello, central, give me heaven
For I know my mother's there
You will find her with the angels
    Over on the golden stair

    [INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

Papa dear is sad and lonely
Sobbed a tearful little child
Since mama's gone to heaven
Papa dear, you do not smile

I must speak to her and tell her
That we want her to come home
You just listen while I call her
Call her through the telephone

    Hello, central, give me heaven
For I know my mother's there
You will find her with the angels
    Over on the golden stair

    [INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

I will answer just to please her
Yes, dear hearts, I'll soon come home
Kiss me, mama, it's your darling
Kiss me through the telephone

Here'[s another one that seems related:

Call Him on the Phone
(Ted DeMille)

Jesus is my teacher I learned the golden rule
The bible is my primer and the chapel is my school
When I'm feeling lonely, broke down and all alone
I need to talk to Jesus so I call him on the phone

Chorus:
Hello central can you hear me?
Give me Jesus on the line
I'm out here at the crossroads
And I finally dropped a dime
Long distance information
My call is overdue
I've been a long time listener
And I finally made it through
Jesus is my shepherd on the lost highway
He is the true redeemer when I slip and go astray

When I'm feeling lonely and out here on my own
I've got my savior's number and I call him on the phone
Jesus is my captain out on the rolling sea
I'm seeking heaven's harbor where I'll live eternally
When the waves break higher and the wind it howls and moans
I need to talk to Jesus and I call him on the phone
