BS: Paltalk Subscription Option

Paltalk has always used banner advertising to pay the cost of supporting users. I received an email today explaining that because banner advertising rates have dropped significantly, they have had to add "pop-up" ads as well. While these ads are even more annoying than the flashing banners (which I seemed to have become used to because they don't really bother me anymore), they do allow Paltalk to continue to provide their service to 4 million users at no charge. The email went on to say that, as an option, you can subscribe to a "No-advertising" version for a fee. The annual subscription is $17.95, but for the next week you can subscribe for $9.95 for one year of "no-ad" service. This is just and FYI, not a recommendation or a judgement of Paltalk's direction. I got the same one, dw and I may try it for a year at that rate. I get really distracted by the flashy trash.

Me too, Kat. I must admit that I like the fact that they still have a free offering, even if it is a bit of a pain. I know, I know. It's probably a marketing gimmick to make me feel good about giving them money, but if I figure out the dollar/hour of Paltalk time, it's pretty cheap.

I'd do it if I could get onto Paltalk at all (sob, sob!).

I don't know - I have gotten quite attached to the half dressed stud who keeps offering to play with me. $9.95 is not bad.

Yeah, that 'do you want sex' one always seems to pop up when Alan is on.....

I'm getting quite used to them too....

I fear that we are near the end of the line on the free voice chat programs now Firetalk have gone (Paltalk aslo mention Hearme in thier email but I don't think Hearme ever really intended to be a player in the free voice chat programs) and Paltalk have certainly stepped up thier niggles recently, both with pop up windows and with messages being sent out to the rooms.

I will sit it out and see what happens but I expect to either end up paying for or giving up with voice chat.

For ten bucks, I thought it worth a try. Jon's right, I'm sure and the free lunch will stop sooner or later. Maybe this will stave it off for a while.

Well, I was just on and can report a banner-free experience. Quite nice, actually.

Mudcatters are spoiled. Paltalk at ten bucks a year is a good deal. I kicked in my tenspot just to help keep them going.Websites don't just happen--they cost money.

You are probably right Dick and I'm sure these voice/video servers are particularly expensive to run... Problem I have is that I can think of lost of things costing $10 to $20 that would be reasonable value but an income of £50 per week does not run to many of these even anually. I can see myself getting priced out of the internet in time.
