02 Apr 01 - 04:49 PM (#431461) Subject: Help: One-string guitarist??? From: Lepus Rex OK, about 5-6 years ago, I was driving my car, listening to a now-dead Minnesota radio station called Rev 105. Once a week (I think) they had something called the "Cake Slice," on which some people from Cake (a now-dead local newspaper) would choose a bizarre song to play. (Yeah, yeah, get to the point...) That night, they featured a song by... I don't know. I couldn't find my pen. Then I forgot about it for a few years. But now... What I remember: It sounded like an elderly black man, and he was playing a guitar with one string. He was from... somewhere in the South. (Mississippi or Louisiana, I THINK) It sounded like a field recording. (I think they said it might have been recorded in his house.) Apparently, he was/is considered a state treasure in his home state, and there is a cd of his music (they were playing it, after all), which I believe they said was released by some state cultural agency. I haven't been able to find anything about him so far... Like I said, both the paper and the station are gone now. Anyone have any ideas who this might have been? :) ---Lepus Rex |

05 Apr 01 - 10:46 PM (#434343) Subject: RE: Help: One-string guitarist??? From: Lepus Rex Hey, Giac. Started this thread when I was half-asleep, and just now remembered to check back on it. No wonder I can't remember who this guy was... ;) Well, (the late) Lonnie Pitchford sounds a LOT like the music I heard all those years ago. I checked out some samples of his CD, "All Around Man," and I think the song I heard was a version of "My Babe." (My memory is coming back a bit...) BUT, I'm sure the one I heard was a field recording. I (now) remember the musician on the radio talking after the song, responding to questions about the song, and saying the name of the song was "My Babe." And I do remember him sounding very old. (Though as we've seen, my memory sucks.) Whether it was Mr. Pitchford or someone else, thanks so much for your help, and for introducing me to Mr. Pitchford's music. (But I'm going to keep looking for that field recording, too...) :) ---Lepus Rex |

06 Apr 01 - 12:10 AM (#434386) Subject: RE: Help: One-string guitarist??? From: Stewie I have a CD called 'One String Blues' that features Eddie 'One String' Jones. Jones has half the CD and the other half is by Edward Hazelton who sings, and plays harmonica. I don't know whether it is still available. Jones' LP was originally recorded in 1960 by Frederick Usher in Los Angeles Skid Row. The CD has extra tracks, including a wonderful performance of 'The Dozens'. Takoma CDTAK 1023. Jones' instrument consisted of 3 feet of discarded 2x4, a steel wire strung from a nail each end and raised off the block by bridges - a wooden block at the open end and a pill bottle at the other end under the resonator, a gallon paint tin wired on to the 2x4 and split up the side part way to pass over the string. Jones played it with a whittled stick (beating) and a half-pint whisky bottle (sliding). A remarkable sound. --Stewie. |

Listened to the samples, and I'll have to get this one, too. I don't think either of these guys are the man I heard on the radio, but these answers were worth asking the question. Thanks again, guys. :) ---Lepus Rex |
