"On the Front Porch" was written by Richard & Robert Sherman and recorded by Burl Ives in the 1963 Disney. The song can be found in a 3 CD box set: The Music Of Disney - A Legacy In Song. Unfortunately my son has the CDs at college. I have only the box. The Sherman brothers were Disney's staff song writers in the 60's and wrote songs for Parent Trap, Sword In the Stone, In Search of the Castaways, The Monkey's Uncle, That Darn Cat, The Happiest Millionaire, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and Mary Poppins. I know, useless information and not the words to the song. |

I'm an amatuer (in every sense of the word) Ukulele player, and "On the Front Porch" is right up my alley. There's tons of transition chords, just like every other Disney tune, like E-flat, B-flat, Dm7, Cm6, C#dim7, and such, but you can get by with 3 or 4 basics. Here's how I play it: (C7) F All I want to do D7 When the day is through G7 Is linger here on the front porch With you C7 From the wicker swing Dm While the night birds sing G7 We'll watch the fireflies sparkin' C7 Do some sparkin' too F How the hours fly D7 As the moon drifts by -- G7 How sweet the air As we stare At the sky F Oh! And I miss the neighbor playin' banjo, singing songs of long ago, And the jokes we heard on headsets from our crystal radio, And the faint bouquet of lilacs when the breeze began to blow. There is another shorter recording—between 2:58 and 3:11 in length—shorter only because the tempo is a bit faster—that appears on many other albums. On that recording, Ives sings the two 6-line bridges, and there are backup singers that sing the refrain "I miss the old front porch" along with his speaking it. There are only a few minor differences in the words. Apparently "boot lashes" are a real thing, because I found the term in some old books, but it is rare, and I couldn't find a definition. "Boot laces" come to mind, but it's hard to see how boot laces would leave a significant amount of snow on a porch, compared to the boots themselves. It even occurred to me he might be saying "galoshes" rather than "boot lashes" but that sounds rather far-fetched. |
