The following posts were made on uk.music.folk and rec.music.folk. Probably where this story arose. I've just copied the posts.

Rana

First post:

"Eliza Carthy was sick and unable to perform at last night's concert for the 30th annual Nassau Community College Folk Festival in Long Island, New York.

A flier on the seats disturbingly described her as being "gravely ill", but the announcer expressed a hope that she will recover sufficiently to make her billed appearance on tonight's Conan O'Brien show on NBC.

Hope she recovers quickly, whatever it is."

This was followed by a follow-up post by the same person, a copy of which follows:-

"Well, happily it looks as if the seriousness of her illness was exaggerated on Thursday, as she did make her scheduled appearance on "Conan", where she played "Train Song" from "Angels and Cigarettes".

Sorry I missed her Thursday, but happy to see her up and about again!"

I read it on the creaols site( spelling is probably incorrect) under the folk music forum. She apparently had to cancel a concert at the Nassau Community College Folk Festival on Long Island, and a flyer was distributed saying that she was gravely ill..

Hope Eliza's feeling better now. I think she suffers from asthma, so perhaps it was related to that. As to the brother I'm sure I've read something about him on one of her cd sleevnotes thingies - is he not a folkie himself then, dorrie?

I remember bumping into Martin Carthy in Bacup during the Brittania 'Nutters thing many years ago and judging by the way he had sprogs hanging onto every limb and more besides I guess Eliza comes from a big family!

Only remembered coz the Brittania 'do' is this Saturday - funny how the old addled brain works init?

Comiserations to Eliza if it is Asthma. As a fellow sufferer I know what it is like - although I am a lot better now and I'm sure Eliza will get better in the long run. Playing in smokey folk clubs must be a nightmare for her - I can choose to leave if it's too bad but when you do it for a living...!

Wonder if folk/blues/jazz artists will ever get compensation for smoking related diseases - like mill workers for pneumonicosis or miners for silicosis etc.? Have I got the right diseases for the right jobs btw?

Anyway, hope she gets better soon.

Cheers

Hmmm - my parents know Martin and Norma from way back, and we've always followed what the family in general is doing - really not at all sure that Liza has any brothers or sisters. At all. XX

I guess, seeing as the Waterson/Carthy clan are a largish extended family the little 'uns could have been assorted cousins and Martin could have been nominated beast of burden for the day!

I'd guess the problem was a major asthma attack . . that can be pretty grave at the time (I've known two people die of them, one in his own home with medication to hand) but can also be followed by rapid recovery . .

BUT this is pure speculation . .

Also I'm fairly sure Liza has referred to at least one sibling during a performance . .

I think the gentleman in question is probably Tim Van Eyken

Hi

I don't think Tim van Eyken is a media studies teacher.

I'm sorry, but there's no earthly way that Tim Van Eyken and Eliza Carthy are brother and sister. Look at them. Also, the surnames are a dead giveaway, and the accents. There was a T Carthy in Edward the 2nd though...

I didn't mean that Tim V E was the big brother - I meant that he might be the Tim refered to

I've certainly never heard of a brother (but who knows)

From: GUEST,Nigel Morton - Eliza's personal manager

Eliza's concert at "Nassua Community College, Long Island" was cancelled due to her developing problems with her voice the previous day at a radio recording in Philly. The show was cancelled as there was concern on Eliza's part, and my part as her manager, that doing it would result in her losing her voice completely and would thus mean that her appearence on the Conan O'Brien would be put at risk. The show was a late addition to the schedule and was only made possible becuase of the Conan date. At the time of cancellation I advised Eliza's agent that we would be prepared to play a replacement show on a mutually acceptable date for both parties. This offer still stands.

Eliza does suffer from asthma, which at times has been very serious. On this occassion by making the decision to cancel Nassau I believe we ensured that a throat infection did not progress onto something more serious. It is only on reading the messages on this site am I now aware that what was a straight forward infection has become something quite different! After two months touring the USA & Canada with either her parents in Waterson:Carthy or with her own Eliza Carthy Band her resistance to infection(s) is low. Once again I can only apologize to everyone who missed her at Nassau and hope that they understand why this decision was made.

Eliza does have a brother called Tim and NO it's not Tim Van Eyken. It is the the Tim which "Angels & Cigarettes" is dedicated to!

As a PS. Judging from a review in today's UK Guardian she was fine at a concert at Dingwall's in London this week.
