I remember this. It may have mistakes and it's probably incomplete:

Show me the way to go home,
I'm tired and I want to go to bed,
I had a little drink about an hour ago,
And it went right to my head.
Wherever I may roam,
On land or sea or foam,
You'll always hear me singing this song,
Show me the way to go home.

Subject: Lyr Add: BLIND MAN
From: Marion

If that wasn't the one...

BLIND MAN

Blind man stood by the road and he cried (3X)
He cried, oh, oh, oh...

Show me the way (3x)
The way to go home

Woman stood by the well and she cried...

Jesus hung on the cross and he cried...

Jesus rose from the dead and he cried...

Last verse: I am the way (3x)
The way to go home.

Here's an earlier thread on the subject. It is likely that we had others under other names, but the search is partially broken, so I couldn't check that.

Or as I learned it:
Indicate the way to my abode,
I'm fatigued and wish for restoration.
I supped a little liquor sixty minutes ago
And it's percolated through to my cranium.
Where e'er I may perambulate,
O're land or sea or effervescent liquid,
You will always discover me, perusing on this melody,
Indicate the way to my abode.

Jeri's one is the version we used to sing round the old joanna at parties in my childhood and was popular around WWII, though probably of earlier origin, and I'm also familiar with the parody on the lines AndyG quoted, which was done at Boy Scout campfires.

From: GUEST,jonas

Hi Everyone.

I need some help. I'm looking for the lyrics (and music if you have it) for the song Show Me the Way To Go Home. You may remember it from the motion picture Jaws. When Robert Shaw, Roy Schneider and Richard Dreyfuss sing it in the cabin of the Orca.

This may not be the title of it.

Some of the lyrics that I have (from the movie) are:

I had a little drink about an hour ago I'm tired and I wanna go home

If you can provide any help I would really appreciate it. thanks again.

Please email me at jwright19@yahoo.com

Slightly different but off the top of my head so I am mising one or two words
Indicate the way to my habitual abode,
I'm fatigued and I wish to retire,
Well I imbibed a little licquor 60 seconds ago
and it's gone right to my Cerebellum
wherever I may perambulate,
Over terrafirma, aquamarine or [unknown--stratospheric pressure or something like that]
you will always hear me singing the Melody
Indicate the way to my habitual abode

This one is similar in approach to AndyG's version:

Indicate the route to my abode
I'm fatigued and desire to retire.
I imbibed a small libation sixty minutes ago
And it proceeded directly to my cerebellum.
Wheresoever I perambulate
On land or sea or atmospheric area
You'll perpetually perceive me intoning this melody,
Indicate the route to my abode.

or (another of the multitude of variations of this):

Indicate the direction of my residence,
I'm fatigued and I desire to retire.
I imbibed a small quantity approximately sixty minutes ago
And it travelled directly to my cerebellum.
Whereever I may perambulate,
O'er the land or the sea or effervescence,
You will ever perceive me incanting this melody,
Indicate the direction of my residence.

SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME

(Irving King, 1925)

When I'm happy, when I'm happy,
Singing all the while,
I don't need nobody then
To show me how to smile.
When I've been out on the spree,
Toddling down the street,
With this little melody
Everyone I greet:

Show me the way to go home,
I'm tired and I want to go to bed.
I had a little drink about an hour ago,
And it's gone right to my head.
Wherever I may roam,
On land or sea or foam.
You will always hear me singing this song:
Show me the way to go home.

For once I have to thank a spammer who brought this thread back to life,it has brought back fond memories and made me smile.

The Springburn Branch of the Cooperative Woman's Guild used to set of by bus for the guild trip(a big event for women confined to grimy tenements). A stop for dinner usually in some hotel then set of for home as the world around us settled for the night.

I was a late baby but for some reason this shy child was always allowed to tag along. On the way home the bus was filled with song. It usually started with someone singing to the opposite end of the bus. "The front/back (depending on their position) of the bus they canny sing, they canny sing, they canny sing fur peanuts."

After a few retaliatory rounds someone would start another song, lots if Scot's songs and things that were popular at the time as I cuddled up to mum and gradually fell asleep. I however always knew when to wake up,since the moment the bus crossed the city boundary as one the women started singing Show Me The Way To Go Home and kept it up till we reached the drop off point often including cleverly improvised verses.

Those trips and the ladies are long gone but remain with me always in the happiest memories.

The Clancy Brothers, post Tommy Makem, did a version on their 1972 LP "Show Me The Way".
I've adapted that version for a work in process. Here's the demo.
------------------------------------------------
I have watched the days melt and fade away
Ten thousand times or more
And I have drawn ten thousand conclusions
In the sand along the shore

No matter where I roam over land or sea or foam
You will always hear me singing that song
Show me the way to go home.

I've waited in the sun and listened to everyone
of the questions that you pose
And I have found the answers
In the petals of a rose

I've watched you come and go, and learned enough to know
There's nothing left to see
And in my time I've loved a girl
And I known that she loved me

My father used to sing this song and he had more verses:

Show me the way to go home, etc.

Ms. Fitzsimmons went in swimmin' early one Sunday morn.
She took a dip and heard a rip and knew her suit was torn.
... and the tide went out, and you could hear her shout:

Show me the way to go hone, etc.

Can't remember all of it.

There was one about a parson too, but my 80 year old memory is not bringing that up.

I remember this version from the 1960s

Show me the way to go home
I'm a bird on Blackpool beach
I lost my bikini half an hour ago
And it gone right out of reach
All I'm wearing now
Is seaweed, sand, and foam
So hand me a copy of the News of the World
And show me the way to go home

Indicate the route to my habitual abode
I'm fatigued and I wish to retire
I partook of alcohol some sixty minutes ago
And it's percolate through to my cranium
No matter where I perambulate

You will always hear me chanting this melody
Indicate the route to my habitual abode

As sung in the Royal Navy

Hi

Can someone help me with the second verse of the Skillet Lickers version of that song?

I can't understand a thing of what Riley Puckett is singing...

I decipher ...awful yell... and the end of it but that's about it...

Many thanks!

I'm afraid the same lines stumped me that stumped you, Martin. Here's the rest though. The song can be heard at YouTube:

SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME
As recorded by Gid Tanner's Skillet Lickers, 1929.

Old King Cole was a merry old soul.
A merry old soul was he.
Called for his pipe and he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three.
Living clean, scheming schemes,
[unintelligible line, ought to rhyme with "yell"]
[unintelligible line]

Let an awful yell.

Show me the way to go home.
I'm tired and I want to go to bed.
I had a little drink about a hour ago
And it went right to my head.
Wherever I may roam,
Over land or sea or foam,
You can always hear me singin' this song:
Show me the way to go home.

How dry I am (how dry I am)
How dry I am (how dry I am)
Nobody knows (nobody knows)
How dry I am (how dry I am)
I pawned my hat (I pawned my hat)
I pawned my shoes (I pawned my shoes)
For one more drink (for one more drink)
Of good ol' booze (of good ol' booze)

Show me... [REPEAT]

At my scouting we sang a version that goes:

Show me the way to go home
I'm tired and I wanna go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And I want right to my bed
No, no, no matter why I'm late
For land or sea or foam
You can always hear me singin' this song!
Show me the way to go home
(pampampam pam pam pam pampampam pam pam pam)
[Repeat faster and faster]

Melody is slightly different from the original as well, generally all of the lines end on a high note. This is/was sung as the last song, while the lyric books are collected, so that might be why it has changed.
And then this verse is just repeated faster and faster until no one can keep up, and then we had to go to bed..

I couldn't find this version anywhere so I am putting it here for posterity
