I'm looking for the lyrics and cords to this song. Not sure if this is the title or if "I will be gone when you read this last letter of mine" is the title. Thanks

This may be the song you were asking about, tho it was not a Soldier's Last letter... Simply a love affair gone sour!

Ernest Tubb, and others, recorded a song about a Soldier's Last Letter

THE LAST LETTER
Words and music by Rex Griffin

Why do you treat me as if I were only a friend?
What have I done that has made you so diff'rent and cold?
Sometimes I wonder if you'll be contented again.
Will you be happy when you are withered and old?

I cannot offer you diamonds and mansions so fine.
I cannot offer you clothes that your young body craves,
But if you'll say that you long to forever be mine,
Think of the heartaches, the tears, and the sorrows you'll save.

When you are lonely and tired of another man's gold,
When you are weary, remember this letter, my own.
Don't try to answer though I suffer anguish untold.
If you don't love me, I wish you would leave me alone.

While I am writing this letter I think of the past
And of the promises that you are breaking so free,
But to this world I will soon say my farewell, at last.
I will be gone when you read this last letter from me.

Repeat 1st verse.

THE SOLDIER'S LAST LETTER
Words and music by Ernest Tubb and Sgt. Henry Stewart, ©1944.
As recorded by Ernest Tubb

1. When the postman delivered a letter,
It filled her dear heart full of joy,
But she didn't know till she read the inside
It was the last one from her darling boy.

2. "Dear Mom" was the way that it started.
"I miss you so much," it went on.
"Mom, I didn't know that I loved you so,
But I'll prove it when this war is won.

3. "I'm writing this down in a trench, Mom.
Don't scold if it isn't so neat,
You know, as you did when I was a kid,
And I'd come home with mud on my feet.

4. "The Captain just gave us our orders,
And, Mom, we will carry them through.
I'll finish this letter the first chance I get,
But now I'll just say, I love you."

5. Then the mother's old hands began to tremble,
And she fought against tears in her eyes,
But they came unashamed, for there was no name,
And she knew that her darling had died.

6. That night as she knelt by her bedside,
She prayed, "Lord above, hear my plea,
And protect all the sons that are fighting tonight,
And dear God, keep America free."
