Is there an online resource with the lyrics to the Child Ballads? If not, would someone have lyrics to #94, Young Waters, and #204, Waly, Waly. Thanks for your consideration.

They're right here on the DT database. Do a search using Child#94 etc

Hi again I did a few searches, and found Waly Waly under The Water is Wide in DT, "filename[ WATRWIDE"

I also found an amazing site about ballads

http://www.csufresno.edu/folklore/ballads/K149.html

They cross reference a huge number of songs to The Water is Wide. Child#204 is called Jamie Douglas, and is referred to near the end of this cut-&-paste

I also tried the Flanders search site, but no-go on the 2 you want. http://myriad.middlebury.edu/db/FLNDRS/subject.html

DESCRIPTION: The singer laments the effects of unrequited love and an untrue lover. Typical symbols include the rotten-hearted oak that looks solid but breaks and the beautiful flower protected by thorns. In some versions the lover is untrue; sometimes she is dead AUTHOR: unknown EARLIEST DATE: 1803 KEYWORDS: love rejection lyric nonballad lament lover death FOUND IN: Britain(England,Scotland) Ireland US(Ap,SE) REFERENCES (12 citations): Bronson (204), 8 versions (including "Jamie Douglas") Kennedy 149, "Deep in Love" (1 text, 1 tune) Logan, pp. 336-337, "Picking Lilies" (1 text) Leach, pp. 546-551, "Jamie Douglas" (3 texts, with only the third text belonging with this piece) Friedman, p. 101, "Jamie Douglas" (2 texts, with only the second text belonging with this piece) Sharp-100E 39, "O Waly Waly" (1 text, 1 tune) Sandburg, pp. 16-17, "Waillie, Waillie!" "Jamie Douglas" [Child #204] (lyrics) cf. "Love Is Teasing" cf. "Careless Love" cf. "Died for Love" ALTERNATE TITLES: A Ship Came Sailing When Cockle Shells Turn Silver Bells NOTES: Some scholars consider this a degraded form of "Jamie Douglas" [Child #204], with which it shares a few lines. Since, however, "Waly Waly" has worn away to a purely lyric piece, it is my firm opinion that the two should be kept separate. - RBW

Hi- We don't (as yet) have Young Waters. Waly Waly is there (search for #94 or [Child #94]. I suspect that the odds on James Douglas assimilating an older lyric of Waly Waly are at least as good as those of the ballad coming first and Waly Waly being a degenerate form.

The majority of the Child ballads are in the DT and I am working on filling in the holes. (Anyone who wants to help me fill in the missing ones is welcome!) We include the Child number with the number sign "#" immediately before the number, so you can search that way, or as usual, for any word or phrase that is distinctive and not subject to varied spellings.

I realize that we lumped several beggar ballads under one Child number (#278ish), mostly because it is not always clear where one Child number stops and another starts. I will make an attempt to sort them out.

I will be offline for a week, so I will not be able to respond to this discussion until I return.

Susan,
Time will be the biggest problem but I have the inclination, the 5 volumes of Child Ballads, the abridged version of Bronson and the means to provide MIDIs of the tunes.

I can easily find the Child ballads that are in the DT (but not in numerical order) but it's not so easy to list the ones that are NOT yet in the DT. Can you help in any way with such a list.?

Cheers,
Alan
