From: Helen Hi again I did a few searches, and found Waly Waly under The Water is Wide in DT, "filename[ WATRWIDE" I also found an amazing site about ballads http://www.csufresno.edu/folklore/ballads/K149.html They cross reference a huge number of songs to The Water is Wide. I suspect that the odds on James Douglas assimilating an older lyric of Waly Waly are at least as good as those of the ballad coming first and Waly Waly being a degenerate form. |

(Anyone who wants to help me fill in the missing ones is welcome!) We include the Child number with the number sign "#" immediately before the number, so you can search that way, or as usual, for any word or phrase that is distinctive and not subject to varied spellings. I realize that we lumped several beggar ballads under one Child number (#278ish), mostly because it is not always clear where one Child number stops and another starts. I will make an attempt to sort them out. I will be offline for a week, so I will not be able to respond to this discussion until I return. |

From: Alan of Australia Susan, Time will be the biggest problem but I have the inclination, the 5 volumes of Child Ballads, the abridged version of Bronson and the means to provide MIDIs of the tunes. I can easily find the Child ballads that are in the DT (but not in numerical order) but it's not so easy to list the ones that are NOT yet in the DT. Can you help in any way with such a list.?
